Well, me and the P-Vine gotta go to New Orleans in March fir a danged azalea convention (don't even ask...) and will be comin' home thru Athens so we can see her son, d.i.l and grandyoungins and then to Ashville where we'll be arrivin' on Friday, March 19th and staying thru Sunday mornin' before heading home...

I've heard that Ashville has a purdy active artist and musican community but really don't have much of a clue about places to go there...

Anyone have any suggestions???

B~

Music in Asheville. This is a weekly publication. Check it out just before you head that way.

More Asheville Stuff (See Tressa's Jazz and Blues club.)

Then, of course, there is Biltmore. Don't know what the gardens might have to offer the end of March. Still pretty chilly over there.

I second the Laughing Seed. But there are a lot of good eateries there.

Lucky you- it's great to visit any time of year - and by March the flowers will be blooming in the valley. A WONDERFUL undersung town, it's like Taos, or Austin or a little San Fran. Music in lots of clubs. Hit Malaprops Bookstore for coffee, check the mags and bulletin boards for things to do. Walk along town and check out the galleries, specialty stores, and enjoy the vibe. Visit UNC for arboretums, art exhibitions, talks, etc.

Biltmore is the largest house in America, and has resplendent grounds and tours..so I hear lol b/c when I'm in Asheville I never go there- I head to the most beautiful landscapes East of the Pacific- the great Smoky Mountains first off, only an hour away on the Smoky Mountain Highway. If you have time check out the waterfalls along 64, or the hundreds years old trees in Joyce Kilmer National Forest (3 hour drive?) Or go to the high country. Or Chimney Rock. Or visit Black Mountain, a sweet little artsy town just east of Asheville (take it slow over the mountain, that's a first gear rise) Enjoy enjoy enjoy.

The only thing I missed doing in Asheville was...to move there.

"... azalea convention ..."? I was told there are no such a thing to be had at this time of year. I was all over the net and phoned several florists to try to get an azalea for Aunt Mary's daughter after Mary passed a couple of weeks ago and... not a hope.

Boy the woiy, those people in New Joisey talk funny, eh?

Unless you be the one on the trigger end of things...

A fine musician by the name of Jeff Zentner is from there.. maybe he'll be playing somewhere in town when you're there...

he's a buddy of Jayto aka JT Oglesby

Some of the most spectacular scenery on the Blue Ridge Parkway is between Asheville, Brevard and Henderson. south from Asheville is the Shining Rock Wilderness area and the Parkway summits Pisgah Mountain.

Thanks, Janie... Looks like I'll be bookmarkin' those sites...

No Biltmore fir me, thank you... While in New Orleans we'll spend two full days going from one garden to another so I'll be gardened out... Plus, the P-Vine has us stoppin' in Atlanta to go to a nursery that specializes in hydrengeas... Whoopeeeeee!!! I mean, we allready have 50 of 'um... But, hey...

Now as fir azaleas, gn-zer... Ya' don't get 'um from the florists... And they will be in bloom in March in New Orleans... I say, "Heck, P-vine... We can just wait until the end of April and ours will start bloomin'" Then she runs off to the bedroom, slams the door and I gotta do the "Dance of the Dieng DucK" (D of the DD) for 3 days which is equivalent to a couple hunnert "Hail Marys" the best I can figure...

I wish, Mrrzeeee... These things is like roller coasters... You get there... Everything is planned... They even got buses to take ya' to the garden tours and bus captains, which is a fancy word for jail guard, who won't let the bus leave until they have you back on board... Then at night it's one borin' speaker after another... And then after three days, you get paroled...

Yeah, I'd love a home cooked meal... Maybe play a little cajun music... Drenk a little wine...

Yeah, P-Gator lives there, too an' he's been to my house here in Virginny but will they let me go off an' see him??? Well, heck no, they won't...

So looks like Ashville will be the only Boberdz day outta the 10 days an' I been trying to hook up with a blues band that was in one of them sites that Janie gave me and maybe play a little music with them...

Oh, leeneia... "Fair's fair???" Geeze, I don't make the P-Vine come here and and mud around with the muddies so I don't see why I gotta...

Nevermind... I once heard that love can be measured by what one is willing to give up for it so...

...I must love the heck outta the P-Vine...

Hey, I'll survive this...

B~

"Then at night it's one borin' speaker after another..."

Oh man, you aren't going to stay and listen to the speakers are you? Go hear the dueling pianos, go down to Jackson Square. Visit the Quarter....

When we were last there (before Katrina) we took a ride on a riverboat built in 1911 and listened to Dixieland. I wonder if you can still do that.

And finally, do you have your dress?

I haven't been for a few years, but in the summer there was live music in several different cafes. There was a folk session at a pub called the Green Man (I think...?). Food was nice pretty much everywhere we went, and in the square there was an outdoor silent cinema with live keyboard accompaniment, which was fantastic. The whole town is so lovely - there were notice boards with leaflets about getting your chakras balanced and reiki massage and all that - it was like there was a fug of patchouli hanging over the place.

Chimney Rock is well worth a visit, as is Biltmore - I've been to a lot of big posh houses, but it really is jaw-dropping in terms of all the mod cons it had when it was built. A truly extraordinary place, and the audio tour is fantastic.

There is also the Folk Art Centre just off the Blue Ridge Parkway - when we went there was a little festival going on, and I won the Gee Haw Whimmydiddle competition! It was one of the finer moments of my life.
