This goes a long way to explaining the coordinated efforts that the Republicans are making to drag us back to the 19th century in terms of social justice legislation.

An aside but related: What I don't understand is how decent people can sign on to this kind of thing.

I had a lot more written but was beginning to splutter, so I'll let it rest there.

I dunno, guys. Your naming names like this, reminds me too much of the early 1950s. No matter whose side it's on, isn't it a blacklist?

"I heard a nasty rumor that some ALEC members are former Boy Scouts, military veterans and even members of the Chamber of Commerce. For shame!"

No doubt some were. Here's what they learn as they continue their scouting.

serving america's state legislators

With nearly 2,000 members, ALEC is the nation's largest
nonpartisan, individual membership association of state
legislators. ALEC is one of America's most dynamic
public-private partnerships with nearly 300 corporate and
private foundation members. ALEC provides its public
and private sector members with a unique opportunity
to work together to develop policies and programs that
effectively promote the Jeffersonian principles of free
markets, limited government, federalism, and individual
liberty.

alec scorecard

ALEC has developed comprehensive educational projects
designed to promote free-market public policy at the
state level. While these projects produce and disseminate
a wide range of research and informational material, the
centerpiece is model legislation. To date, ALEC members
have considered, written, and approved hundreds of
model bills, resolutions and policy statements. Historically
during each legislative cycle, ALEC legislators introduce
over 1,000 pieces of legislation based on these models,
approximately 18% of which are enacted.

the alec annual meeting

The ALEC Annual Meeting has grown to become one of the
nation's most prestigious state level conferences, and has
been described as the "largest gathering of conservatives
held each year." Nearly 2,000 state legislators, business
executives, and public policy experts gather for four days
to discuss the issues and develop policy.
Each meeting features 35 to 40 workshops, plenary
sessions, and task force meetings, as well as numerous
networking opportunities at social events.

pdq, I'd thought (erroneously it seems) that the job of town/city, state and federal legislators was to represent the wishes of the electorate--you know, the people who put them in office. I guess that's changed now, huh? For shame, for sure. You're on the wrong end of this one, imo.

This is not about sides, it's about a corruption in the legislative process. I won't post anymore lists, Joe. But think about it, will you? When legislative representatives are at the beck and call of a relatively small lobby group, a group beholden to business interests, does that not usurp the process democracies deem so important?

In fact, you have my permission to delete the posts I made here. I'll instead put blue clickies to the places (all but one an ALEC web page or site) I got them from. I hope that will satisfy your unease with them.
