Eammons Kitchen (EK) was interviewed this morning an one NPRs syndicated short programmes called, Lagniappe. We were on because of some local news to Monroe LA (we're playing at one their favorite Folk/Celtic venues called Enoch's). During the interview the host asked us about our music research and we todl her that we took advantage of the excellent research available to us - we named specifically Dan Milner & Paul Kaplan's book A Bonny Bunch of Roses and, of course - the Mudcat Cafe.

I believe this programme is apt to be played at your local station at various times thoughout the week, so you may just catch it. We'll put up a link to the recorded show, once it is available on the website of the LA affiliate that created it.

I know we all appreciate the Mudcat DT and forum, and value its wealth of info - but if ya haven't seen Dan and Paul's book, I hope you get a chance to ... it's a gem!

Jed makes a very good point. Those of us who are performers should always be aware of opportunities to promote the site as well as those (Like Dan Milner, Rick Fielding, Folk Legacy and Sandy and Caroline, Dick Greenhaus) who make it such a wonderful place. Can't wait to hear it, Jed. I will try to find out what time Lagniappe plays on WBUR in Boston.

... the show's been and gone, apparently. We did a live broadcast on the morning of Aug 9th. I understand the show is offered for all PBS radio, but don't who else may use them.

The radio host was asking how we research the folk music we select. Our truthful answer was that we pretty much take advantage of the research of others! We talked about Dan's book, and Mudcat.

By the way, the pub we played in Monroe LA (and this was a Monroe radio station) was a treat! Great folks, small place, but it was well attended. We'll be back there as often as scheule permits.

Loved the content of this book, but the two copies I bought fell to bits as soon as they were opned, and all the pages became loose. I ended up taking the book apart and puting it in a looseleaf folder. Still works fine, but as a collecter, it cost my sensibilities dearly.
In the many hundreds of books I own this is only the second time this has happned to me, the glue Oak used on the spine seemed to have denatured. Have a number of earlier Oak publications which are fine.
Was this a unique problem on a batch that came to the UK in the begining? Are current published copies OK?

Pages that flew out from between the covers were the cause of many a complaint back in the 1980s. I just don't know whether the bindery unknowingly used crappy glue the day the first 10,000 were made or what it was... but there was a definite problem and my working copy, like that of Dita/John was also in a looseleaf binder.

In any case, I have bought some books to sell at my gigs over the last 4 years and, whatever the problem was, it seems to be solved now because there are no new complaints. I had refrained from selling books for many years.

Well, glad you like the book guys. A man asked me to autograph a copy at Sidmouth a few weeks ago and that always is a special treat.

Dan, I'd dearly like to have your book, and your recent CD as well. I think I saw it mentioned somewhere that you are coming to Bremerhaven, Germany for a shanty festival in October or so. Would you please let me know the precise date? Maybe I could come over from Kiel where I live.

Dan, I've had that book since 1984, never made the Mudcat connection! I bought the book when I was just getting into folk music the second time around, and keep finding new things in it. (I've always loved to sing "Wings of a Gull", and have never seen it or heard it anywhere else.) And yes, my copy is falling apart in chunks. Interestingly, two other Oak books -- O'Neill's Music of Ireland and Happy Traum's Fingerpicking Styles for Guitar, which are older, are intact. But there are other books from other publishers which are also shredded; maybe it was a particular manufacturer. Anyway, a belated thanks for a wonderful resource.

Dan, don't sweat the binding, it's not like it was hard cover. I just put my bunch of Roses in a thick 3 ring binder, worked better that way any way. You ought to sell autographed 'reassembled musician's versions, first crappy edition', they'd probably be a hot item! :)

Jed, congratulations on the show, hope it pops up around the country. And how amazing to hear that MONROE now has multiple Celtic venues! Wow!
