Hi

My name is Erica, I'm a young girl from Italy (23 years old).
I'm a singer-songwriter inspired by american authors (people like Iris DeMent), my dream is to spend some months in the States.

I'm wondering if any of you knows of a job thats available for someone like me.

Thank you.

Erica

...of course, I'll be very glad to be hosted by some of you (or your friends). I can be very helpful in a house! (and, also, I can sing!).

Erica

There's plenty of work here in America. Unfortunately the good payin' jobs are being shipped out of the country at an alarming rate.... but if you're willing to wait tables, or work as a clerk, then America is for you... Making money with music is becoming more and more difficult unless you just but a hat out on the sidewalks and sing fir a buck or two...

is   it my imagination, or is this   thread remarkably similar to the one posted asking about summer jobs in Ireland??

Both posters asked for   help in finding a job for "someone like me.'

Erica, sembra che tu non abbia convinto i pescegatti. Di ', sei davvero una ventitreenne italiana? Nel caso, ciao.....

Iris Dement is American. I would personally welcome you to America..not much work where I am but some..but your problem will not be finding some sort of work, but dealing with immigration. Start checking that out. Do you have a degree? Perhaps you could come as a visiting scholar of some sort....do you have some savings you could live off? If you would be willing to provide evidence that you don't use drugs, have a criminal history etc...are just a nice young woman...we probably could find places for you to stay and visit for a while...a few weeks here and there for free in exchange for perhaps cooking, housecleaning etc.....Oh I would love a cook!!!!!! I just live in a tiny place by the beach though..

Peg, I would welcome a sailing partner; especially if she could cook kielbasa LOL. It would be a great way to spend next summer.

geez, I thought Iris was Irish. Go figure; thanks for correcting me. But she is still a singer, not an author! (not as far as I know).

Kendall, I am not real big on boats or the ocean, really. But if were I'd be the best galley slave, er, cook, ya ever saw.

BUNAC is a good organization for young people to find work abroad.

Peg, would you know the distinction between author and songwriter in Italian? I certainly wouldn't.
A bit of latitude for someone using a second language wouldn't hurt.

And if it is the same person wanting to travel to Ireland as well as America, so what?

Erica, I'm sorry I can't help as I live in England, but I hope you find what you're looking for.

Let us know if you do travel, and good luck!

Thanks to all for the answers.
I'm genuine, I'm sorry if someone thought I've been fooling the people. I'm only... an italian girl whit a passion for north-american folk music (and for traveling).

Thank you, Mary Garvey. I really appreciate your offer and your advices. I work hard to save money. And yes, I think I am "a nice young woman". I don't use drugs (I don't drink and I don't smoke!), I don't have a criminal history.
I can cook quite well and I'll be happy to do housecleaning for the people who give me a temporary home!
Maybe the next spring I'll be ready to go. If you have some other advice I can give you my e-mail address.
Thank you again!

Thank you, Noreen, for your wise words about languages!
I want to explain the "mystery" of the similitude between the two threads: I'm not the same person, I just copied the phrase, which seemed to fit my thought (remember that english is not my native language).
If I ever go in England I'd like to know you!

O.K. Iris DeMent is not only a singer, she write his songs (in italian you say she's an author), and I like so much his writing and singing.

This is for Paola. Sorry, now I write in italian (no secrets, anyway!)

Ciao Paola

Great...do come in the spring...I live way on the westernmost coast of the US..there are a lot of people in Seattle and Portland and California who would put you up for a while and then send you to the next place..check out airfares for both Seattle and Portland..I don't have a functioning car but you can get to my place by bus etc...but work would be a problem... mg

Oh sorry, I thought this thread was about the film by Barbara Koppel!

Good luck to you Erica! If you are a student or are working with what we call non-profit or charity organizations, you might be able to get a work visa or be able to work as a volunteer while you are here. Often, American families will put up someone from another country for free, if they volunteer for an organization or church they are associated with. I'll try and post some websites for you in the next few days, as my time allows.
