Subject: RE: BS: Sighting of Flying Dutchman From: katlaughing Date: 11 Sep 08 - 10:45 PM That's a great kite, Charley! Wow and the beach is gorgeous! Thanks! (My brother used Flying Dutchman tobacco in his pipe when he used to smoke. I've always had a soft spot for the story etc.) |

Subject: RE: BS: Sighting of Flying Dutchman From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 11 Sep 08 - 11:47 PM Thanks, Charley. I've never seen a kite shaped like a ship before. I have often thought that it would make a nice afternoon to combine kite flying and traditional music. Nice beach. No wires. |

Subject: RE: BS: Sighting of Flying Dutchman From: Charley Noble Date: 12 Sep 08 - 08:49 AM I never believed this ship-kite would get off the ground but it did with ease and grace, and it was perfectly balanced. Everything aboard is friction fit; we actually put it together that morning. The shop that Nor bought it from has since gone out of business, but not because of their aeronautic engineering skills! By the time we were through the spool had come apart and we were left with an incredible tangle of kite line, but the kite was fine! Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: BS: Sighting of Flying Dutchman From: ClaireBear Date: 13 Sep 08 - 11:58 AM How about a Viking ship? |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Sighting of Flying Dutchman From: Charley Noble Date: 13 Sep 08 - 12:46 PM Thanks Jeff and Claire- The "Rainbow Ship" likes as if it's in the same family. The one we have actually has its masts and yards made of wood. Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: BS: Sighting of Flying Dutchman From: sapper82 Date: 13 Sep 08 - 06:40 PM I know Chatham had a Dockyard, but never saw the beach before!! Or is this a different Chatham???? |

Subject: RE: BS: Sighting of Flying Dutchman From: EBarnacle Date: 13 Sep 08 - 07:28 PM Der Fliegunder Hollander rides again. That viking ship looks more like a cog than a sierauber, as viking ships only had a mainsail rather than a main and topsail. [I know, I know marine artists call it rivet counting.] |

Subject: RE: BS: Sighting of Flying Dutchman From: Charley Noble Date: 14 Sep 08 - 12:59 PM Sapper82- This is Chatham on the elbow of Cape Cod in Massachusetts. There is a small harbor around the corner protected by a barrier beach. The beach we were on was below a Coast Guard station and lighthouse, which you can see in the background of the photo in which Eli is launching the ship-kite. Your Chatham is probably the famous Royal Navy shipbuilding harbor, now moldering away in all its past glory. Cheerily, Charley Noble |
