Subject: Joe From: Phil Date: 23 Nov 98 - 04:25 PM has a lot to Offer us knows nearly everything, including a lot of obscure lyrics, and even reformats unreadable contributions so who is Joe and what does he do? Presumably works for Mudcat... other questions - are Offer and Gatherer (Nick, a collector of Scottish tunes) their reall names? How do songs make their way on to the DT database? Who selects them, what criteria? Do lyrics we write in to the forum make their way to the DT (if not, it seems rather a waste in some cases/if so, again how do you select them and chose the 'best' versions?) |

Subject: RE: Joe From: dick greenhaus Date: 23 Nov 98 - 04:39 PM Nobody works for Mudcat. We do have volunteers, however, and Joe is a distinguished one. I have no idea what anybody's real name is, except for mine, Susan's and Max's. Songs posted on the forum wind up in the DT. Via me. I try NOT to pick only the "best" versions, although I do try to minimize redundant entries. Some songs take longer than others to get into the DT, as I'm trying to keep a balance of a)songs with tunes and those without,b) trad vs. Singer-songwriter c)types of songs and d) whatever makes sense to me at the time. |

Subject: RE: Joe From: Pete M Date: 24 Nov 98 - 02:27 PM Phil, don't let Dick fool you. it's well known that Joe, and rumour has it, everyone else who contributes to the Mudcat forum, bar one, is part of a fiendish program written by Max. Trouble is even he has forgotten who is the real one! Of course that makes you a figment of my imagination so why I'm writing this I don't know, ...don't know ...don't know ...don't know ...don't know ...don't know HIC ABORT code IEW239074 An error has occurred. Subject: RE: Joe From: Bruce O. Date: 24 Nov 98 - 06:42 PM I think it's probably Joe that I have to thank for fixing some of my typing and submission booboos. |

Subject: RE: Joe From: Joe Offer (his real name) Date: 26 Nov 98 - 01:20 AM That was me fixing format, Bruce. I guess I can type <br> (line breaks) faster than anybody alive by now (although I usually type it once and then paste it). Happy Thanksgiving, everybody. -Joe Offer, eating tofu this year and not sure I like the idea- |

Subject: RE: Joe From: Big Mick Date: 28 Nov 98 - 12:23 AM Joe, I must have a complete report on the Tofurkey. I am still an unrepentant carnivore, but I am very curious what this tastes like. Let me know. all the best, Mick |

Subject: RE: Joe From: Joe Offer Date: 28 Nov 98 - 12:31 AM Well, Mick, I have to say Thanksgiving dinner wasn't bad. Everything was traditional, except for the lack of meat. The substitute was some kind of breaded pseudo-chicken pattie that didn't taste half bad. I'm at my favorite sister's house and the company was wonderful, so I ain't complaining. Still and all, it seems strange to be here at the birthplace of Thanksgiving and not have turkey for Thanksgiving dinner. I heard lots of sea songs (and sang a few) at Mystic Seaport this week, so it's been a nice vacation. -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: Joe From: murray@mpce.mq.edu.au Date: 28 Nov 98 - 12:56 AM I recall many years ago sitting in my favorite Ir*sh bar in Phila. One of the guys who had been drinking a bit asked me how I enjoyed my Thanksgiving turkey. I told him I had spent it with some Chinese friends and we had steamed fish and bean curd. He didn't look happy about that. He seemed to think the American thing to do was to eat turkey on Thanksgiving, and anything else was unpatriotic. Being a young pedantic sn*t at the time I informed him that Thanksgiving can't be an American holiday. The nation hadn't formed yet when the custom started. Fortunately, older wiser bodies came over and bought drinks all around, and blood didn't flow. I'm glad things have opened up back there and you can admit publicly to eating bean curd on Thanksgiving ;-} Murray |

Subject: RE: Joe From: Big Mick Date: 28 Nov 98 - 12:58 AM It is great to hear that you had a nice vacation, my friend. You work very hard at this stuff that we all benefit from. I sure do appreciate it. I have been interested in trying this stuff. Take care of your self. Mick |

Subject: RE: Joe From: GUEST,Nigel Gatherer Date: 06 Dec 00 - 06:05 AM I have stumbled on a posting which says "Nick gatherer - is that a real name?" or similar. Well, for my sins, it IS the name I was given at birth. It has caused some amusement considering my hobbies (song and tune gathering). |

Subject: Joe.exe From: Joe Offer Date: 06 Dec 00 - 03:21 PM I think it's rather nice to have an unusual surname - even though it sometimes makes people a bit uncertain about my existence. In fact, there are times when I doubt my own existence. Max sends me an occasional e-mail to reassure me of my existence, but can I believe him? -Joe_Offer.exe- |

Subject: RE: Joe From: Bert Date: 06 Dec 00 - 05:36 PM There was a guy who 'claimed' to be the elusive Joe singing at the Mudcat Gig. Dunno if it really was him, this guy sounded too good to me. Perhaps he is a program after all. |

Subject: RE: Joe From: Susan A-R Date: 06 Dec 00 - 10:05 PM Diabolical of Max, ain't it, and how did he come up with those lighthouse photos, and "Come on Over to Our House" and that amazin holoram in Deering NH? As for me, I had turky with sausage stuffing for Thanksgiving, but then, if you run a vegetarian restaurant, there are some things you've just gotta do. Susan A-R Say, did Max make up Santa Claus too? |

Subject: RE: Joe From: Sorcha Date: 06 Dec 00 - 10:12 PM Of course, and the Tooth Fairy, Little People, and Casper the Friendly Ghost too. There is nothing Max can't do, din'cha know? LOL, Welcome home, Joe Offer. PS--I posted a URL for the Waltz You Saved Saved for Me MIDI....... |
