This just in from somewhere in Europe:

An old rancher is talking about politics with a young man from the city. He compares U.S. President George W. Bush to a post turtle. The young man doesn't understand and asks him what a post turtle is.

The old man says, "When you're driving down a country road and you see a fence post with a turtle balanced on top, that's a post turtle. You know he didn't get up there by himself. He doesn't belong there; he can't get anything done while he's up there; and you just want to help the poor, dumb thing down."

Well danged, Sorch! If history repeats itself and Daddy Bush didn't give a danged for the nuthin more than war, then the Juior will be ripe for picken'. It's all gonna come down to the economy in '04. It it's still flat, Junior's goning home. Ain't enough flags to wrap himself in, not enough boggiemen to be dispatched, and he'll follw Daddy to pasture.

I might even vote for a Democart (yuck!...) if it means getting this very one demensional zealot in the rear view mirror.

Only thing I'm concerned about is that he and his gang are going to call off the elections. Yeah, he'll get some of his Sauid oil friends to get their kids to pull another 9-11 bonehead stunt and there goes the democracy.

(Ahhh, Bobert. What democracy? Didn't the guy allready steal it?)

Nevermind...

Bobert

I would like to think there is a chance Bobert, but I fear that Sorcha's hard headed analysis is more likely to be right. I would be very surprised if Bush has not effectively already won next November's election. Effectively, that is what this war was about. Not in my wildest imagination can I imagine the US electorate turning against a president who has "won a war and introduced freedom and democracy to Iraq." (I would say that with a snigger, but my sense of humour has just deserted me).

IF he goes on to *conquer* Syria, Iran, Pakistan or any others, it could get long and drawn out and folks are not going to like that. PLUS, there are many major companies which have not prospered at all under his regime, in fact quite the opposite, esp. the airlines. They are not going to stand by and do nothing and watch him get elected, again. He made promises about the economy, healthcare, and other domestic issues in his State of the Union address, which have flown out the Window of Forgetfullness...that big empty part of his brain through which the wind blows. That brain of his which has't a clue on domestic economy issues. BUT, people are not going to forget and neither are the companies. His is a narrow focus when it comes to those who benefit from his world domination practices...the others are going to get tired of it and go after the little bugger.

BTW, B&J, my dad loved the Post Turtle story!

The best "Cure" for a Post Turtle is a 15lb sledge hammer. You heft it high, pull down and..............
The fence post is knocked in another foot, but the top is not split! - something cushioned it?

Kat, I would be delighted to be wrong. However, US elections are not debates about issues. They are markets between competing products in which substance matters very little and presentation is far more important. The election of Ronald Reagan twenty years ago should have woken us all up to that. Halliburton, Texas Instruments, Microsoft et al will not lose money on this war. You, the ordinary taxpayer, will have to foot the bill - along with us in Europe. The budget deficit will rise, inflation will rise and unemployment will rise in the US. These ought to be "the issues". They won't be. The issue will be who can muster the resources needed to win a US election. Donald Duck could do it if he had the resources available to George Bush. I fear he will win (indeed has already won) easily.

Resurrecting an old thread, Mcain and Palin are the new Post Turtles. The term is all over the internet referring to their campaign.

I believe the post turtle analysis of Geo Dumbya originated some years back with Molly Ivins - who I sorely miss.

A friend sent me a longer version of the story, this time with Palin on the post. She thought it might be Garrison Kiellor, but Molly Ivins makes even more sense. I do miss her also.

Can you just hear (read?) the columns she would be writing this time around! This election was made for a wit like hers.

I've just been adding this to Wikipedia. Some older references are there.
