Subject: BS: Holland or The Netherlands From: Jim McLean Date: 26 Jun 04 - 11:43 AM Which is correct? Officially, The Netherlands is always used but most people say Holland. I know there are two regions called North and South Holland. |
Subject: RE: BS: Holland or The Netherlands From: Ebbie Date: 26 Jun 04 - 12:00 PM And 'Dutch' too. For a lovely people, they certainly are confused.:~) |
Subject: RE: BS: Holland or The Netherlands From: Jim McLean Date: 26 Jun 04 - 12:12 PM The Dutch are the people who live in H or The N and is obviously related to the word Deutsch. I don't know whether they are confused or not but I am. |
Subject: RE: BS: Holland or The Netherlands From: George Papavgeris Date: 26 Jun 04 - 01:41 PM I lived in the Netherlands for 7 years. North and South Holland are just two of the provinces of the country called the Netherlands. They call themselves Netherlanders - not Dutch. This latter term was coined by the English-speaking world back in the 19th century and simply arose out of confusion. The "Netherlanders" never had anything to do with the term. And just a little aside: The country of Netherland should NOT be confused with the "Low Lands", which is a 17th century term referring to the combined area of (most of) Netherlands and Flanders, which were below sea level. |
Subject: RE: BS: Holland or The Netherlands From: Ed. Date: 26 Jun 04 - 01:42 PM This page might help. The reason why the football team is still called Holland, may be similar to the historical reasons that dictate that the British cricket team is called England. |
Subject: RE: BS: Holland or The Netherlands From: Mark Clark Date: 26 Jun 04 - 01:46 PM A quick glance at the list of UN member nations finds Netherlands in the list but no Holland. - Mark |

Subject: RE: BS: Holland or The Netherlands From: Amos Date: 26 Jun 04 - 01:59 PM Holland is no longer a country in its own right but a privince or state of the Netherlands. This has been the case since the 19th Century, I believe. There is a north and a south Holland. A Full country name: Kingdom of the Netherlands Area: 41,526 sq km Population: 16.2 million Capital City: Amsterdam (population 735,000) People: About 83% of the population are Dutch (Germanic and Gallo-Celtic stock); most of the rest are Indonesian, Surinamese, Moroccan, Turkish or Antillian. Language: Dutch, Frisian, English Religion: 52% Christian (Roman Catholic and Protestant), 5.3% Muslim. The number of former churches that these days house art galleries is the most obvious sign of today's attitude to religion and art. Fully 40% of the Dutch say they have no religious affiliation. Subject: RE: BS: Holland or The Netherlands From: Jim McLean Date: 26 Jun 04 - 05:46 PM Ed, there isn't a British cricket team, there is an English and Welsh cricket team which is not the same. I had assumed the possibility that 'England = Britain' was the same as 'Holland = The Netherlands' and that was the main reason for raising the question. By the way, lowlands is another expression for netherlands. |
Subject: RE: BS: Holland or The Netherlands From: Rasener Date: 26 Jun 04 - 05:47 PM It is for the Nederlanders now. Slightly the better side tonight. |
Subject: RE: BS: Holland or The Netherlands From: Ed. Date: 26 Jun 04 - 06:00 PM Jim, there is a British cricket team. I'm dog tired and going to bed now. PM me if you want to discuss more. The words "Mike Denness" might clarify my point. |
