I'd agree. I think we need to start a thread called "mediocre songs and musicians" and see how many posts we get to it.
These "best" and "worst" lists of superlatives get really tedious.

There have been six "best" threads active in the last week, but only one "worst" thread - and that doesn't even count the superlatives other than "best" and "worst." (well, then I had to look, and there ARE no superlatives other than "best" and "worst" in the last week.

Nonetheless, I don't see why we have so many of these superlatives threads. But hey, I guess people must like them.

"best" threads are created by people who want to have an interaction with the world, but can't think of anything terribly creative at the moment.

They are are only slightly less tedious than "your favorite songs by ...[fill in some pop-folkie here]..." threads.

The superlative threads active today are:
  • Best band name ever?
  • Best CD name ever
  • Best cover songs?

  • I think it's a good day to launch my "mediocre songs and singers" thread...

"First" threads are more interesting. In principle at least, they involve a question with an answer out there waiting to be found.

At least "my favourite" rather than "the best" is honest about being purely subjective, and it can help throw up good stuff that you might otherwise miss.

What might be quite interesting in that line might be to see some people's "Desert Island Discs" choice.

Maybe this thread belongs above the line? Though I suppose you get listing threads about stuff other than music.

Well, I guess humankind has somewhat of an obsession with superlatives. In the Olympics, almost all of the competitors make extraordinary performances - but only the top three are recognized. I guess I should be pleased that the Olympics at least gives three prizes for each event.
But it seems a shame to identify one person as absolute best, and almost disregard the one that came in a tenth of a second later.
Same with songs or musicians - there is lots of extraordinary music, and I want to celebrate all of it.

I have a fascination with The Fabulous Superlatives.

Now if I gave a link to them this would be a music thread.

They sure do when they back up Marty Stuart. :~) The line-up may vary and thus the moniker.

The best second best might be Pete Best as the second best drummer that was in the Beatles.

Favorite may be a good word to use in place of best. Some of those threads led me to some good songs and performers.
