Subject: New Years Eve at SINSULL's From: SINSULL Date: 19 Dec 09 - 10:46 PM Brett and Wakana will be in town so it's dinner (probably a buffet), music, breakfast, share some joy, commiserate over some ot the crap and move into 2010 together. I will do Honey Ham and potatoes. Deborah and Tom offered to take care of veggies. Jacqui is making pies and hopefully will remember a plum pudding. We will be about 20 so I don't know if we can manage a sit down. We need a salad, bread, cheese, desserts, and of course wine and champagne. So far if weather and health allow, we have me, Brett and Wakana, Jacqui and Kendall, Deborah and Tom, Linn and Tom, Charmion and Edmund, Charlie and Judy, Jeri, Becca, Deb and Jim along with Meghan and a friend - Kendall's family, Tami and Jason, Kathy. A few others have been invited. Who else is in? Who else needs a bed? |

Please do not spend money on gifts. This year especially there are too many who have nothing. Donate! Donate! Donate! Subject: RE: New Years Eve at SINSULL's From: Bat Goddess Date: 29 Dec 09 - 08:58 PM The only thing that could keep us home is if the temperature is too frigid. Snow I think we could deal with. Almost didn't make it home tonight -- the door locks in my car were frozen. All of 'em. The passenger side lock didn't want to release my key, either, until I fought with it a bit. Was rescued by a Sears associate from Fitness who had one of those little flame throwers. It worked -- and he didn't melt the lock, either. Whew! Linn |

But that means I don't have any time tomorrow to do anything like pack (well, for an overnight) or, uh, wrap Mary's "gifts"...I think I've procrastinated about as long as I can. I guess I have to wrap them tonight. I'll use the "Don't open til Christmas" paper...;-) We're playing the weather...annoying snow or frigid temps...entirely by ear. I'll be playing a gig tomorrow night, and thinking safe travel thoughts for those who are intrepid. Have fun!! |

Subject: RE: New Years Eve at SINSULL's From: Charley Noble Date: 31 Dec 09 - 03:20 PM There was a rumor a while back that Brett and Wakana were approaching Chez Sinsull. I wonder if she were there or if the door was unlocked. It would be sad if we found them frozen to the door stoop. Ugh! It's been snowing all afternoon up here in Midcoast Maine. The pie looks good. I wonder how it tastes. Geez, the crust looks a little fragile. Oh, damn, a piece just broke off in my hand... Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: New Years Eve at SINSULL's From: Bat Goddess Date: 31 Dec 09 - 04:11 PM Could have sworn I posted to this before I went to work. Woke up this morning feeling like doggy doo. Went to bed last night feeling like doggie doo. GI distress, headache, general aches, etc. -- same symptoms as my coworkers just got over. Had to go to work (noon-3) or I wouldn't get paid for tomorrow, but decided to avoid sharing this malady with the gathering, we'll stay home. Really wanted to make it, but I'll probably be asleep by 10. And with the weather the way it is (though it wasn't bad driving on the way home heading west), I doubt we'll be howling at the blue moon tonight either. By the way, I got a package from my sister today including an INCREDIBLE Christmas gift -- an original videotape of the Smenge's "The Last Polka"!!!! NOT available on DVD. Wonderful! If I didn't feel so glucky, I'd watch it tonight. Linn |
Subject: RE: New Years Eve at SINSULL's From: SINSULL Date: 31 Dec 09 - 04:13 PM Happy New Year, Peter and joanne. Brett is taking a nap. Wakana is helping me set the table and get the last of the dishes prepared. Ham is in the oven. Wine is chilling. I am off to take a shower. SINS |

LOL Ham Salad and Ham Croquettes and devilled ham and ham on rye and ham bones and lentils and... No problem, Linn. The weather report is so iffy and I don't want your malady. Happy New Year to you and Tom. Mary |
Subject: RE: New Years Eve at SINSULL's From: DebC Date: 31 Dec 09 - 05:44 PM I wish I could be there with y'all as well, but as Linn said above, the weather is iffy. We have more snow on the way here. And Linn-enjoy The Last Polka. One of my favorite movies. Deb |
Subject: RE: New Years Eve at SINSULL's From: Jeri Date: 31 Dec 09 - 06:05 PM My allergies have been such that y'all would think I was carrying the plague anyway. So, it seems to have stopped snowing here, at least for now, but it looks like farther north sucks a bit. Have fun, even if I'm not there, and Happy New Year. |
Subject: RE: New Years Eve at SINSULL's From: SINSULL Date: 31 Dec 09 - 06:47 PM Food for an army but Jacqui and I cracked open the champagne. All bets are off for dinner. Happy New Year all. Brett and Wakana look great. They are eager to get home and sleep in their own beds. I just went outside to cool off. The kitchen is brutally hot. They are comfortable Go figure. |
Subject: RE: New Years Eve at SINSULL's From: SINSULL Date: 01 Jan 10 - 12:14 AM Tami and Jason, Wakana and I are the only ones to make it to midnight - with expensive glasses and whorehouse tribbles. Happy New Year all. |

Subject: RE: New Years Eve at SINSULL's From: Charley Noble Date: 01 Jan 10 - 11:39 AM Sinsull- Everything was delicious! And there certainly was plenty of it. Kendall was in good humor, and it was great to see Brett and Wakana after so many years. Brett had a nasty cold but it's hard to feel sympathy for someone who has been residing on a tropical island for years. Everyone was excited about the Grammy nomination, and there are plans to fly out to LA for the presentation evening later in January. Maybe we all should go and start chanting. I do hope that if our favorite producers are called up on stage for the award that there is no major wardrobe malfunction. The driving wasn't bad running home before midnight but coming down in the late afternoon traffic was tied up in knots as a car BBQ'd in the breakdown lane (no one was injured). I'm glad that we planned for extra time. Nice to be home! Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: New Years Eve at SINSULL's From: gnu Date: 01 Jan 10 - 12:16 PM I hit the bunk at 9:30 last eve and turned the phone ringer and answering machine volume off just in case. Got up about 2:30 and dressed. Went outside at 2:40 to look at the moon and the moonlight glistening on the snow. It was so calm, so serene, so peaceful. Came back in at 2:41 and got back under the blankets with my clothes still on and swore never to do that again. I am still cold. Idiot! |
Subject: RE: New Years Eve at SINSULL's From: SINSULL Date: 01 Jan 10 - 12:18 PM Brett and Wakana are off to the airport. Everyone else has gone home. Seamus is nestled in on the sofa for a long winter's nap. I am going to join him. There was enough food for an army and lots of leftovers including champagne, I have to find younger friends. Tom's dips were amazing. And I actually loved the raisen sour cream pie. Definitely needs a name change - Dried Grape and Cream Delight, maybe? Pies and chocolates and cheeses and a new Nunzilla for whom no one is taking responsibility. Got a call from (I thought) Big Mick and rambled on for a while until I was told "This is Pat Paterson." So sorry, Spaw but I think someone spiked my lemonade. Happy New Year all. Micca - they were all on their way to bed by the time Dick Clark announced dropping balls which led to a folk tale from Wakana about raccon whose...ask Brett about it. The Raspberry Liquor is beautiful. Served it in dark chocolate cups. Jacqui and i are planning an afternoon of bad movies and good drinks. We toasted you, Micca. But no phone call. Sorry. Mary |
Subject: RE: New Years Eve at SINSULL's From: catspaw49 Date: 01 Jan 10 - 12:31 PM I told that story somewhere else last night Sins and said then that from the first time I heard Mick's voice I knew we were actually brothers......but he sings a helluva' lot better. So did you ever tell Kendall he'd forgot to pull his pants up after leaving the john or did he go home that way? You definitely need younger friends............ Spaw |
Subject: RE: New Years Eve at SINSULL's From: ClaireBear Date: 01 Jan 10 - 01:00 PM We sang "Holy Ground" for you at 9pm (your midnight) -- did you hear it, or do we need to sing even louder? "... You're the girls I do adore, And still I live in hopes to see The Holy Ground once more." Seemed fitting, somehow. Though Charley, Kendall and Brett aren't girls of course. But still I lives in hopes to see them once more (or in Brett's case, once), too. Happy New Year! |
Subject: RE: New Years Eve at SINSULL's From: kendall Date: 01 Jan 10 - 01:40 PM I feel like crap today and I only had one drink! |
Subject: RE: New Years Eve at SINSULL's From: Jeri Date: 01 Jan 10 - 01:55 PM Kendall, next time, use a glass, I think the reports of impending weather doom was a conspiracy to keep people home. Bah! |
Subject: RE: New Years Eve at SINSULL's From: John MacKenzie Date: 01 Jan 10 - 01:56 PM That's possibly why, you should have had more mate. |
Subject: RE: New Years Eve at SINSULL's From: Charmion Date: 01 Jan 10 - 02:51 PM Edmund and I were very, very quiet. After a duck dinner, we watched a movie -- Monsters Inc., not bad but no earth-moving experience, either -- and then I went to bed at 10 over Edmund's protests. He stayed up till midnight (on general principles) and then retired himself, accompanied by Bill the cat. We were sincerely sorry to miss the Mainiacs' New Year's Eve party, but if you were having weather misery it's just as well we stayed at home. Today I feel refreshed and rested for the first time in weeks, if not months. It's been snowing here off and on since Wednesday, not heavily but quite persistently; yesterday's driving was downright treacherous. Edmund is out clearing the mouth of the driveway so we can go out to see the new Sherlock Holmes. The family feast -- usually the last blow-out of the holiday seas -- is tomorrow, and then we have to buckle down to get ready for the return to work. Bleah. |
Subject: RE: New Years Eve at SINSULL's From: gnu Date: 01 Jan 10 - 03:43 PM Jeri... "I think the reports of impending weather doom was a conspiracy to keep people home. Bah!" Nope. It's selling tickets. Stay tuned to the station for more news on the devastaion and destruction surely on the way... so we can boost our ratings and charge our advertisers more money. |
Subject: RE: New Years Eve at SINSULL's From: kendall Date: 01 Jan 10 - 04:02 PM Why do we celebrate new years in the middle of winter anyway? |
Subject: RE: New Years Eve at SINSULL's From: Big Mick Date: 01 Jan 10 - 04:46 PM ..... and so I was busy singing songs and playing tunes until damn near 3:00 AM. I have got to get a different line of work ...... like singing songs and playing tunes during daylight hours. I had hoped to call the Maine-iacs but it was not to be. Spaw ..... when you and I fart in unison, it is pure harmony. I think we are twins separated at birth. It is the only possible explanation for the filial harmonies produced by our flatulence..... All the best, Mick (BBRRRRAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWMMMMPPPPP ..... poot ...... poot .... ) |
Subject: RE: New Years Eve at SINSULL's From: SINSULL Date: 01 Jan 10 - 05:49 PM Charming... Jeri - this storm we are about to enjoy is a big one IF...I would not have made the trip. Honest, I thought Brett and Wakana were going to be here for a while. We are looking at 16" os snow starting Saturday. Wind. Flood tides. Armageddon. Maybe not. But I have a warm puppy, four cats and enough leftovers to last three weeks. Happy New Years, all. |
Subject: RE: New Years Eve at SINSULL's From: ClaireBear Date: 01 Jan 10 - 06:21 PM Hey Mick, there's a pub in Sonoma that always hires MichaelR's Irish band for an "Irish New Year's party." It's a blast, and the best thing about it is that they celebrate the New Year on Iris time -- i.e., 4pm here. A little later where you are, but still it could work well for you. At that rate, you could play tunes til 3am, and still be tucked in bed by 11:30. |
Subject: RE: New Years Eve at SINSULL's From: Jeri Date: 01 Jan 10 - 07:35 PM We could get up to 15", but it looks like you START there and go up to 20-sumpthin' or 'a shitload', as I like to put it. And wind. You ever see that Stephen King movie 'The Storm of the Century'? Roanoke Colony. I do not want to go up there only to find '"Croatoan' spray-painted on your tree lobster! Be careful. It looks like Gnu might be buried until August... |
Subject: RE: New Years Eve at SINSULL's From: SINSULL Date: 01 Jan 10 - 08:27 PM Storm of the Century? I'd have blown that obnoxious creeps brains out and gotten on with the celebration. Happy New Year! |
Subject: RE: New Years Eve at SINSULL's From: Jeri Date: 01 Jan 10 - 08:50 PM It did have some entertaining fake Maine accents. All the evil dude wanted was the children anyway. Big deal. I don't know why, but whenever the weather gets really cold and snowy, I love watching colder, snowier movies. 'The Savage Innocents' (with Quinn the Eskimo), 'Jeremiah Johnson', 'North to Alaska', 'White Fang', 'The Red Tent'... OK, maybe not that last one. Anyway, I watch them and I feel warmer. Then my power goes out and I head to your house. (Seriously, it's the ice storms that do that shit.) Is this all off-topic? Does anyone care? I'm still sorry I missed the party. I haven't had real ham in ages and I missed Brett & Wakana. Maybe we should do next year in Guam? |
Subject: RE: New Years Eve at SINSULL's From: kendall Date: 01 Jan 10 - 09:15 PM We have two fifths of Scotch, plenty of food, plenty of oil for the furnace and a 5600 W generator if the power goes out. Bring it on. |
Subject: RE: New Years Eve at SINSULL's From: John MacKenzie Date: 02 Jan 10 - 05:12 AM Pull up the gangplank Jack, I'm aboard ;) |
Subject: RE: New Years Eve at SINSULL's From: kendall Date: 02 Jan 10 - 05:19 AM Not quite the same thing John. My gangplank is out to anyone who needs to come aboard. |
Subject: RE: New Years Eve at SINSULL's From: John MacKenzie Date: 02 Jan 10 - 05:41 AM Agreed, but if you is snowed in, they may not be able to benefit from your largesse my friend. Happy new year to you and Jacqui. John |
Subject: RE: New Years Eve at SINSULL's From: SINSULL Date: 02 Jan 10 - 10:55 AM Treasure of the Sierra Madre I will cut Seamus open and climb inside to stay warm...maybe not. |
Subject: RE: New Years Eve at SINSULL's From: jacqui.c Date: 02 Jan 10 - 11:19 AM I'm in for the duration and taking the opportunity for a couple of really lazy days - I was too tired New Years Eve to stay up late - the spirit was willing but the flesh was definitely weak! January will be a busy month so a few days total R&R will probably be a good idea and with the snow piling up there's a damn good excuse not to go out at all. |
Subject: RE: New Years Eve at SINSULL's From: Charmion Date: 02 Jan 10 - 11:52 AM "I'm all right, Jack -- I'm inboard" is how my dear old Dad put it. Most definitely *not* a Mudcat theme song, and rarely heard (I'm sure) among the Mainiacs. It's still snowing here. Edmund is out hunting and gathering, and we are actually almost ready for the final events of the Ottawa festive season -- a call on a sick friend, and the Chaplin family dinner. Roll on Spring, say I. Like Kendall, I have always wondered why we celebrate New Year in the depth of winter. The first of May would be perfect. |
Subject: RE: New Years Eve at SINSULL's From: John MacKenzie Date: 02 Jan 10 - 11:56 AM It was a joke for fuck's sake |
Subject: RE: New Years Eve at SINSULL's From: Micca Date: 02 Jan 10 - 11:57 AM Charmion, that was given as "I carest not for thy predicament Jack, for I am in the dinghy" in several ships I served in. |
Subject: RE: New Years Eve at SINSULL's From: Jeri Date: 02 Jan 10 - 12:12 PM You boys... I don't think the forum needs to know about your 'gangplanks'. If you want to wave them around in public or 'pull' them 'up', please first consider our sensitive natures. |
Subject: RE: New Years Eve at SINSULL's From: Bat Goddess Date: 02 Jan 10 - 12:20 PM Charmion, some of us celebrate the first of May, too -- if you're going to dance naked out in the elements (which tend to be, well, "elemental"), May is a hell of a lot better than January! Linn |
Subject: RE: New Years Eve at SINSULL's From: gnu Date: 02 Jan 10 - 12:34 PM My bro used to call me every first of May and say, "Hurray, hurray, it's the first of May. Ootside F****** begins TODAY!" Giok... everyone knows it was a joke... an old one, but... And, as for the snow squall, I am gonna do what my Gramma Owens used to do... add some extra turnip and carrots to the stew and accept the fact that I live in a wonderful part of the world, even if we get a few inconveniences now and then. And, I have new shingles on my roof so the 120kph winds don't worry me as much this year. |
Subject: RE: New Years Eve at SINSULL's From: kendall Date: 02 Jan 10 - 01:15 PM I haven't been snowed in since I was a boy. I remember one time it was two weeks before we got plowed out. Snow up to the telephone wires and that is no joke. My brother in law had a 1934 Ford, (Bobert will love this) and it started after a while, but it would not move. The grease in the transmission and differential was so cold it stalled the engine. Actually, my question was a serious one. Why? |
Subject: RE: New Years Eve at SINSULL's From: GUEST,Dani Date: 02 Jan 10 - 01:32 PM Thank you, Jeri. I am late to the party, and all I could think of was a line about Kendall's gangplank. Happy New Year, All : ) Dani |
Subject: RE: New Years Eve at SINSULL's From: gnu Date: 02 Jan 10 - 02:10 PM Kendall... because Jan 1 is on Jan 1? |
Subject: RE: New Years Eve at SINSULL's From: ClaireBear Date: 02 Jan 10 - 03:06 PM It's a fair question, Kendall. I seem to remember from my long-ago past as a Renaissance Faire staff researcher that in 16th century Europe, the new year was celebrated on March 25. Not even the first of the month. Look up "New Year" in Wikipedia for a variety of dates celebrated by a variety of cultures. Here's what it says about March 25: "In Annunciation Style dating the new year started on 25 March, the feast of the Annunciation. This was used in many parts of Europe in the Middle Ages, and was the style introduced by Dionysius Exiguus in AD 525. Annunciation Style continued to be used officially in the Kingdom of Great Britain until 1 January 1752, except Scotland which changed to Circumcision Style dating on 1 January 1600, the Act being passed on 17 December 1599.[18] The rest of Great Britain changed to Circumcision Style on the 1 January preceding the conversion in Great Britain from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar on 3/14 September 1752. The UK tax year still starts on 6 April which is 25 March + 12 days, eleven for the conversion from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar plus a dropped leap day in 1900." Reading that page, it looks like we can blame January 1 on Rome. |
Subject: RE: New Years Eve at SINSULL's From: Bat Goddess Date: 02 Jan 10 - 03:11 PM Tom and I were snowed in for 3 days in April 1982 (a couple months before our June wedding). My boss kept calling to find out when I could get to work -- the town couldn't get a plow down our road even with the town clerk living next door! (Those of you in New England know what that means -- the town was SHUT DOWN!) They finally got a gigantic front end loader through, which made my boss very happy. This was back before the road was paved; not sure whether that made any difference or not. Linn |
Subject: RE: New Years Eve at SINSULL's From: kendall Date: 02 Jan 10 - 03:26 PM Come to think of it, That was the last time I was snowed in. April 1982, we got 24 inches of snow all at once, but it didn't take us two weeks to get out that time. ] Dani, cellar! (I'll be right down) hehehe |

We had a wonderful dinner and a couple of songs to sing along with but I couldn't stay awake......midnight is way past my bedtime!!!! Thanks for hosting Sins -- thanks for all the generosity you provide with your house and gatherings there. Life in SoPo would be less rich without you! (PS - agreed Tom's dips were divine. The man can cook!) |
