Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: olddude Date: 01 May 12 - 10:58 AM And even crazier is when you do go back to the early rare RR watches, you then go back to 17 Jewels LOL It is all insanity |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 01 May 12 - 03:33 PM Out of curiosity, I bought one of those 27 jewel watches made in China. Automatic, too. Cost under $100. Quality? Will it last 100 years? Dunno. Seems to run OK. Haven't checked long term accuracy, since I don't wear it constantly, and the automatic wind gives out. Large and clunky compared to an Omega, etc. Has anyone come across a study of these new cheapies? |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: Will Fly Date: 01 May 12 - 04:01 PM What make is it, Q? Some Chinese-made watches are high quality and expensive, and even 40-year old Russian-made watches like the Molnija are very solid and dependable - as well as cheap. |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 01 May 12 - 04:11 PM I bought the watch new from Stauer last year. They have several models, mostly wrist. The name is "Stauer," but similar new watches appear on Ebay under various names. They are either 23 or 27 jewel. It is not one of the older good Russian (Zenit) etc., types. (Older Chinese? Those I don't know). I have commented on them before. |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: Will Fly Date: 01 May 12 - 05:30 PM Very, very mixed reviews about Stauer watches - some people are happy with what they've got - others have complained bitterly. The hard-core watch forum guts don't rate them - but they're hard-core watch freaks. My view would be: if it gives you $100-worth of timekeeping - in your eyes - it's done OK for you! :-) |

Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: frogprince Date: 02 May 12 - 11:10 AM Here I am, now, faced with a terribly serious delimna; I'm not about to wear this watch knocking around every day. But I want to keep it running steady for a few days, to see how close it actually holds the time. Will one of these things run for a couple of days on a winding, or does it take at least once each day? |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: Will Fly Date: 02 May 12 - 11:31 AM I usually wind mine once a day - same time each day - but I've missed a day sometimes. Some stop - some continue running. Why not wind it and leave it for 48 hours - then check it. If it's running then that will give you an accuracy test and you can wind it again. If it's stopped, then reset it and check & wind it 24 hours later. |

Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 25 May 12 - 02:47 PM The Hamilton 926 was sold to Canadian railroaders, some with jewelers name on dial, all with 24-hour dial. 17-jewel. Size 18. They were marked adjusted on the bridge, but I don't know how many positions- is yours marked? A cheaper, good pocket watch is the 916, not railroad acceptable but a good timepiece. Often an be had for under $100 in good condition, and the 16 size is easy to carry. |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: GUEST,olddude Date: 26 May 12 - 10:09 AM Mine is marked Adjusted Q. This one really is perfect and a perfect time keeper. |

Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: kendall Date: 27 May 12 - 05:16 AM I can't fathom why this thread is so popular. Almost two years and close to 700 hits. Some threads don't last more than a few days. I left my Elgin 16 at home and I feel naked without it. |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: Will Fly Date: 27 May 12 - 08:08 AM Ah, Kendall - it only takes one or two dedicated If you're feeling bereft of an Elgin, I have two or three down here in Sussex you can make use of... or a Waltham or two... or a Hamilton 992B... :-) |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: kendall Date: 27 May 12 - 12:22 PM I'll bet you do! I don't dare ask how much. :-) |

Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: Will Fly Date: 27 May 12 - 01:14 PM My watch rental rates are very reasonable... |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: Will Fly Date: 29 May 12 - 07:05 AM Ladies and Gents... presenting... an Elgin 18s open face pocket watch from 1902: Face Movement I picked this up at an online auction house in Bath (Gardiner Houlgate) for £75 last week, and it arrived this morning. Like all these things, you see one photo - it's not like eBay - ask the auction house if it's working, bid and hope for the best! Anyways, it's working beautifully and keeping good time so far. It's in superb condition for a watch that's 110 years old - and what a weight! It's the first 18s watch I've acquired and it's a heavy bugger! |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: Will Fly Date: 29 May 12 - 07:07 AM Mmm... that link to the face should be: Face |

Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: kendall Date: 29 May 12 - 04:14 PM I have two of those beautiful bits of ballast. When I carry it and my .38 I can hardly keep my pants up. I didn't bring either to the UK and I feel naked! |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: GUEST,olddude Date: 29 May 12 - 04:29 PM That's a beauty Will, looks like a Philadelphia Case also My Illinois has the same case awesome |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: Will Fly Date: 29 May 12 - 04:30 PM Kendall, it's waiting to be held by you when you come down south. I'm just looking for an anchor chain to make into an Albert for it! |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: Will Fly Date: 29 May 12 - 04:33 PM Dan, the case is a Keystone "Silveroid" nickel one with screw bezel and screw back. When the bezel's off, you can see a slot where the lever for a lever-set movement could fit. |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: GUEST,olddude Date: 29 May 12 - 05:49 PM I think it was Q that said the Silveroid cases like yours and mine were actually more expensive at the time then the gold ones. Keystone made fine cases, you see them in most RR grade watches |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: kendall Date: 30 May 12 - 02:49 AM An Albert? Wuzzat? |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: Will Fly Date: 30 May 12 - 02:59 AM Sorry Kendall - thought the word was the same in the US as in the UK. Over here an 'Albert' is the standard watch chain with a T-bar and a shorter fob chain at one end, and a claw clasp for the watch at the other end. Known as an 'Albert' because of it popularity with Albert, the then Prince of Wales - later Edward VII. The 'double Albert' is the one with two equal lengths of chain running from the T-bar. As for the 'Albert' body piercing - just don't ask! |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: Will Fly Date: 11 Jun 12 - 03:22 PM I picked up another Molnija with SU3602 movement on eBay recently - cheap as chips, but with a fantastic movement. Haven't measured it yet, but it looks like around 14s or 12s... Little Molnija - face Little Molnija - movement |

Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: olddude Date: 22 Jun 12 - 10:21 PM Very Very Rare Hamilton 937. The lever set 937 was full railroad grade. Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: pdq Date: 23 Jun 12 - 09:51 AM I have a Waltham from about 1900 that has been in the family for a long time. It's open face with the winding stem on the right (3:00 o'clock). Condition is a bit rough. I want to find a serial # but the movement will not come flip up completely. Only about 1/4 inch. Is there a trick to this? |
