Subject: Womble shock From: GUEST,Rana Date: 31 Dec 00 - 09:13 AM Having just returned from England and having my fill of UK christmas TV I was somewhat surprised to see Roy Wood (ex-Move and Wizzard) team up with the Wombles (big furry creatures who live of Wimbledon common) for a Xmas release. What shocked me was that Pter Knight (ex- Steeleye Span fiddler) was a Womble. Does any one know of the identity of any of the others who may have been Wombled? Cheers Rana

Subject: RE: Womble shock From: alison Date: 01 Jan 01 - 04:08 AM They did a fantastic version of Grieg's "Hall of the Mountain King".......... "In the hall of the mountain womble"............ they've just re-run the wombles over here in Oz... took me back about 25 years... hahaha speaking of Roy Wood.. that's another difference between Oz and the UK.... back at home you wouldn't have gone a day at this time of year without hearing "I wish it could be Christmas every day"!!!!! slainte alison |
Subject: RE: Womble shock From: Whitcher Date: 01 Jan 01 - 05:19 PM Matt R do you mean Rick Kemp I saw him, Maddy Prior, Pete Knight and Maddy Prior and Rick Kemp's daughter at the Stables Wavendon (near Milton Keynes UK)in May 2000. It was a brilliant evening, relaxed and more like the early Maddy Prior I saw in the 70's. Rick played some exceptionally haunting riffs, a treat as I'd not seen him since he left Span about 15 years ago. The Stables is a great venue if you're in the area, it's in the grounds of Cleo Laine and Jonny Dankworth's property, and has just undergone major rebuilding to house more and allow for dances. They cover Jazz (obviously) folk rock pop blues and classical, and reasonably priced tickets too. ( I am not linked to them in any way but good work deserves good praise.) Harry |
Subject: RE: Womble shock From: Liz the Squeak Date: 01 Jan 01 - 07:19 PM I saw that, it was a bit scary! the wombles were mostly Mike Batt's band and anyone else who was hanging around the studio at the time.... Mike was Orinocho. LTS |
Subject: RE: Womble shock From: BigDaddy Date: 02 Jan 01 - 03:43 PM To the best of my knowledge, Peter Knight is still a member of Steeleye Span. He is certainly on their most recent recordings (Time, Horkstow Grange & Bedlam Born). That "ex" Steeleye comment briefly worried me. |
Subject: RE: Womble shock From: GUEST,Rana Date: 03 Jan 01 - 09:13 AM Big Daddy, Sorry if I worried you - I possibly made a mistake - there have been so many line-up changes over the years. Cheers Rana |

Subject: RE: Womble shock From: Morticia Date: 03 Jan 01 - 01:28 PM I agree with you Sledge, this is all nonsense...everyone knows The Wombles are real! |
Subject: RE: Womble shock From: Linda Kelly Date: 03 Jan 01 - 06:10 PM well not many people know this but one of the wombles was the son of Hattie Jaques and John Le Mesurier -which may mean something to some of you but probably not much to a lot of you. |
Subject: RE: Womble shock From: Lanfranc Date: 03 Jan 01 - 06:44 PM The child of a matron and a Home Guard sergeant a Womble - that's evolution for you! |

Subject: RE: Womble shock From: Steve Parkes Date: 04 Jan 01 - 09:11 AM I have it on very good authority (but no nmes, no pack drill!) that Maddie Prior was also in one the cossies for the BBC's first Top Of The Pops appearance byt the Ws. Witcher, do you live near the Stables? I'm in Milton Keynes, but sing at Bedford FC on Thursdays, as I'm not here at weekends. Steve |
