Subject: Blues singer banned - discrimination! From: Will Fly Date: 09 Apr 15 - 10:37 AM I was recently outraged and ashamed that a great blues singer and guitarist from our area has been denied access to a local public house. The artist in question - a member of the Boots family of singers - was raised in the Adur delta area of Sussex (in the UK) and spent his formative years sharecropping on a smallholding on the banks of that river. As a child he tied chicken wire to the door handle of a barn and sang old roundelays while pulling and plucking on the wire. His father, recognising the boy's natural talent, bought him a cheap plywood guitar - and a legend was born. The boy grew into a gifted young man who used to practice his art while standing ankle deep in mud by the river band - getting himself the nickname of "Muddy" as he was always walking around the place with dirty shoes. Over the years, he became famous in the Adur delta area and in localities further afield, but was not always treated well. Discrimination has always been present and haunts him right up until the present day. Which was why I was saddened to see a notice pinned to the door of my local pub: "PLEASE LEAVE MUDDY BOOTS OUTSIDE" Outrageous! |
Subject: RE: Blues singer banned - discrimination! From: Reinhard Date: 09 Apr 15 - 11:48 AM Why outrageous? You are politely asked to leave him outside should he happen to accompany you. You'll probably start a fight in the pub if you come in with him... So just let him enter the pub alone. |

Subject: RE: Blues singer banned - discrimination! From: GUEST,Fred McCormick Date: 10 Apr 15 - 07:05 AM Come to think of it, I once saw Little Walter being refused service in a pub. They thought he was under age. |
Subject: RE: Blues singer banned - discrimination! From: Will Fly Date: 10 Apr 15 - 07:10 AM A "roundelay" comes from the French "ronde de lait" which, in colloquial English, means a milk round - which was what Muddy used to do to supplement his income... |
Subject: RE: Blues singer banned - discrimination! From: GUEST,M Date: 10 Apr 15 - 07:17 AM Of course from time to time, Muddy would help his Italian cousin Concrete in his duties... |
Subject: RE: Blues singer banned - discrimination! From: TheSnail Date: 10 Apr 15 - 11:06 AM It has often been my pleasure to see Woody rambling round the creeks of the Adur Delta. He is easy to spot at a distance giving ample opportunity to nip off down a side road and avoid meeting him completely. His presence outside a pub is also useful warning that there are likely to be equally disreputable (if cleaner) characters inside. |
