The Epsom Derby isn't until the first weekend in June. Perhaps you mean the Kentucky Derby?

Yeah The Kentucky Derby and Cinco de Mayo are both today.

Cinco de Mayo has become a more widely celebrated holiday in U. S. cities with Mexican immigrant population than it ever was in Mexico. It is spreading to other Hispanic communities as a convenient holiday.

As a lover of Mexican food, VIVA MEXICO!

I hope you had a super day for your holiday. I've never tasted tequila, but I seem to remember you have to put salt round the rim of the glass?

Do they call it the Kentucky Darby or the Kentucky Durby? I'll have to ask the sarvants.

Eliza... yes... but, more commonly you lick your hand to the side of your thumb knuckle and shake some salt on it, take a shot, lick the salt, bite a lemon wedge and throw up. Two shots will make you feel like you could rip trees out of the ground. Four shots will make you lie on the ground. I drank four shots of it once. I like beer.

LOL gnu, sounds as if I should try some, I need energy like that! Just to have the oomph to pull up a few weeds would do me fine!

On Cinco de Mayo in the few southern states that I have seen it celebrated, the beverage of choice is a margarita. An yes Eliza you were correct about the salt around the rim.

Tequila shots as gnu described are limited to "frat boy" types who like to drink in a showy manner.

My favorite way to take tequila is to sip a high quality brand such as Patron from a shot glass. But that is a very expensive way to drink.

Real Mint Julep

1 part good Kentucky Bourbon, like Eagle Rare
2 parts cold filtered water
mix in heaping teaspoon sugar
Crush in several mint leaves and mix
Fill with crushed ice
Crown with mint sprig

Should be served in a metal julep tumbler so the ice will frost the outside surface

Too much water. And it should be fresh from the spring behind the house, not from some bottle or tap. Sit on the veranda and watch the servants and poor folks work.

We went to Ls Costa Mexican restaurant, watched the Derby there, then to the beach to watch the "Super Moon" which because of the clouds was not so super.

I celebrated by going to Salem, Massachusetts! Nothing to do with Cinco de Mayo or the Kentucky Derby. My cousin and her roommate both turn(ed) 60 this year, so they decided to split the difference between their two birth dates and celebrate today.

On the way home I stopped for take-out at a locally-owned Mexican restaurant which I go to about four times a year and always on Cinco de Mayo. It was started by a Navy veteran who had been stationed in Texas and often made trips across the border where he made friends and learned to cook Mexican food. A heavy smoker, he passed away a few years ago from a variety of lung problems: asthma, COPD, and lung cancer. One of the cooks took over the business and last year renamed it and minimized the menu. (Originally it had been mostly Mexican foods, then later the original owner added barbecue and Tex-Mex items. The new owner returned to Mexican foods only.) As I pulled into the parking lot today, I thought it was strangely, though not completely, empty for Cinco de Mayo when it is usually packed at any hour on this date. Then I saw the realtor's sign on the door. Yup. Closed. Out of business.

And I haven't heard who won the Kentucky Derby.

AND they found a body in the stables! Wow! A come-from-behind win and a murder!

Why does this sound like a hackneyed mystery novel?

Lady Hillary and I kept it simple. We wore the colors of the Mexican flag while we worked at our regional rummage sale.

'Twas happy here. Our contra dance band was encouraged to wear a sombrero if we had one.

I put on my very fancy flowery hat, and went Derby-hatted instead, singing "Yes, we have no sombrero" to the tune of "yes, we have no bananas" during the break. Shame we didn't have any distinctly Kentucky tunes to play for the dance.

When I heard about a body being found in a stable, the mystery novels I thought about were those by Dick Francis.
