Has our modern calendar even been around that long? How long did months used to be, anyway, back when October was actually the 8th month?

Every month that has more than 28 days has 5 of something. Every month that has 31 days has 3 days that are repeated 5 times. There is a 1 in 7 chance that those days will be Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Every year has 7 months that have 31 days. Therefore, in the long run, on the average, there should be one month per year that has 5 Fridays, 5 Saturdays, and 5 Sundays.

Are you sure this math is correct? Have you accounted for every 4th February having 29 days? This might tend to alter that calculation by pushing days beginning with March 1 in a leap year two days ahead of the immediate previous non-leap year. That is, if March 1 is on a Sunday, it would be on a Monday the following year...but in a leap year it will be on a Tuesday, etc. This means that in a leap year that might have had 5 ea. F,S,S that cycle might be disrupted.

Wikipedia has a nice article (by nice I mean not too technical) about calenderation (is that a word?). A quick reading did not touch on the FriSatSun phenomenon. Actually, that doesn't seem that special, as it would seem almost every three consecutive day sequence can occur five times in one month at some time or other.

BTW, the Gregorian Calendar, the one we use in everyday life, was devised in the mid-18th century, and was in general use in Europe before the end of that century.

Pope Gregory XIII introduced the Gregorian Calendar in a papal bull dated 24 February 1582. A few countries adopted it and others followed over the next few centuries. Adoption was slowed because of Reformation politics; Greece was the last European country to adopt it, with March 1, 1923 following February 15, 1923. Other calendars (e.g., Arabic and Judaic) are still in use, generally for religious reasons.

May 2009 had five Friday/Saturday/Sundays. October 2010 has the same, as will July 2011.

Open Mike, a while ago I was lying listening to morning radio, and the announcer stated that it was 7:7 on the 7-7-77, "And that won't happen again for another 1000 years!" Into my half-awake brain came the thought that neither would 8:7 7-7-77.
Or any other time and date. :-)

Can't remember why I was still abed at that time.

What happens every 823 years isn't merely an occurrence of five Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays in a month. It's the occurrence of five very particular Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. The ones which will occur 823 years from now, in 2833, will be exactly the same as the ones which will occur this month. It's like the movie Groundhog Day but on a grander and more convoluted timescale and, thankfully, without Bill Murray.

People (assuming there are still people around by then) will awaken on Friday, October 1, 2833, and discover they've been transported backward in time to 2010. They will discover that their abilities to communicate telepathically have disappeared, and they will have to learn how to blog and send text messages. All five Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays during the month will be affected by this chronospatial anomaly, though the four Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays will not. This will make for some remarkably confused folks by November first. It will take a month's rest, some really good drugs, and a sizable stimulus package from the Galactic Overlord before they return to normal.

Then it'll all happen again in 3656.

January this year Had five fridays, saturdays and sundays. Two monthe in a year. This will happen again for January in 2016, and for October in 2021.
