D. Johnson performs acoustic 1930s delta blues in an authetic way that carries on the tradition of Robert Johnson and Son House. You can hear sound samples of his new CD "Doney Blues" at http://djohnsonblues.com/music.html and purchase the CD at http://cdbaby.com/cd/djohnsontunes2.

"If you ever wanted to hear Robert Johnson or Son House bring to life their immortal songs of the 20s and 30s, there is now a way to "time travel." Get "Doney Blues" the new cd by D. Johnson. The singing and the playing make them all sound richly authentic and darkly honest--the songs don't sound old or stuffy and this is no museum set. These are just great songs done really well with great respect to the style of the original artists. There are few opportunities in blues to hear this kind of artistry, to enjoy traveling back in time. Mr D. Johnson, thank you for making a great cd of some of my blues heroes. Everybody go buy this cd, and go hear this man if he plays close by. You will not regret it." The Sunday Night Blues Project

"...This is incredible stuff: Remarkably disturbing traditional slide blues cut from the same cloth of the likes of Son House and Robert Johnson. ...This music is lean, catchy, scary and in your face: everything it should be." Southwest Blues Magazine

"Johnson has a master's touch with his instrument ...If you are looking for well played, traditional acoustic blues, you'll find it here." Blues Access Magazine

OH, I thought this was a new release of stuff recorded in the 30s. Misleading title.

My first reaction was the same as yayaya's ~ I expected news of some kind of re-release of vintage recordings, and immediately felt betrayed by a self-promoting hustler.

After just a few moments, I relented and decided to give the guy a break. Maybe his music is worthwhile; it's much the same sort of thing many of us try to do, after all, and if the guy is a more shameless salesman-of-self than you or I, that might not be a bad thing. Most of us could probably do a better job of self-promotion than we do.

If we received a message like this from a familiar name, a member, we'd probably feel OK about it. As a way to introduce oneself to this online community, however, the above is a bit short on tact.

Meanwhile, I'll reserve judgement until I can hear some samples. Does he provide any on his very slick and visually attractive website? I'm not sure ~ since I'm at work and can't play audio right now anyway, I didn't look very hard...

When it says (D. Johnson) in brackets, is he claiming copyright?
The first post wouldn't have bothered me if he used a different title and stated that he is promoting his stuff. Nothing wrong with that.
The performances are ok, but really don't sound like Son House or Robert Johnson.

D Johnson may or may not have a "master's touch with his instrument" as claimed above, (I haven't listened to his music yet) but he certainly doesn't have a master's touch with his English grammar on the website. I quote :

"D. JOHNSON is a critically acclaimed slide guitar player that performs acoustic country blues and ragtime with a harmonica player. The idea behind the music is to recreate the sound that one would of heard in the Mississippi Delta in the 1930s.

Call me a pedantic old fart, but that sort of stuff on a website really annoys me ...

Charlotte...I would be interested in your opinion comparing your Complete Recordings of RJ to those found on the link in the post just above your last post. (It is a link to newly mastered copies of RJ's complete recordings).

I wish I didn't need to say this, but I do. The Youtube clip at least sounds like an able white boy trying to copy the blues. In a way this exemplifies the colonisation even of the blues that the white have carried out, and the alienation of the modern African-American from their roots.

If you want a white blues player Kris Dollimore is sheds better.

Oh, pleeeeze, Richard, do say your tongue was firmly in your cheek when you wrote that.

I like Kris Dollimore's singing and playing, still haven't got rouind to D Johnson yet.

In the sixties and seventies every UK folk club had guests once a month who were at least as good as this. And he should definitely sack the harp man.

Can Blue Men Sing The Whites

Oh Lord wish my bed wasn't silken sheets so tight
I got to keep my strength up got to do a show tonight
I'll have a cup of coffee while I'm taking in the news
No need to have a shave cause I'm gonna sing the blues

Well I think I'll get a massage maybe lose a little fat
So I'll have to go downtown in my brand new Cadillac
My valet comes and dresses me, I light a big cigar,
Because I like to look like Nimrod when I'm riding in my car.

Can blue men sing the whites
Or are they hypocrites to sing

And now it's getting near the time I gotta make the scene
I change out my dark grey mohair suit put on my dirty jeans
The band comes round to pick me up I holler Hello Boys
I gotta mess my hair up, I'm gonna make some noise brrrrrrr

Can blue men sing the whites
Or are they hypocrites to sing

Oh Lordy
Somebody help me

Charlotte (my pink half of the drain pipe)

Viv Stanshall - in memoriam
