Herself heard that Count Binface has said to the major parties: "Stand aside, chaps, and let me deal with him." He's promised to build one council house.

"The Mad Hatter's Tea Party"
According to the original book, no such party, no such event.
Lewis Carroll never referred to 'The Mad Hatter'.

Clearly, references to ‘Mad Hatters’ may have a basis in the phrase, ‘Mad as a Hatter’ which, of course, derives from the mental-health issues commonly suffered by hatters in years gone by which are believed to result from the use of mercury in the hat-making process.

Yes, I know the derivation of 'mad as a hatter'. But 'Mad Hatter's Tea Party' is clearly a reference to 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' where there is no character by the name/title 'The Mad Hatter'.

Yes, Nigel, I know all that - you’re not the only one here who had a decent education. There was, however, a chapter entitled ‘A Mad Tea Party’, at which the Hatter and the March Hare were present. Another possible reason for the frequent (mis)quotation.

However, I was simply putting forward a possible explanation for references to ‘The Mad Hatter’ for Sandman’s benefit. As it was he who brought ‘The Mad Hatter’ into the discussion, I didn’t think naming him would be necessary. Obviously my mistake…

I *wish* I could remember where I read one proposed answer to "Why is a raven like a writing-desk?" It may or may not have been Martin Gardiner's Annotated Alice; I do remember being more annoyed than somewhat at the author, on finding he'd left spotting the mathematical in-jokes as an exercise for the reader.

Meanwhile, someone should put "IN THIS STYLE 10/6" on a card, and pop it into Farridge's hat-band.

I won’t be in the least bit surprised if Froggy Farage wins the poll. The same knuckle-dragging, racist flag-shaggers who voted for him two years ago will vote for him again for sure. What the others will do is by no means certain, and anything could happen.

I really hope it doesn’t happen, but I fear it will. Watch this space, I guess.

And, apparently, Burnham might have been a little naughty in nominating himself for the post of Leader of the Labour Party.

I'll wait for non-facebook clarification of that little titbit.

Not quite the way you put it, Nige.

From Yahoo News...

"ANDY Burnham has broken parliamentary rules by filming social media content on the Commons estate without permission, it has emerged.

The soon-to-be prime minister shared a video of himself in the Parliamentary Estate on Thursday morning after he voted for himself to become the next leader of the Labour Party.

Burnham appears to be on course for a coronation as prime minister, as he was the only declared candidate when nominations for the next Labour leader opened on Thursday morning.

However, the Makerfield MP has reportedly fallen foul of Parliamentary rules after he recorded the brief social media video as he did not seek permission to do so.

So it seems he hasn't 'been a little naughty in nominating himself for the post of Leader of the Labour Party', just in filming himself on the Parliamentary Estate and posting it on SM?

Just a small point of difference but, knowing your predilection for seeking flea-eggs, worth pointing out?

Don't know if this is the right place to send congrats on getting The Bayeux Tapestry back within your borders for however long.
1066 Harold annoyed and the country lost. (Okay, more than annoyed).
1776 George annoyed and a few colonies distracted (More than annoyed but apparently he got better).
2026 Apparently the tapestry will be laid horizontally, but the whole will be viewable as a single entity.

Nigel, never having been a member of the LP (and, for much of my life, not even a Labour voter), I don’t know the answer for certain. I do seem to think that a Labour MP can nominate himself/herself, but only if he/she has the support of 20% of their fellow Labour MPs.

So I suppose the answer seems to be “Yes and no”! ;-)

Whatever, Burnham seems to be the PM-in-Waiting. Whether that will turn out to be a good thing remains to be seen. Personally, I’m not so sure it will but, for everyone’s sake, I hope I’m proved wrong.

Up between dreams and am looking at news on the phone, where a YouTube posting is telling me that a young white male is under arrest, and then I see on the laptop that a young man has been released. I do not know a thing about Ms. Widdicombe, but this sounds troubling. It is also so fresh and recent that I think I'll just look up the woman and her writings and let the crime news sort itself out for the time being. No need to indulge in the inevitable rumors and tales.

I don't know if this is life imitating art, but a show I was watching last year, called "The Diplomat" had such a character who got involved with international events with the deaths of Britons...in the middle of the first season she is killed by the Prime Minister in a rage, if I remember right. Not to trivialize by any means but high emotions and violent politics have worked their way well into our societies and are getting less stable, not better.

My personal suspicion is that one factor at work here is how few people in this country who saw active service in a world war are still alive.

There are plenty of Americans and Europeans around who have been in recent military actions. World wars are hard to find these days. And they won't be fought as in the previous century.
