Subject: Record Low in Web speed From: LaMarca Date: 10 Oct 97 - 09:33 AM A challenge to Mudcat users: Yesterday I tried to get into the discussion group several times over the day when I had spare time at work. At around 5PM EST, I hit a new record low in loading speed. I use Netscape 3.0, which has a little "Loading nK at __ per minute" log at the bottom. While sitting (im)patiently waiting for the list to load part of the graphic header for this page, it hit: "Loading 4K at 96 bytes per second" Yes, that's "bytes", not Kilobytes, certainly not Megabytes. At that point I gave up and quit Netscape, figuring it would take about 5 hours to access and read one thread.
This is the slowest loading speed I've ever seen in all my Web-surfing. Anyone out there This morning (Friday, 9:30 AM EST), everything loaded quite quickly; I'll cross my fingers and try to read a few threads before getting back to doing some real work... |
Subject: RE: Record Low in Web speed From: Sheye Date: 10 Oct 97 - 10:06 AM I was away for a week and have come back to hangups, hiccups, coughs, and sputters. It's taking around 3 minutes to get the forum page up, and I can't get into any threads that are longer than about 15 entries, before the system crashes completely. Help!! The rest of the web is business as usual... |
Subject: RE: Record Low in Web speed From: Frank Phillips Date: 10 Oct 97 - 11:38 AM FWIW The rest of the Web has NOT been business as usual for me. During the last 4 days I have been experiencing abominable response from many (but not all) sites. I never did have enough patience to connect with the U.S. Naval Institute which I think is in Annapolis Md. On Wednesday I even gave up on getting to a site in the Pend Oreille Valley network which , as the crow flies, is pretty close to us in Calgary. This forum has been slow but I have bailed out from it less than from any others. I thought perhaps my service provider at this end was at fault but in that case one would expect a pretty even distribution of slowness. I believe the Smithsonian Air and Space magazine has a satellite status report at the end of each monthly issue. It might be interesting to check and see if anything related to telecommunications went out of service this week when the applicable issue comes out. Meanwhile I await the true explanation with interest. Frank |
Subject: RE: Record Low in Web speed From: Dale Rose Date: 10 Oct 97 - 11:54 AM Oh, I've got you beat, and then some, LaMarca! When I saw your comment earlier, I knew I had seen speeds below 100, but could not exactly say how low. But I was just now at the County Sales site, and got speeds of 5, 12, 25, and topping out at 41 when a 23K file finally loaded. Sorry, but I did not clock the load time. There is not a heckofalotta room to beat ! I agree with Frank. The problem is a lot wider spread than what we see here. Everything you say about the problems here are true for me, too, but I am getting the same thing and worse other places. Maybe the doomsayers are right. |
Subject: RE: Record Low in Web speed From: Bill D Date: 10 Oct 97 - 12:08 PM 3 or 4 million copies of MSIE 4.(Microsofts new browser) have been down loaded since Oct.1...and lots of people (including Max)are saying that the very way it operates, (including a lot of 'push' technology sending you stuff you may not have asked for), is slowing everything down! I found this review on another site...so beware... MSIE 4.0 - The Web Browser from Hell If you're curretnly using Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0.2 and are considering "upgrading" to Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 ------ don't !!! I made the mistake of doing that and discovered that MSIE 4.0 is truly the web browser from hell. It has so many irritating and useless bells and whistles and fruit salad on it that it is virtually unusable for what I consider to be the main function of web browser, namely, taking you from one web page to another. Let me count the ways in which it is inferior to all prior versions of MSIE: It installs its own "desktop" filled with advertising and screws up your real desktop and makes it unreadable. It screws up your "favorite" bookmark listing, replacing the former easily accessible long list with a tiny window through which you must constantly scroll down your list. And the scrolling function is s-l-o-o-w-w-w-e-r than molasses in January. Just going to a simple bookmark now takes eons of time. It prevents you from sizing your screen page in the "intermediate" size; the only two choices are "minimized" and "full screen." And in "full screen" mode it covers up your taskbar, so in order to switch to another program you first have to minimize the MSIE screen in order to read your taskbar. The "font size" funciton is gone, which lets you make screen print larger. Or if it's still there, it's hidden somewhere in one of the many subsidiary pages you have to go to in order to perform the simplest of operating functions. Many of its functions are now set in the fucking frames format, meaning that when you call up certain stuff you can't bookmark it or print out a hard copy of it. The old simple multi-function toolbar is gone, and instead you have to go to a new page to do perform most functions, and each of those pages are loaded with banners and graphics that take forever to open. It's loaded with mandatory links to all kinds of crappy sites (weather, stock quotations, etc., and yes, even links to AOL) which apparently have entered into marketing arrangements with Microsoft. All in all, it's confusing as hell, complicated as hell, and worst of all it is much S-L-O-W-E-R than all previous versions of MSIE. After four hours in MSIE 4.0 hell, I wound up paying $15 to Microsoft to phone them (technical support is $15 per "incident") to learn how to UNLOAD it so I could get back to my trusty, reliable MSIE 3.0.2. If you're considering downloading MSIE 4.0, I can only say one thing. DON'T! If, on the other hand, you feel in the mood to give yourself ulcers, high blood pressure, and gray hairs, then MSIE 4.0 is just the thing for you.

Subject: RE: Record Low in Web speed From: Suibhan Date: 10 Oct 97 - 01:04 PM I am glad it's not just me. I have experienced very slow of nonexistent loading this past week. If MSIE 4.0 is slowing everyone down, what can we do about it? I'm not the activist type, but this might turn me into one. Suibhan |
Subject: RE: Record Low in Web speed From: LaMarca Date: 10 Oct 97 - 01:33 PM NIH's computer gurus listed a Web page that gives news reports about Internet performance and maps out traffic problems; sort of like the morning/afternoon rush hour reports in major metro areas:
Here's their reports from the past couple of days; even the Weathermen are having trouble with their server! Morning update: server problems.... (9:15 AM PDT) At present, InterWeather.com is experiencing server problems and our statistics system is not currently working properly. We expect to be back up to full strength by this evening and should resume normal operations at that time. Wednesday, October 8th Morning update: Widespread troubles The morning's statistics indicate network problems spread across much of the 'Net. Packet losses to many of the major backbone providers that we ping have increased steadily throughout the morning; however, statistics for each network seem to fluctuat independently, suggesting an overall instability under heavy traffic loads -- not uncommon for a Wednesday morning, as it is often the highest-traffic day of the week for many providers. Traffic reports from several backbone providers also suggest that today has seen high traffic loads so far, and is shaping up to be a rough ride. |
Subject: RE: Record Low in Web speed From: Alice Date: 10 Oct 97 - 02:09 PM Bill D... I think you hit the nail on the head. Each day as I absorb the news regarding the net and technology, I can almost feel the purchases and online set up of new internet users. As the community grows, the crowd surges. Is this the new Woodstock? No one knew how many people would "show up", and now, as Bill outlined, there are the technological problems added by the type of browsers being used, etc. It has made me step back and examine how dependent I have become in my business on using email and the internet. It used to be just fax, phone, UPS and FedEx that I had to be concerned about for reliability. Alice in Montana |
Subject: RE: Record Low in Web speed From: Date: 11 Oct 97 - 03:12 PM Maybe it's Microsoft. Bloated code. Why use 10 bytes when 100 will fill more space. MSN is slow as hell. The new MS Flight simulator is slow as hell loading. MSIE 4.0 is slow as hell. Get the picture? Bob S. |
Subject: RE: Record Low in Web speed From: Elwooddelta Date: 11 Oct 97 - 04:29 PM I donno, I kinda like the slow speed, I can play my Dobro between pages. Lets see I think I've got time for 61 Highway between here and the Gibson Guitars Home Page. Lord that 61 highway is the only road I know.................. |

Subject: RE: Record Low in Web speed From: Robert Lee Date: 12 Oct 97 - 03:16 PM It's not just MSIE. I use Netscape. There's something seriously wrong with the server and/or software behind this site. Besides being slow, three times out of four the thread listings I get are garbled and I have to go back and try again. |

Subject: RE: Record Low in Web speed From: Dale Rose Date: 12 Oct 97 - 06:34 PM New "records": 80 here, FOUR at another site. |
Subject: RE: Record Low in Web speed From: Earl Date: 12 Oct 97 - 08:45 PM I'm hoping that it's not the Microsoft browser per se, but the "free" downloading that was going on last week and is probablbly still going on. They didn't make it clear how much larger it is than any previous download of MSIE or Netscape. The compressed files are over 10 meg. |
