Is anyone (not necessarily in business)being effected by the downturn in business activity?

I run a small electronic component distribution company in NW England, the effect of this recession is crippling us. Two staff have had to go on short time working and I'm seriously looking at how long we can survive. Most of our customers are manufacturers of equipment, and they just ain't manufacturing.

Sorry to whinge, but things are really tough out there.

Any thoughts?

Sorry to hear that John, you must be feeling pretty stressed. Sing yourself a nice calming song or two - I know it won't help, but you'll feel better..
I work in mobile phone networks software, and business is pretty rickety in that area, but luckily I work for a very big company which can ride things out fairly well. Nothing to stop them getting rid of the mobile comms side of things though - so every so often we get a bit jittery......
I hope things pick up for you.

I work in the agricultural supply industry, or the food chain, but we've already been shafted by the reform to the CAP, and latterly, Foot and Mouth.

I can well believe the stark realities facing businesses now. I heard EMI had lost a third of their share price yesterday. Put me in mind of the old adage :-

"What's the difference between the EMI and the Titanic?"

"The Titanic had a good band!"

Yep we are in the West country and hubby was made redundant four weeks ago His boss could not keep him on any longer They have had knock on effects from foot and mouth lost orders ect The boss is now trying to run the buissness on his own

Things are tough all over. The only effect it has on me is a decrease in the price of natural gas. I still plan to come to England, so, I'll be spending some money over there. Probably not enough to relieve your recession.

John, a couple of my friends who run their own business are finding it a bit of a struggle at the moment too.

I have certainly noticed a big down turn in my area of work, and one sure sign, is the distinct lack of adverts for design related jobs, and I keep reading the big agencies in London are cutting staff all the time...

Yes, I think something is brewing, batten down the hatches and sit tight!

A friend of mine with an airline related business is in particular, noticing a BIG change in his work.

Gloomy though things are, It's not going to stop me going to Llanstock next month OR to the folk club for a sing & play (and a pint) tonight!

I'm looking at other things that might help us ride out the recession; a couple of specialist items we would produce for niche markets....you try anything when things get as tough as this.

Looks like I might have spoken too soon. We have a BIG meeting scheduled for 12 noon today, and the arrangements around it are different to anything else we've ever had. My guess is that either they have sold off our part of the business while its still reasonable - or that we are out the door..... Scarey stuff!
Will let you know afterwards...
Still - I'd have more time for singing.

Another trip to the doctor, and, the word is not good. I still have an irritaion in my throat, and, two of the best cant seem to nail it. If I dont shake it by Tuesday, I will be forced to cancel my visit. Or, I should say, postpone it. Today, I am unable to talk, let alone sing. The throat specialist put me on a steroid called Prednizone, but, that feels like more fishing to me. Damn.

A damned shame. I hope it gets better in time for your visit...were you coming to Llanstock? KingBrilliant, I hope the meeting was ok. It's 13.40 (Cheshire time!), so hopefully it's all over and done with.

And the meeting was.......
Our division has 1,500 heads worldwide, of which 15% must go. That 15% will be mostly from the UK & Ireland.
Whole product lines will be scrapped.
Doesn't look too good - and much depends on the criteria they apply for selecting who gets made redundant.
Theories in the office are getting more & more depressing. Still, X-fingers....

Things'll be fine - just unsettled for a while I guess. Last time I was redundant I went to University for 3 yrs as a mature student and had a great time.
Its amazing how many options are open when its sh*t or bust. Luckily I've got rose-tinted glasses & so its always rosy.....

Ah!, I remember the good old days. Manchester 1977 had not had a raise in three years, wife five months pregnant. In for a big life style change. It's times like this when I remember what brought me to Canada. There again working in the aircraft industry has never been that steady either.
