Subject: RE: 1950s novelty songs From: Stilly River Sage Date: 07 May 26 - 01:18 PM Purple People Eater was the late 1950s. 1958's Beep Beep - Little Nash Rambler was certainly a popular novelty. And at the very end of the decade (1960) you could consider Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini by Brian Hyland. There are a lot of songs excluded if you stick to the 50s. The 60s were prime for those kinds of songs (Monster Mash by Bobby Pickett in 1962, In the Year 2525 by Zager and Evans in 1969, to say nothing of all of the novelty songs by Ray Stevens, as illustrated with his Guitarzan album in 1960. |

Subject: RE: 1950s novelty songs From: Stilly River Sage Date: 07 May 26 - 11:00 PM Well there it is! 1950s novelty songs* started October 19, 2008. And in the first post are some of them named here. There appear to be quite a few of them. "Novelty" tends to imply new or scarce. I wonder if there is another term for these compositions? *Tracked down using the Lyrics and Knowledge Search, and with no results, moving next to clicking on Max's Handmade Magic Multi-Site Search. The one result was JennieG's thread. |

Subject: RE: 1950s novelty songs From: Acorn4 Date: 08 May 26 - 04:00 AM In many ways it's sad that this kind of song would stand no chance of getting in the charts these days. |

Subject: RE: 1950s novelty songs From: clueless don Date: 08 May 26 - 06:45 AM There was a particular genre of novelty song (possibly mentioned in that other thread) produced by someone named Dickie Goodman. They each consisted of a narrated story with little clips of recorded songs inserted. I actually owned (may still do) a 45 of one of these, titled "Berlin Top Ten", and another one titled "Batman and his Grandmother", though that one was definitely from the 60s. Don |
