Subject: BS: Suddenly...not a sound. From: Little Hawk Date: 24 Aug 08 - 08:46 PM Well, this is odd. My computer has suddenly gone silent for no apparent reason. Neither the speakers nor the headphones are delivering any sound no matter how I adjust them. This makes listening to music videos and watching stuff on YouTube pretty boring... Any computer experts got an idea what the problem might be? The only thing I did that was any different today was that I installed a new printer. |
Subject: RE: BS: Suddenly...not a sound. From: artbrooks Date: 24 Aug 08 - 08:54 PM Click on the speaker icon and see if it decided to "mute" itself. |
Subject: RE: BS: Suddenly...not a sound. From: Little Hawk Date: 24 Aug 08 - 08:58 PM Where do I find that speaker icon? I don't see it at the toolbar at the bottom of the screen. |
Subject: RE: BS: Suddenly...not a sound. From: artbrooks Date: 24 Aug 08 - 09:01 PM Do you have an arrow (<) to show hidden icons? If not, you can find it in Control Panel -> Sounds and Audio Devices. |
Subject: RE: BS: Suddenly...not a sound. From: Little Hawk Date: 24 Aug 08 - 09:02 PM Okay, I found it in the control panel and solved the problem. It wasn't that it was set to "mute"...it had been re-assigned somehow to the wrong device. I reset it and it's working okay now. |

Subject: RE: BS: Suddenly...not a sound. From: Rapparee Date: 24 Aug 08 - 11:41 PM I assumed that you had been cut off from all sound, that All Was Silence in Orillia. |
Subject: RE: BS: Suddenly...not a sound. From: Rapparee Date: 25 Aug 08 - 08:34 AM Hello computer, my old friend There's no sound in you again.... |
Subject: RE: BS: Suddenly...not a sound. From: ToulouseCruise Date: 25 Aug 08 - 10:34 PM I cannot help but continue... Hello computer, my old friend There's no sound in you again.... It seems there is no softly beeping, Made by the file that I was deleting, And the YouTube that was playing at the time Became a mime Within the sound of silence. Pirated songs I loaded down No longer make officials frown. Nothing but the keyboard's tiny click (A tone too quiet and monophonic) When our artbrooks of the Mudcat saved the day And asked no pay He solved the sound of silence. |
Subject: RE: BS: Suddenly...not a sound. From: Little Hawk Date: 25 Aug 08 - 11:09 PM Heh! Well, now I have another problem. I had to replace an old computer with a new model today. For one thing, the old one's motherboard went on the fritz. For another, it was five years old. Time for a replacement. So...I have the new computer here, it works great...but I get no sound from the speakers. The sound works fine in the headphones, however. The computer appears to know that the speakers are there, they are not muted, but no sound comes out of them. ????????? Well, I'll take another look at this puzzle tomorrow, I guess. In the meantime the headphones are serving well. |
Subject: RE: BS: Suddenly...not a sound. From: ToulouseCruise Date: 26 Aug 08 - 07:13 AM When you say the headphones work fine but the speakers do not, are you trying them from the same jack, or from separate jacks? My motherboard has the jacks for the mic and for the speakers reversed for some odd reason, you may want to try swapping. Might sound like a silly comment, but make sure that any required power source (AC, battery) is hooked up correctly, and your batteries aren't dead or inserted incorrectly. Can you test the speakers in something else, such as a portable CD player or iPod, or in another computer? It is possible that a wire became damaged during the system swap.... Brian. |
Subject: RE: BS: Suddenly...not a sound. From: Rapparee Date: 26 Aug 08 - 09:12 AM Or you could have your hearing checked. Or your speaker volume might be turned down at the speaker (there's usually a volume control). Personally, I think your hearing is going -- probably from all that Heavy Metal and Satanic Rock you listen to through your earphones, volume all the way up. I mean, don't you think an 800 watt amp is a little much for earbud use? Black Sabbath would sound the same at a level that didn't make your entire body look like a convulsion. |
Subject: RE: BS: Suddenly...not a sound. From: Little Hawk Date: 26 Aug 08 - 09:39 AM LOL! Gosh, I don't know what I'd do without your sage advice, Rapaire. You are a fount of knowledge and wisdom, yesirree... I much prefer external speakers to earphones...specially when listening to Ozzie Ozbourne (turned up to 11). But I gotta check on it later, okay? I have to take my car down to the garage first for some minor maintenance. |

Subject: RE: BS: Suddenly...not a sound. From: Bee Date: 26 Aug 08 - 11:53 AM It took me a while to get sound from my new computer's speakers. Too many input output devices and no idea where they were all set. Eventually figured it out, but it took me a week of trying different things and reading a lot. Good luck. |
Subject: RE: BS: Suddenly...not a sound. From: Rapparee Date: 26 Aug 08 - 03:25 PM You can always toss the computer and just read a lot..... |
Subject: RE: BS: Suddenly...not a sound. From: Little Hawk Date: 26 Aug 08 - 03:33 PM I do read a lot. You're just trying in your typical nefarious way to promote the rampant spread of libraries. You don't fool me. |
Subject: RE: BS: Suddenly...not a sound. From: Little Hawk Date: 26 Aug 08 - 06:46 PM Well, it turns out that it was a hardware problem this time. The old speakers apparently chose to die upon the departure of their old host computer. They must have missed it badly. ;-) I now have some new speakers here and they work perfectly. |
Subject: RE: BS: Suddenly...not a sound. From: Rapparee Date: 26 Aug 08 - 06:52 PM Poor old speakers. Dead of grief. |
