And I thought that was another alternative thread to the Betty Friedan Obit thread.

The study got a lot of criticism immediately after the publication.
Low-Fat Diet's Benefits Rejected

I heard this morning that McDonalds thought they were smart and found a new way to test their fries. Turns out they're worse than we first thought and they have to report it that way.

You're better off eating the brightly colored fruits and veggies, and get some good quality fat in your diet.

Just how many fat 90 year olds are there around?

Eating a low fat diet may not be proved to prolong life but if it keeps you slim and being slim means you are likely to live longer than if you are fat then common sense tells me that I should eat less fat if I want to live longer and feel healthier. Or am I missing something here?

Yeah, it's a bit more complicated than that, Moses. Fat blokes who excercise, for example, have fewer cardiovascular problems than skinny blokes who are sedentary.

We all still die though. Order the fries and walk home. ;o)

The question really is,who is it that financed this "study".There is a lot of secret coporate funding behind "health research".I'm not telling anyone here anything they don't know already, but a lot of people will lap this up as gospel. Here in France, the country famous for "Haute cuisine"plus a healthy, ballanced diet, fast food joints are in abundance.A recent study said that the French people were growing in size, but it didn't say in which direction. And we don't know who funded that either!

Low-fat doesn't work that well for weight loss unless one balances the protein and carbs correctly.

This study may confirm the "good fat" diet of the Mediterranean where less instances of heart disease, etc. occur, even in overweight individuals, from what I've read in the past.

We use only olive oil and organic coconut oil (it's delicious on toast!)

yep...it is the TYPE of fat/cholesterol that is relevant. Reading labels and understanding the %ages is crucial.

One Dr. I heard discussing it said that altering the diet to eliminate fat late in life may not reduce the % of risk for breast cancer--it's too late by then. It must be a lifelong pattern.

So should we give up if we are over a certain age? Eat whatever we feel like?   No. As Moses pointed out, you do not see many overweight elderly. Eating healthy food and excercise will prolong your life and there are other benefits, no matter what this survey says.

Apparently a low fat potato is being developed even as we write.

Potatoes don't have any fat in them unless YOU add it. :)

"Fat does not make you fat. Eating too many calories makes you fat. It just so happens that a gram of fat has more calories in it than a gram of protein or carbs. However, the only thing that makes a person gain fat is when that person is eating more calories than their maintenance level, and then not burning them off through working out. Whether these excess calories in your diet plan are coming from protein, carbs or fat makes little difference."

I haven't gone in for the follow-up, but my doc had me go in for a medgem test, in his office, which tested my resting base metabolic rate, as I understand it. At the follow-up, they will tell me how many calories I have to eat to maintain the weight I am at, thus giving me a goal of less calories in order to lose even more than I have since the surgery.

CH, generalisations, again. Some people are unable to "get up off their fat asses" and I am not talking about myself. Do you have a shred of compassion in you for differently abled folks?

Also, have any of you been to a nursing home, lately. Not all old people are skinny-minnies. I remember when I worked in one...we had some very heavy, BIG people whom we had to have help lifting out of bed, etc. Also, there are other cultures where what we consider fat is more the norm and, plenty of elders who are heavy, without as much health problems as we have in our country.

Moses asked how many fat 90 year olds are around.

I have no data to offer, only a thought, that the frail 90 y-olds may in at least some cases have been very robust 70 y-olds.

When young I had a number of large elderly female relatives (the males mostly seem to have been on the small side, and short-lived) some would have been obese by today's standards. My paternal Grandmother, for instance had a 54inch bosom, a behind to match, and was around 5ft3in tall. Most of these ladies lived well past 80, some into mid-90's. By the time they died they had mostly shrunk again, ending life not exactly slender, but certainly not their former selves.

While it is not generally a good idea to carry too much weight, it should not be seen as an automatic recipe for a short life.
