That's a shame. The landlord will probably regret it though. We used to have a regular weekly session in a pub called The Small Copper in Harlow, till a new landlord decided he didn't want it.

I gather the place is now like a morgue on Tuesdays. It turned out there were a lot more people used to drop in because we were there than the new landlord realised. He should have listened to what the old landlord told him.

Many years ago we were invited to run a session at a local pub called the Football. The first Sunday had a half dozen people. 10 or so weeks later we had a regular 50 person turn out. Then came the new landlord who said he thought he could do better.

2 weeks later we went in and found 2 local junkies, the landlord and his dog! We didn't stay but left with a great feeling of smugness...:-)

It doesn't help much I know but remember that people reap what they sow. When will they ever learn?

Seems the same story most places. A regular session got thrown out of it's local in the Spotted Dog, Forest Gate, for much the same sort of reason = change of landlord, thinking they could get more custom in if there wasn't this horrible noise coming from the other bar.... Seems the place is struggling since they left... when will people learn?

I liked the Jug, it's a shame to see it go.

Lost The Spotted Dog? A shame - we'd had some good people from there in sessions, and I'd a mind to visit it some time.

The Public Entertainment Licence nonsense doesn't help in getting a new home for a session when you lose one. And even if you do, it's dodgy advertising it in case the enforcers get to hear.

A bluegrass monthly session in Stansted Mountfitchet (The Cock) nearly got chopped when the local council came on heavy recently about PELs. Fortunately the landlord decided he wanted to keep it, and went to the hassles and expense of applying for one. But most landlords aren't like that - and he wouldn't have been if he hadn't got to know and like the session for years before the council came down on him.

The Glenfarg Folk Festival has been suffering from the same unwelcoming landlord problem, making the session musicians feel unwelcome. This year we've found a solution that probably won't be popular with the festival organisers; we've arranged an alternative event the same weekend at Kippin, near Stirling. No point in putting money in the pocket of a landlord that doesn't appreciate it.

Fionn, it's the same Forest Gate. The Spotted Dog is about 1/2 mile to the south of the Alice - down Upton Lane. It's a real Olde Worlde pub dating back to about the 15C. White clapboard exterior and a Victorian panelled bar with flag floors. A real gem in this part of London.

It had a restaurant which used to attract office workers from nearby Stratford and Ilford but was allowed to run down.

The new landlord (not the same as we had a falling out with) fell out with the blues musicians who used it and is now promoting it as a yoof pub.

We now play in an Irish pub in Stratford where there's no real ale but the landlord and landlady welcome us, provide us with sandwiches, and don't hurry us out at the end of the evening.

I saw this yesterday and chose to ignore it but since others have posted I will just say that although the Jug is not as it was there is still likely to be sessions there and the decision about the Yorkshire gathering is not yet finalised.

Yoof is the Estuarine pronunciation of youth. A youth pub will cater predominantly for young (probably under-age) drinkers who just want to listen to loud music. The pub will be offering a "chill-out" area for goodness sake!

The Old Black Bull in Stratford Broadway on Thursday nights. Just a few yards from the Old Town Hall. The music gets going after 9.30 and we haven't had a decent singer for a while as Terry has some throat problems. The music's mainly Irish but that just reflects the repertoire of the players.

And I don't get to go..... mainly because we can't get a baby sitter willing to stay til after midnight), and they don't want children there. At least the Spotted Dog had a garden that Bratling could play in, and they didn't mind here being there in the first place.

Dave - parking is restricted - the Multi Storey closes at 10.00, but there are rail and bus stations about 5 mins walk through the Stratford Centre.

Picking up on McGrath's point earlier about PEL's....is there no one out there with the knowledge or experience to provide a guide to help a landlord navigate the perils and pitfall of applying? If we could put up a template that any Mudcatter could print off and give to a landlord who could be persuaded to go for it if the path were smoothed slightly? I'll pick the brains of my local musical landlord this weekend and see what he says.

Apparently not, Bullfrog. The rules seem to "flexible" to suit anybody, and certainly not written in stone. (I'm in the US, not the UK, so I am probably wrong) Seems like the Authorities just interpret as they please on a case by case basis.

I think the cost of the PEL may be one factor in the Jug landlord's new attitude and since the Jug didn't have one before it may mean that there will not be sessions there.
