There is a UK TV ad out at the moment for some anti-wrinkle stuff. What caught my eye was that it says it contains 'Boswelox'.

To my untrained eye that looks very much like an anagram of Swel Bolox... Did the ad men know???

Any other good examples of them getting it wrong (Or perhaps right!)

Makes me wonder why me and Spot the Dog didn't submit our campaign for Holts Bitter.

"Holts bitter gets you pissed!" Could have made us a fortune:-)

or what about Best Universal Grit Grime and Effluent Remover (B.U.G.G.E.R. for short)

If Daz doesn't whiten it
And Omo doesn't brighten it
Bugger it...

Perhaps it would be snapier if we called it Finest Universal Cleanser Known?

"Lox" is shorthand space speak for "liquid oxygen." I envisioned some sort of petroleum derivative put on the surface to be cleaned, and then an application of liquid oxygen. Since they used to use liquid oxygen and purified kerosene as the fuels for the Titian rockets, I sorta suspect that the cleanliness of the item would be forgotten in the resulting explosion.

But then I did a websearch for boswelox, and found this at the L'Oreal site:

"Boswelox™ is a breakthrough phyto-complex created by L'Oréal Paris that combines a power dose of boswellia serrata extract and manganese, which help reduce the appearance of lines caused by facial micro-contractions."

Aha! thought I, I'm helping out poor old Gnome. Then I found this.

But to save y'all from looking it up yourselves, you'll find here the the plant boswellia serrata has another name, one older that the Bible. It's more common name is frankincense.

I suspect that you give them gold and they stick it to you. Burnt frankincense was used by the old-time Egyptians to darken around their eyes; it was called "kohl".

After checking this stuff out I now know more about frankincense than I every wanted to know. For one thing, it's tree sap from Somalia.

I suspected that the marketing hook on this one was the fact that it sounds a bit like Botox. Thus attracting people who either can't afford the drug, or hate needles.

I've got a hard time understanding why in the world I'd let someone inject a poison into me. Botulism is bad enough in food, an extremely toxic poison, but I guess if you rename it something cute it's okay.

On that basis, let's rename other things.

Dum-dum bullets can be called "Deedees."
Arsenic Oxide becomes "Arnox" (can't very well call it "Arsenox").
Hydrogen Fluoride can be called "Hydrofluor."
Escherichia coli is renamed "Escol."
Giardia lamblia (intestinalis) will hereafter be known as "Gialamb."
and lastly, I suggest that the C4H10FO2P be known as "Sarin."

If you think that I'm opposed to cutesy-wutesy names for stuff that can kill you, you're right.

I agree with (formerly)Giok that suddenly themarketing people come up with something called Boswelox because other idiots pay ridiculous money for something called Botox. Obviously they think that you will pay good cash for anything which starts with "BO" and finishes with "OX". I wonder what they would pay for a skin cream made from Mudcat Threads - they are full of BOLLOX.

Ya'll obviously don't realize how prevalent this renaming is. Every time something is shown to be harmful or carcinogenic it will in all likelihood be renamed. The EXXON VALDEEZ was reflagged as the Sea River Charleston after the incident. I've responded to many incidnets of a seemingly harmless substance only to find it's truly hazardous being shipped under a "trade name".

I was amused by a friend who would not allow her child to consume anything containing aspertame but stocked the cupboards with Nutrasweet products because they were sugar free and therefore good for you. Doesn't Nutra mean nutricious?

She did the same with granola bars containing sugar and instead fed her offspring bars with 50% corn syrup and invert syrup. Then insisted that the change reduced his hyperactivity.

I have heard (though I haven't tried it - honest) that pile ointment gets rid of wrinkles as efficiently as botox without the needes.

Yeah, the old temporary treatment for wrinkles was Preparation - H, cover the smell with a little perfume Et Voila!
