Subject: Another title request: About Donegal From: luigib Date: 31 Mar 01 - 02:13 AM Last September I heard a beautiful Irish folk ballad in a small club in Donegal Town. The chorus goes something like this: "Somewhere in Chicago, where the shadows hit the walls, There's a man who is dreaming of the hills of Donegal." If anyone knows this haunting piece, please let me know!! Thanks, Luigib |

Subject: City of Chicago From: GUEST,BHanger@earthlink.net Date: 29 Jul 01 - 02:52 PM Can you help me find the rest of this song, and it's composer/lyricist? In the city of Chicago, as the evening shadows fall There are people dreaming of the hills of Donegal. Some of them knew fortune, some of them knew fame... thank you! |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: City of Chicago From: Joe Offer Date: 30 Jul 01 - 01:02 AM Hi, Brían & Guest - Your response time is pretty good, but you have a way to go. I believe the record was made by Sorcha, two minutes for a reply including a clickable link. Jeri and Pene made that mark, too, and I believe somebody may have done it once in a minute. They make me feel old - my best time is three minutes. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: City of Chicago From: Wolfgang Date: 31 Jul 01 - 11:40 AM Martin Ryan has made it in two minutes, I have as well, and it's Sorcha who has done the one minute clickable link at least once. Wolfgang |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: City of Chicago (Barry Moore/Luka Bloom) From: Joe Offer Date: 26 Oct 20 - 05:36 PM Needs some cleanup CITY OF CHICAGO (Barry Moore, AKA Luka Bloom) In the city of Chicago As the evening shadows fall There are people dreaming Of the hills of Donegal Eighteen forty seven was the year it all began Deadly pains of hunger Drove a million from the land They journeyed not for glory Their motive wasn't greed A voyage of survival Across the stormy sea CHORUS Some of them knew fortune Some of them knew fame More of them knew hardship Died upon the plain They spread throughout the nation They rode the railroad cars Brought their songs and music To ease their lonely hearts CHORUS |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: City of Chicago (Barry Moore/Luka Bloom) From: DonMeixner Date: 26 Oct 20 - 11:09 PM I find it a very clumsy song to sing. I only know it from a friends performance of it and have never heard anyone else do it. Of course that's just me. And then I can't stand The Voyage or The Old Man either. Don |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: City of Chicago (Barry Moore/Luka Bloom) From: GUEST,Jerry Date: 27 Oct 20 - 12:07 PM Try one of Christie Moore’s recordings (I think there is more than one), probably accessible on Spotify and or Youtube. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: City of Chicago (Barry Moore/Luka Bloom) From: DonMeixner Date: 27 Oct 20 - 03:51 PM Thanks Jerry. I listened to Christy Moore and Luka Bloom. I prefer Luka Bloom(Barry Moore) and his is eminently more singable than the other versions I have heard. Don |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: City of Chicago (Barry Moore/Luka Bloom) From: GUEST,Jerry Date: 27 Oct 20 - 05:36 PM I see in my Christy Moore Songbook, from 1984, that the time signature changes a bit in the chorus, though only between 2/4 and 4/4. |
