Bush declares Iran's weapon's of mass distraction are now embedded in N. Korean enclave in Australian outback Tony Bliar urges populace to put themselves down, pending immediate call-up! |
Subject: RE: BS: Geography for the Masses From: GUEST,mack/misophist Date: 27 Jul 06 - 08:46 AM All those maps I had to draw and label in grade school must have had some function. That was shameful. |
Subject: RE: BS: Geography for the Masses From: Georgiansilver Date: 27 Jul 06 - 10:31 AM I would definitely have done better..I loved geography at school...only problem was I had trouble finding the classroom! |
Subject: RE: BS: Geography for the Masses From: katlaughing Date: 27 Jul 06 - 11:31 AM Jay Leno is always doing things like that on his show; it's called "Jaywalking." Sometimes it's hard to tell if they are all set-up or for real. That said, if our admin. is as dumb as those examples, I'd say Australia'd better watch out! I loved geography and map-drawing in school, too. |
Subject: RE: BS: Geography for the Masses From: Rapparee Date: 27 Jul 06 - 11:36 AM The Idaho Legion has already purchased wombat masks so they'll be camouflaged when the US invades Australia, home of terrorists who are planning to cut off our supply of Foster's. |
Subject: RE: BS: Geography for the Masses From: JohnInKansas Date: 27 Jul 06 - 12:09 PM My major problem with geography is that most of the countries on the map now didn't exist when I was a schoolkid. Several that did exist have new names now, and some of those "nominally the same" have had borders rearranged to make room for the new ones. John |
Subject: RE: BS: Geography for the Masses From: Bill D Date: 27 Jul 06 - 12:39 PM Why, some of those folks couldn't tell Schleswig-Holstein from The Orange Free State! Appalling, I tell you! |
Subject: RE: BS: Geography for the Masses From: Les from Hull Date: 27 Jul 06 - 12:49 PM I sometimes think that all that stamp collecting I did as a kid taught me quite a bit about geography and history - not only where some of these countries are (were?) but also about particular national heroes such as Bernardo O'Higgins or Eva Peron or Dr Sun Yet San. |

Subject: RE: BS: Geography for the Masses From: Bill D Date: 27 Jul 06 - 01:31 PM My favorite: "It's too bad ignorance doesn't itch." |
Subject: RE: BS: Geography for the Masses From: Scoville Date: 27 Jul 06 - 01:39 PM I love Jaywalking but it's one of those train-wreck things; it's mortifying, but you can't stop watching. A shocking number of interviewees are teachers and students. At least I know Australia when I see it. Holy cow. I must confess I'm not entirely clear on the exact locations of a lot of the post-USSR countries (sorry, but I have yet to need this information in my day-to-day life) but I can get the right general area. John, if it makes you feel better, half the countries on that map didn't exist when ANY of us were school kids. |
Subject: RE: BS: Geography for the Masses From: GUEST,Jon Date: 27 Jul 06 - 01:42 PM Like jacqui c, I'd at least get somewhere in the right region. I'm not sure whether to believe this clip as showing genuine ignorance or not though. |
Subject: RE: BS: Geography for the Masses From: Don Firth Date: 27 Jul 06 - 03:41 PM Well . . . that certainly explains a lot. What in the hell are they teaching in school these days? Don Firth |
Subject: RE: BS: Geography for the Masses From: katlaughing Date: 27 Jul 06 - 07:13 PM Les from Hull, stamps were wonderful for geographical study, but so many of mine are SO out-date, like what JohninKS said about what he learned in school.:-) I still love the stamps; they're beautiful! |
Subject: RE: BS: Geography for the Masses From: GUEST,Jon Date: 27 Jul 06 - 07:22 PM The former USSR is the worst... |
Subject: RE: BS: Geography for the Masses From: Kaleea Date: 27 Jul 06 - 08:24 PM Yahooligans (yahoo for kids) has a game called "where in the world is" which divies up the world map by sections & you get chances to find the country before it shows you where it is. At the least, one might be able to understand such concepts as Europe, Asia, etc. |
Subject: RE: BS: Geography for the Masses From: GUEST Date: 28 Jul 06 - 12:57 PM My favourite, from a cousin, "ANYBODY can speak from knowledge." Kendall, I'd love the source of the splendid Goethe quote. Ta. ivor |
