I have recently aquired two boxes of material which seems to have belonged to a jazz pianist called Muriel Roberts. There are photos,newspaper cuttings,letters she received from publicists in New York and other places in the USA, a demo record and a demo reel to reel tape. There is a lot of material in the boxes including sheet music from writers in the USA asking her to record their music. I can not find anything about her on the net, can anyone out there shed any light on Muriel for me. I would be very grateful.

Roberts Dies

Elizabeth "Liz" Muriel Roberts, who ran a cool, locally-based progressive music format on Brunswick MD's WTRI (1520 AM) in the mid-1990s, died on 1/8. She was 57. No cause of death was noted. Born and educated in England, Ms. Roberts worked for the BBC before moving to the US in 1981 to join NPR in Washington DC as a producer. In 1993 she moved to Loudoun County and bought WTRI. Roberts' WTRI left the airwaves in 1997 to be reborn in 1999 with a new owner and a Spanish format (which lasted until mid-2000).

Her real name was Muriel R Fendell.The letters date from the sixties. One of them is from Robert Lissauer, president of Lissauer Music Companies Inc. and is to verify the production of a record album.

Muriel Fendell was my piano teacher when I was 9 - 11 years old. She was from Paterson, NJ. Her father, Dr. Stanton J.D Fendell was my English teacher at Eastside High School. Is she still around and playing---she could play the fastest scales of almost any piano player I ever heard

Muriel Roberts (Fendell) is my aunt. She was a beautiful jazz pianist and a better singer than I'll ever be. Stanton Fendell was my grandfather. My aunt is currently living in an assisted living facility in West Palm Beach, FL. I know she'd love to hear from you and get the materials. The facility is Windsor Court, 3700 N. Muriel Roberts had an excellent jazz trio date for Dot Records, Dot 3173, Flower Drum Song. She plays with technical prowess and jazz feeling, and on the record she stretches out on long improvisions.   (Four tracks on each side, all from the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical Flower Drum Song.) Her acompaniment is Ernest Furtado on bass and William Clark on drums.   My best guess is that it's from 1959 or so, although I don't have access to a discography that mentions the session.

I don't know a blessed other thing about her, but her one record gives her a measure of immortality and gives anyone who hears it the spiritual uplift of the best jazz.

Very helpful thread on a great pianist. I have her 1965 Scepter Records (#530) release: "Music For All Times & Seasons". She teams up with Ernie Furtado andRonnie Bedford.

Muriel passed away on February 14, 2014. She was a cousin of mine and a great talent. I'm so happy to see there is interest in her.

Music for All Seasons is on YouTube. Mint copy is or was listed on eBay for $900. Amazon used copy $675. I haven't found Flower Drum Song which as I recall, was quite good.

Her album on Dot is outstanding. The song "The Other Generation" is really cool! I wish she had recorded more, but we're probably lucky to have what we have. If you like jazz piano trios, find her lp on Dot.

She was a family friend and the girl friend of my uncle Simon Kalish would love to own som of her music at the time i was a young child but remember her well
