Of all the watches I have, none is more accurate than the size 12 Elgin that Dan gave me. I've carried it for the last three days and it is spot on. Not close, right on.

absolute beauty, that looks like one with the gold center wheel from the picture. The 992 was the most famous of the Hamilton's they were so accurate that they were made and cherished by Railroad men for 60 years. Wonderful watch

You're probably right, Dan - my friend Derek (who sold me the watch and who tried to repair it) said he had trouble with the balance - wouldn't stay tight. As I said before, he's really a Swiss wristwatch man and freely admits that he doesn't know a lot about American pocket watches. I bought his last three!

Anyway, anything you can do - always greatly appreciated.

This is one of my favorite carry watches. A Hamilton 940 21 Jewel. Everything is wrong as far as case, and dial but it has more RR history then any 10 940's out there. It left Hamilton in 1902. When the dial went to hell the railroad guy put a steel dial on it. When the case went to hell he put a cheap case on it. Both were done in the late 20's. The original owner worked on the B+O Railroad (same as my dad did). It was RR used and carried for probably 60+ years. So I still carry it and it is dead nuts accurate because of Mahlon's serice.

No Dan - the only size 18 I have now is the Ball-Waltham RR Grade from 1920. All my others are size 16.

Will - Kendall's Elgin watch was fixed by Derek Burgess, who lives in Bournemouth Kinson) and has a shop in Poole Road, Branksome.

Jacqui gave me the watch on one of her visits to the Herga folk club and we gave it back to Kendall when he and Jacqui both came to the Herga with MGAS and Richard on 9th May last year - the evening before Kendall's famous birthday surprise when Mike O'Connor sang "Carrying Nelson Home" to him on board HMS Victory in Portsmouth.

Kendall may not remember it (though he will remember the Victory!), but Derek and I sang together at Herga on the 9th and they have met!

The Hamilton name lives on in a pretty good watch.
In 1966, Hamilton aquired Buren of Switzerland, and moved there in 1969. The Buren-Hamilton microroter was a small movement automatic.
It was bought by Omega-Tissot in 1971.
Omega-Tissot merged with ASUAG to form the Swatch group.
Their better movements are made in their ETA factory in Switzerland. ETA is the largest maker of Swiss movements. Eta 2824-2 movement is a 25j automatic, the 7750 var. has stopwatch capabilities.
The ETA 2892 is 21j (to 25j) with three grades, the top adjustable to 5 positions and temperature and, with specs of -4/+4 seconds/day, meets COSC specs of -4/+6 seconds/day, matching the best of the old pocket watches.

Omega Seamaster, current model, is a 2892 (omega 1120); with addition of a coaxial escapement it becomes the Omega 2500 series.

The top movements, in Omega, IWC and Breitling, match Rolex in quality, although purists will argue about this.

Don't ask me to explain any of the above, which I found out by looking at several websites, and was caused by an adv. for Hamilton Jazz Maestro automatic chronometer, ETA 7750, in the NY Times for $1845.

I discovered some years ago that Swatch also own Longines - which, for some weird reason, seemed to debase my two Longines watches. As I've now given up on battery watches, they're both going for sale at the moment.

Longines still havetheir own plant, and their self-winding automatics are very good.
Their L561, 25 jewel, is a fine watch.

Down-grading a fine watch because the holding corporation also makes inexpensive watches is nonsense.

I own one battery watch, a columbia sportsman's watch. Only because I don't want to carry a 992B in the middle of a fly fishing stream. That is the only time it is used

Hey Dan - that 925 you sent is accurate as accurate can be! I set the time yesterday to exactly 11am after winding, using an atomic clock website - and this morning a check reveals it's absolutely accurate.

Wonderful. I hadn't realised that the 925 was Railroad approved either.

Well, I just grabbed a US Navy Hamilton 4992B GCT pocket watch at an online auction this morning. The rear casing's a little hammered but the dial's good, and I'm hoping the movement's OK. (It was paired with a 1917 military compass).

I have 10 perfect Hamilton 992'b. These are the best RR watches ever made. All have had full COA's done to them and every one keeps better than RR time. If anyone wants one 250 bucks which is a steal for a superb 992b with a full Coa done on it ... I have steel cased and a couple with the bar over the crown. All original every one.

992b Will is regulated to 6 positions as the 992 is 5 positions. The 992b uses a Ball regulator that was modified and re-engineered for accuracy. The 992 is a beautiful watch that keeps time that makes little difference. The 992b was just the most modern and accurate ever made because of the later engineering.

The 992B represented the best in technology of the time hence favored by collectors for its reliability and its accuracy. Also it is not rare, they made a bunch of them and parts are easily obtained to keep them running unlike many of the earlier Hamilton watches where parts are scarce.
