Subject: RE: BS: Geocaching From: Stilly River Sage Date: 22 Apr 06 - 11:30 AM My secret santa from the UK sent some information for it here around my house in Fort Worth, Texas. Unfortunately many of the sites have been ploughed under since they're building new housing developments in the last year. It's a nice way to keep your hand in the game as far as map and compass skills, or if you want to do it the easy way and use a GPS. . . :) SRS |
Subject: RE: BS: Geocaching From: JohnInKansas Date: 22 Apr 06 - 11:57 AM My impression was that the geocaching thing assumes that you'll use GPS. Perhaps it's grown to include other modes of search. There seem to be a number of organizations active, although I haven't kept notes on sites I've stumbled across. Although caches in the great outdoors are probably most numerous, there are some in urban areas, and I believe I saw one site that marked "handicap accessible" as one of the characteristics people could cite for their caches. Some of the GPS makers have bits of info on the hobby at their websites. (And some people appear to consider it "a bit more than hobby" - more like a life-style.) John |
Subject: RE: BS: Geocaching From: gnu Date: 22 Apr 06 - 12:53 PM Raptor... "What do you know about it?" I know that every now and then, when I am in the backwoods, I meet up with a bunch of yuppies in their fancy, shiny Jeeps and such who want to know how to get to "here" or "there" without scratching their snappy paint jobs. I like cautioning them about a sow with cubs or about quicksand (I know... it's soil in a quick condition). But, I find the best deterrent to be, "Yup. Just after the third alder swale... the long one... ya might wanna walk it first... how long is that cable on yer winch?" Now, if they are on foot, like me, I give them all the help I can. And, I definitely tell them about the boars. |
Subject: RE: BS: Geocaching From: Raptor Date: 22 Apr 06 - 04:01 PM I'm just learning about it. They give you coordinates on a website along with a hint as to where to find the cache, You find them on a map or with your GPS,go to the location, try not to be seen by anyone who might steal or disrupt the cache( These people are refured to as Muggles), Inside the cache you'll find a pencil and Paper as well as a bunch of trinkets. You are to sign the paper as proof that youve been there and you may take a trinket as long as you leave one.The Caches are hidden and in watertight containers. I went out today and I found 3 of them. It's actually fun. Like hide and seek for old people. Raptor |
Subject: RE: BS: Geocaching From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 22 Apr 06 - 06:40 PM Seems related to the older techie sport of finding spots by means of radio locator beacons. |
Subject: RE: BS: Geocaching From: Sorcha Date: 22 Apr 06 - 07:00 PM Modern treasure hunting...my friend Joe does it in Ireland |
Subject: RE: BS: Geocaching From: JohnInKansas Date: 22 Apr 06 - 08:41 PM Robin - I didn't think even you were old enough to remember skunk hunts. John |
Subject: RE: BS: Geocaching From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 22 Apr 06 - 08:53 PM Never did one, but know about them. :-) Been a ham (theatre, radio, haha!) for ages. |
Subject: RE: BS: Geocaching From: GUEST Date: 23 Apr 06 - 09:34 AM It's a lot of fun. |
Subject: RE: BS: Geocaching From: rainbow_girl Date: 23 Apr 06 - 10:45 AM http://www.geocaching.com/ I saw this on the news last week. Sounds like fun - although they suggest you have a GPS thingy. Im sure you could work it out with a good old fashioned map though. I think it would make walking so much more fun if you found some treasure at the end - or maybe thats just me! |
Subject: RE: BS: Geocaching From: goodbar Date: 23 Apr 06 - 06:38 PM there was an article in the school paper a while ago. it looked really lame and stupid for kids that don't ever swear and have no friends.... so me and two of my friends decided to do it. it was mostly an excuse to hang out. we tried going to three that were all 'easy' to find but couldn't get any. we think it's 'cause our GPS was broken and/or a POS. so we never found any prize and never got to leave our porn clippings behind. |
Subject: RE: BS: Geocaching From: Raptor Date: 20 Jan 08 - 03:18 PM Anyone tried this yet? I've been at it for a while now and love it. It's a great way to get out and explore. Raptor |
Subject: RE: BS: Geocaching From: LilyFestre Date: 20 Jan 08 - 04:48 PM I think it sounds like fun too...but for warmer weather, I'll be waiting until the spring mud dries up! |

Subject: RE: BS: Geocaching From: ranger1 Date: 21 Jan 08 - 02:58 PM Geocaching and Letterboxing both seem to be kind of neat pastimes. My issue is people who place them in the park I work at without asking permission first. We do allow them, but we have guidelines that must be met for the protection of the park. Too many people walking off-trail in the same spot create erosion problems. When we come across caches or boxes that have been placed without permission, we remove them and attempt to contact the placer. Most of the placers never bother to get back in touch with us, unfortunately. |
Subject: RE: BS: Geocaching From: vectis Date: 21 Jan 08 - 06:40 PM I have just cached my way round New Zealand with my son and reluctant husband sulking behind us. We were led to some truly beautiful spots we would not have found otherwise. It's a good fun hobby that just might get me fit again. I hate micro, nano and pico (too bloody small) caches though. |
Subject: RE: BS: Geocaching From: GUEST,.gargoyle Date: 21 Jan 08 - 10:52 PM Yes, done it. Do it.
Consider it "Idiot's Orienteering" but it is still fun.
Sincerely, |
