Subject: RE: Tech: sore guitar fingers , what do you do ? From: Skivee Date: 10 May 08 - 10:21 PM It could be that your playing has worked a few germs into the boundery between the edge of the nail and the skin. This is a fairly comman occurance for me. It happens two or three times a year. I'd suggest carefully squeezing along the nail line to see if a bit of pus comes out, then working some rubbing alcohol into the side of the nail. If it doesn't clear up in a couple of days, or gets worse see your doctor. |
Subject: RE: Tech: sore guitar fingers , what do you do ? From: Big Al Whittle Date: 11 May 08 - 01:18 AM could be a wicklow. get some permanganate of potash from the chemist. use an old cup, because this stuff leaves a brown stain. put a quarter of teaspoon full of the potash in the cup. Fill the cup with hot water (boiling, but wait for it to cool down a little). The liquid should be purple. Immerse the sore finger tip for as long as you can stand. Your finger will be stained brown. Repeat when you can face the idea. Usually by the the third time you do this, just by pressing the fingernail, a pearl of white pus will come out. the next day you finger will not hurt - although it will still be brown for a few days. |

From: lady penelope Date: 11 May 08 - 03:21 PM "get some permanganate of potash from the chemist. use an old cup, because this stuff leaves a brown stain." Other name for this is Potassium Permanginate. But yup, go get a professional to check it out and then see what you can do with it. |
Subject: RE: Tech: sore guitar fingers , what do you do ? From: Skivee Date: 11 May 08 - 03:57 PM Potassium Permanginate. If you DO go this route, be sure not to use any other products containing glycerine. You REALLY won't like the reaction. I recommended Isopropal alcohol because it's a safe, low cost, and effective antiseptic. If the infection is minor then most of what has been recommended will work just fine. I think that we might assume that Scarpi's finger is not bloating up to the size of a knockwurst. Even if he does nothing, then his body's immune system will take care of things. He is describing something requiring the same caution that you would give to a boil. Antiseptics will just speed the healing along. |

Subject: RE: Tech: sore guitar fingers , what do you do ? From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 12 May 08 - 10:14 AM Sometimes I get a hangnail (small piece of loose skin next to the nail) which is surprisingly painful. There's no redness or other sign of infection, yet if I put a little antibiotic ointment on it for a day, it is soon fine. (I can buy antibiotic ointment at the drugstore without a prescription.) I forgot - first I trim the hangnail off with manicure scissors. Then I apply the ointment. Sometimes I put on the ointment, then put a bandage over it to keep the ointment in place. It depends on what I will be doing that day. This self-treatment is for a little problem which is obviously not serious. |

Subject: RE: Tech: sore guitar fingers , what do you do ? From: JohnInKansas Date: 08 Jun 11 - 09:34 PM My Norton shows a "site reputation unknown" for M3 Products LLc in search results for "gorilla tips," and the search results include lots of "junk responses" related to FaceBook links. The "Gorilla Tips" name is apparently used by a number of "questionable" sites, but possibly by an equal number of legitimate ones, although the "cure" appears to be a rare usage. Note that Norton doesn't report "detected malware" for the site, but has no record of people using Norton AV who have "successfully visited" the site. A good salesman would not post blatant advertising based on the complaint of someone whose finger may have fallen off three years ago, but since GUEST James apparently came here only to post his commercial blather we might presume he wouldn't know (or care?) about Skarpi's finger. We would, of course, be interested in hearing from Skarpi about whether he figured out where he had put his finger to produce the problem - and whether he intends to stick it there again. (Surely he wasn't trying to plug one of those eruptions?) John |
