Urgent news report recommends you do NOT GO TO SAMOA THIS FRIDAY, as it won't be there.

(That's Friday that will be missing, not Samoa.)

No word on whether those whose rent comes due at the "end of the month" will be allowed to skip a month.

Full story:

No Friday in Samoa this week

John

Good day not to drink or smoke pot if you live there. If that happened here I'd be screwed up for weeks. Hell, alls we do is change the clock by an hour and I'm still trying to get over that. Phew. And so much for the rhyme to remember how many days in a month.

John, you find the greatest things on the internet. Thank you.

There was a Beatles parody about something like this

Yesterday
Could have sworn that it was Wednesday
But as today is Saturday
Yesterday must have been Friday

Where did Thursday go?
I don't know, I couldn't say
I took something wrong
And today is Saturday.

Samoa seems to be a forward-thinking nation.

From The Telegraph:
Some of the island's 7000-odd Seventh Day Adventist members have said they will not recognise the change and will continue to observe the existing seven-day cycle. "God will not recognise our manmade right to drop a day from the calendar, thus changing the weekly cycle," said a local Adventist, Noeline Cutts, who noted that Sunday-keeping Christians will henceforth "unknowingly" be celebrating Sabbath on Saturdays.

They seem to be ignoring the fact that this just changes things back to how they were 119 years ago!

I can just imagine it, at the Rugby World cup, 20 years from now.
Samoa field a team which include twin brothers born 20 minutes apart, one born on 29th December, and one on 31st!

This trivia will make its way into quizzes for the next couple of years!

Don't go to Samoa Friday morning (pronounced 'moaning')
In fact don't go anytime soon.
The islands are due for re-zoning
They're twinning them with Brigadoon

   Bring back, our time zone,
Oh bring back our time zone, please do, please do.
We've had the wrong time zone
   Since July 1892

They'll drink Thursday night in Samoa.
Raise glasses to cheer, and slake thirst.
They'll drink from the Thursday night o'er
Into Saturday 31st.

   Bring back, our time zone,
Oh bring back our time zone, please do, please do.
We've had the wrong time zone
   Since July 1892

Nigel, if they drink on Thursday and wake up on Saturday, does this mean that no one will have a hangover from waking up blasted on Friday?

Certainly no-one will wake up 'blasted' on Friday this week in Samoa.

No hangovers. Why isn't this good news being trumpeted by the media?

The switch is a change to the western side of the date line so that their calendar matches Australia-New Zealand, their main trading partners.

But there also is American Samoa- will they follow their neighbors in the independent (former British, formerly Western) Samoa?

Will the Americans wage war over the question? Where is George Bush when he is needed?

Evidently employees will be paid full time for the "missing Friday." This is a great idea. How about expanding it so that Monday through Friday are eliminated as well?

Nigel, excellent composing.

Saturday has dawned in NZ and so presumably in Samoa. Welcome to our world! And in another few hours (about 14 and 1/2 by my reckoning) it'll be next year!

So let me see if I have this straight, tomorrow is generally today in Somoa but yesterday was Thursday there. So since there wasn't a Friday in Somoa it must be Saturday there already.

That calls for another Thank God It's Friday cooler.

American Samoa will not change time zones, and citizens will have to do the Saturday shopping as usual.
To most Americans, American Samoa is known as a source of linemen for the NFL football clubs.

Till now the date line has been defined so that it always passed though the ocean. Now it will be possible to stand with one leg in Monday and the other in Tuesday.

This should be a tourist goldmine for anyone with a house on the border between the two Samoas.

McGrath, 50 km of water to straddle between the closest islands of the two Samoas.

McGrath-

If you try to stand on the border between American Somoa and Somoa you'll get very wet, unless you're on a boat.

Cheerily,

Well done, John, finger on the pulse of history. It took a further 24 hours before it was news in NZ.

Perhaps that is why Samoa wants to do more trade with us.

There was no threat that Samoa wouldn't be there. Only that Friday wouldn't be there in Samoa.

The Friday was probably removed because it was an extra left over when they took out a couple of weeks about a century ago and had to celebrate the Fourth of July twice in the same year.

But two Fourths of July probably didn't fully compensate for the Dutch removal of the last week or so of December quite a while farther back, resulting in there being no Christmas for the kiddies that year in Holland.

Since the kiddies in both cases are probably grown up by now, a couple of fifths of something would perhaps have been applied sometime during intervening centuries, but there's nothing in the historical record to indicate how people survived either confusion.

John
