The Battlefield of Blair

To the tune of The Berryfields of Blair as sung by Belle Stewart

Now its battle time at Number 10, Blair's popularity's swelling,
There's every kind of media there, in every kind of dwelling,
There's tents, and huts, and caravans, with aerials and dishes,
And microphones with trailing wires, and men who look suspicious.

There's columnists from The Guardian, muckrakers from The Sun,
Producers from the News at Ten, and also Kirsty Young;
She tried to get an interview with a man from MI6,
Off the record , he said "No comment", but he let her take some pics.

There's reporters from the Western Mail, and CNN and Sky,
And someone else from Channel Five, who's come her luck to try,
There's camera folk from daily rags, and tramps from everywhere,
All looking for a living on the battlefield of Blair.

There's some who'll earn a bite or two of Tony sounding deep,
And some report from morn till night while folk would rather sleep,
They shout out "Hold the front page!", but the editor's not there,
There's cursing on the mobile phones on the battlefield of Blair.

Now there's families pictured on the screen, who've had to leave their homes,
And babies dead from lack of food, whose skin scarce hid their bones,
There's tragedy in Kandahar, t'would cause your heart to harden,
One man alone there is to blame, its Osama Bin Laden.

But before I put my pen aside, its this I'd like to say,
You'll travel far before you find a wiser man today,
Blair knows what he has to do , and when shove comes to push,
He's gathered many policies; he's plucked them from the bush.

This song probably needs the pen of Dick Gaughan to make it a bit more emphatic, but anyone else is welcome to suggest improvements.

Matthew,

it is a well written song already not in need of outside help. However, I'd leave out verse 5 in singing. It is fine by itself (verse 5) but in my eyes opens a new field of thought, too separate from the other verses.

Wolfgang
