Subject: BS: Quebec forest fires From: Mike in Brunswick Date: 31 May 10 - 07:54 PM We can smell the smoke in the air here in Brunswick, over 400 miles away. What's it like for those of you closer to the action? Mike |
Subject: RE: BS: Quebec forest fires From: bobad Date: 31 May 10 - 08:02 PM Where is Brunswick? I awoke at 5:00 AM smelling smoke and listening for crackling to make sure it wasn't our 125 year old wood farmhouse burning. The whole day has been hazy with the smell of smoke in the air. I am in eastern Ontario. |
Subject: RE: BS: Quebec forest fires From: Jeri Date: 31 May 10 - 08:17 PM On the news tonight, they said people in Boston, MA had been reporting fires after smelling smoke and seeing the haze as the smoke drifted down the coast. Where I live in NH, it's hazy, but it may just be hazy. |
Subject: RE: BS: Quebec forest fires From: Jeri Date: 31 May 10 - 08:27 PM Come to think of it, when I got up this morning, I remember smelling smoke and thinking it wasn't really cold enough for the people across the street to have a wood fire going. They weren't, but the smell went away and I quit thinking about it. |
Subject: RE: BS: Quebec forest fires From: Ebbie Date: 31 May 10 - 08:30 PM Quite a few forest fires in Alaska too. None close to Juneau - if the forest above us ever caught fire we'd be in deep doo doo. No place to go but into the ocean. A few years back they had a big fire in the Yukon Territory and here in Juneau we had astonishing sunsets. |

Subject: RE: BS: Quebec forest fires From: Ebbie Date: 31 May 10 - 09:28 PM Wow. The Boston skies are fearsome. |
Subject: RE: BS: Quebec forest fires From: Mike in Brunswick Date: 31 May 10 - 09:33 PM "Where is Brunswick?" Midcoast Maine. Twenty five miles north of Portland. Mike |
Subject: RE: BS: Quebec forest fires From: bobad Date: 31 May 10 - 10:04 PM I shoulda known that, it came to me after I posted, I've been through there more than once. |
Subject: RE: BS: Quebec forest fires From: SINSULL Date: 31 May 10 - 10:11 PM Could smell it in South Portland and I was wondering why my neighbor had his woodstove lit on such a warm day. Local fire departments have had their hands full with people calling in smelling smoke. Are all our friends in Canada safe? SINS |
Subject: RE: BS: Quebec forest fires From: Jeri Date: 31 May 10 - 10:34 PM It REEKS outside now! It must be horrible if you're actually in Quebec. They've told folks in Montreal to shut their windows, turn their air conditioners on, and up their asthma meds. |
Subject: RE: BS: Quebec forest fires From: Charmion Date: 01 Jun 10 - 10:42 AM At 6:45 on Monday morning, when I left the house for work, Ottawa smelled like a fireplace and the city was alive with fire engines and police cars zooming about. I thought something big -- like perhaps the Parliament Buildings -- was burning downtown, but the smell wasn't right; too much like a barbecue before the meat goes on the grill. By mid-morning, you could hardly see the Peace Tower. The wind changed during the afternoon and the smell was almost gone by supper time. It started to rain about midnight and conditions are much better today. |
Subject: RE: BS: Quebec forest fires From: Ebbie Date: 01 Jun 10 - 12:58 PM Alaska's fire season started early and they say that May has been a good deal more like July's events. Today there is light mist in the air in Juneau but we need actual rain to dampen (no pun intended) the fire danger here. We are in the middle of our normal brightest, dryest period of the year (mid-April- end of June). As we like to say, on July 5th it begins raining. |

Subject: RE: BS: Quebec forest fires From: maeve Date: 01 Jun 10 - 04:18 PM The smell and smoke haze has been strong in our part of Midcoast Maine. Not a smell I need right now. My thoughts are for those close to the fires whose lives are disrupted right now. maeve |
