Can you suggest any songs associated with the month of November ie: (A) Any songs with November in the title (B) Any songs with a November date given in the lyrics (C) Any songs referencing an event that is known to have occurred in November even if the lyrics do not actually say so.
It would be very helpful to have links to performances of the songs and also more sources of information about them.

Below is an alphabetical index of the titles collected in this thread so far. If a title in this index is clicked then you should be jumped to the section of the thread in which most of the discussion and links for that title occurs. If you just want to add a new post to this thread use the “Post to this thread” or POST buttons to jump to the end of the thread. I shall sometimes rearrange “ late” posts to group them with the appropriate main area of discussion so that they are not overlooked. Or I might add in-thread links between separated posts on the same songs When I add to someone’s post I make this clear by doing so beneath an orange line like the one below.- Regards, GeoffLawes

Scottish outlaw and fiddler James MacPherson was tried and executed in November 1700. "Macpherson's Lament" is said to have been composed by him on the eve of his execution.

John F Kennedy, 35th President of the United States, was assassinated, 22 November 1963.

THAT WAS THE PRESIDENT
It's not only for the leader that the sorrow hits so hard
There are greater things I'll never understand
How a man so filled with life, even death was caught off guard.
That was the president and that was the man.

That Was the President, by Phil Ochs. Recording

I remember this one, November Snow. A group called Rejoice, consisting of a couple named Tom and Nancy Brown. No little about them. I have the album. From the late 60's I think. Musicians include Joe Osborn bass, Hal Blaine-drums and Larry Knechtel-piano and organ.

THE HUNTING SONG
I always will remember,
'Twas a year ago November,
I went out to hunt some deer
On a morning bright and clear.
I went and shot the maximum the game laws would allow,
Two game wardens, seven hunters, and a cow.

TURNING TOWARDS THE MORNING

Now October's growing thin
And November's coming home;
You'll be thinking of the season
And the sad things that you've seen,
And you hear that old wind walking,
Hear him singing high and thin,
You could swear he's out there singing
Of your sorrow.

Robert Willance and horse leapt accidentally from Whitcliffe Scar (212ft) nr Richmond (yes N.Yorks) in November 1606, we don't know a date or indeed his age. When I was away on a trainee engineer course I wrote a song of the tale and sang it at the Leap as part of the centenary celebrations in 2006.
It did happen in Nov but that doesn't get a mention in the song.

Do you have a title ,lyrics or recording that you can post JHW ?

The big man at Dolphin sure he sent for me:

We've booked you a berth in the water below,

I recorded the Robert Willance song to be available at the 2006 event. Had to abandon my website at end 2020 due to demise of Flash Player but still have CDs. I could real post one no charge to a PM'd address or type lyrics here even from memory.

Nice reminder of Cyril. Oft sung song.

WRECK OF THE 97

'Twas the twenty-second day of that November
And the clouds were hanging low
He took old 97 out of Washington station
Like an arrow shot from a bow

This version of the lyrics mentions November, but in fact the accident took place in September of 1903. Other versions, usually under the title "Wreck of the Old 97," don't mention a date at all.
Here's the 1924
recording by Vernon Dalhart, said to be the first country music hit record.

SOULING SONG (aka A-Soalin')

A soul, a soul, a soul cake
Please, good missus, a soul cake
An apple, a pear, a plum or a cherry
Any good thing to make us all merry
One for Peter, two for Paul
Three for Him who made us all

Sung for All Souls (2 November).

Recording by Peter, Paul and Mary.

ROBERT WILLANCE

Oh Willance he was a wealthy man, in Richmond did reside-o
And all to take of the winter’s air for Marrick he did ride-o
But ere the priory was into view he’s headed back for town–o
As on the top of the Whitcliffe Scar the mist comes clouding down-o

He’s picked his way all through the mist and as he heads for home-o
There’s many a stream aye and ditch to cross along the way he’s come-o
And when he’s come to the first bank side, “Go well me mare”, says he-o
And out she leaps all through the mist and safe has landed she-o

So when he’s come to the next bank side, again she leaps the mare-o
And here again at the third bank side so bravely through the air-o
And when he’s come to the next bank side, he tightly holds the rein-o
As across the ditch be short or wide she blindly leaps again-o

But here’s the edge of the Whitcliffe Scar, two hundred feet below
All tumbled over all through the air does horse and rider go
The poor mare came crashing down and broken lay and dead-o
And Willance he fell by her side, his leg all tore and red-o

And as he lay in the shivering damp, O Willance he did cry-o
If no-one finds me here tonight then surely I may die-o
But as he felt of his broken bones his face was pale and ill-o
Then he says, “Me mare, you’ve served me well but you may serve me still-o

For if I cut open my good mare’s side then I may not be lost -o
And if I place all my leg inside it’ll save me from the frost-o”
So he’s cut open her belly wide and that was how they found him
Alive and with his leg inside, the corpse still warm around him

They’ve taken him down to Richmond town, his leg they have took off him
And in Saint Mary’s old churchyard they’ve placed it in a coffin
And ten years after did Willance die and as he had decided
His leg it was dug up again and they were reunited.

Willance’s Leap why the place is known and you can still read there-o
His words upon the marking stone as thanks to God and mare-o.

1606 Hear Us.
Glory be to our merciful God who miraculously preserved me from the danger so great.

And every lad shall take his lass and sit her on his knee

SKIBBEREEN

It's well I do remember on a bleak November's day,
The landlord and his agent came to drive us all away;
He set my house on fire with his demon yellow spleen
And that's another reason why I left Old Skibbereen.

That's how it's given in the DT. Elsewhere, as in this
recording, it is set in December.

On Grafton Street in November, we
Tripped lightly along the ledge
Of a deep ravine where can be seen
The worth of passion play.

Oh, I loved too much and by such and such
Is happiness thrown away.

ONLY OUR RIVERS RUN FREE
(Mickey MacConnell)

When apples still grow in November,
When blossoms still grow from each tree,
When leaves are still green in December,
It's then that our land will be free.
I wander the hills and valleys,
And still through my sorrow I see,
A land that has never known freedom,
And only her rivers run free.
