Subject: Looking for a song by Thomas Moore From: Jim Krause Date: 10 Mar 99 - 03:45 PM Does any one have the lyrics and music to "Bendemeer's Stream?" I'm not sure I've spelled Bendemeer correctly. I'm pretty sure the melody was traditional, Moore seemed to frequently recycle folk melodies, the same way Robert Burns did. |

Subject: RE: Looking for a song by Thomas Moore From: Bruce O. Date: 12 Mar 99 - 06:22 PM Susan Reed sang it on Elektra 126. I'm stumped; I have a late 19th century 'Complete Works of Thomas Moore', but it doesn't have "Bendeemer's Stream" or "Nothing in Life Can Sadden Us", both of which are given and attributed to Thomas Moore in 'The Vocal Library', London, 1818. |
Subject: Lyr Add: BENDEMEER'S STREAM (Thomas Moore) From: Frank Maher Date: 12 Mar 99 - 10:50 PM Bendemeer's Stream Download Midi File Barry Taylor Information Lyrics Thomas Moore (1779-1852) wrote these lyrics for Bendemeer's Stream. Around 1900 Percy French wrote the lyrics by which the tune is better known - The Mountains of Mourne. Thomas Moore also wrote lyrics to Believe Me If All Those Endearing Young Charms My Gentle Harp The Minstrel Boy The Pretty Maid Milking a Cow She is Far From the Land. For a complete list of tunes by Thomas Moore at this site, enter "tmoore" (without the quotes) in the search engine. There's a bower of roses by Bendemeer's Stream, And the nightingale sings 'round it all the day long. In the time of my childhood 'twas sweet like a dream, To sit by the roses and hear the bird's song. That bow'r and its music I ne'er can forget, But oft when alone in the bloom of the year I think, "Is the nightingale singing there yet? Are the roses still bright by the calm Bendemeer?" No, the roses soon withered that hung o'er the wave, But the blossoms were gathered while freshly they shone, And the dew was distilled on the flowers that gave All the fragrance of summer - when summer is gone. Thus memory draws from delight ere it dies, An essence that breathes of it many a year. Thus, bright to my soul as 'twas then to my eyes, Is that bow'r on the banks of the calm Bendemeer. Subject: RE: Looking for a song by Thomas Moore From: Bruce O. Date: 13 Mar 99 - 01:13 PM This may be as good a plce as any for a question. Moore's "Nothing in Life Can Sadden Us" commences "[Women] Dear creatures, we can't do without them". By 1828 some other songs were sung to the tune of "Dear creature, we can't do without them". Does anyone have this tune, or know where I can find it? Many of Moore's early songs were not in his books of 'National Songs', or in the 10 books of 'A Selection of Irish Melodies', and we may never have a complete listing of all of his songs. That old edition of Moore's Works that I have has a section at the end of about a dozen songs that it says were not in the 'London edition', but it still does not have all of them. Moore's songs in the Irish tune index on my website are listed from early reissues of the original seperate books, except for the 9th and 10th books, which I could not find. One or two of the original issues also gave some tunes, without songs.

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Bendemeer's Stream (Thomas Moore) From: keberoxu Date: 08 Feb 20 - 12:31 PM Well, this is too late for Bruce Olson, but, regarding the river: Bendemir is an archaic name for this river, and it is in the Middle East. That is why Thomas Moore included his lyric in an Oriental novel called Lalla Rookh, as opposed to his National Airs; it is sung by the ladies in the harem (!) Today this river goes by a different name. Aras / Araxes |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Bendemeer's Stream (Thomas Moore) From: meself Date: 08 Feb 20 - 01:37 PM I used to sing it as a kid - I don't recall if I sang the second verse though: it would be one heck of a mouthful. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Bendemeer's Stream (Thomas Moore) From: GUEST,keberoxu Date: 08 Feb 20 - 01:54 PM All right, no wonder I felt confused. At the site itself, there is no such confusion. But we Westerners have been mistaken or have misled ourselves for several centuries about the name and the thing named. Band-i-Amir means "the dam [built by] the Amir." Amir is an office, not the name of a particular person. The dam was built on the river Araxes. It is the sort of dam which does two things: 1) provides a bridge by which traffic crosses the river 2) creates a reservoir out of the river |
