I saw an earlier thread on this, but the links are old and out of date. I have completed a collection of folk tales from the north east of England and I might have a bite from a publisher. I'd like to have at least one illustration for each of them -- can anyone draw?

You can take a peek at a sample of the tales and my own attempts at illustration by clicking here

BPL, I believe that Mudcatter Fred Miller is a 'portraitist'.   Maybe he'll come along, or you could try PMing him.

Hi Big Pink Lad

what a great collection of stories.

Publishers usually like to find their own artists. Mudcatter Alice is also a beautiful artist and illustrator. If you look up her profile, you'll find a link to her website. I worked in the 80s as an illustrator, characaturist and cartoonist but am in a different field now.

I hope your work gets published, good luck!

freda

There have been numerous threads on producing books, and on getting them published. One I particularly enjoyed is at The Writers Life, although for some reason it's tagged with "This Thread is Closed." (Anyone know why?) Some other threads have dealt more directly with the specific mechanics of submitting for publication, but I don't have one handy.

The illustrations at your site look quite nice to me, and perfectly appropriate to the tales. (I didn't look at all of them.) As was mentioned, publishers often prefer to get their own artists; but this does vary. If you have contact with a publisher who's interested it would be well to check with them on whether they want you to submit art work before doing a lot of preparation. (You may have already done this?)

John

When I was a kid, I used to draw my own comic strips, and my ambition at the age of twelve or thirteen was to become another Milton Caniff (Terry and the Pirates, Steve Canyon) or Hal Foster (Prince Valiant). I got pretty good, actually, but other things kind of intruded the way they do. I worked for some time as a production illustrator for little Billy Boeing's kite factory (the 727-200 number 2 engine firewall is mine). I still draw and sketch from time to time, but usually just irreverent cartoons.

Now, mostly, I draw flies. . . .

"This Thread is Closed." (Anyone know why?)

I remember seeing a post from Joe Offer where he said that the system now automatically closes non-music threads after they have gone a year with no new posts. Ya can still read 'em, ya just can't post to 'em. But Joe also said that if there's a compelling reason to have a closed thread reopened, just send him or Jeff a PM and they can do it.

I like your illustrations a lot, TheBigPinkLad. Why don't you do the rest of them yourself?

Well done, BPL!! Love the stories and the illustrations, as well as the Sayings and Rhymes. Thanks!

JinK, all BS thread automatically close after a certain of time, but as noted, can be reopened. Thanks for all of the info in all of those book threads you posted over the years.:-) (I've refreshed it.)

BPL,

Publishers match up their own choice of illustrator with manuscripts from writers. Sell your manuscript and the publisher will handle who illustrates it. Alternatively, submit the manuscript with YOUR own illustrations and they might publish them together. Sometimes that is easier for the publisher because they don't have to deal with contracts with two people - just one person (writer/illustrator).

Alice

I can draw water from a well, draw a bath, draw the short end of the stick, and even draw a losing lottery ticket. When I try to draw stick people no one recognizes what I've drawn.

I can draw moose. I've got this yell worked out that attracts them from many miles away. It's really quite interesting.

If you get published, let us know, we're a proud lot around Mudcatville.

Um...I doodle, sometimes too much.

I once had a desk job which took me to hearings and tribunals and such where my notes were often riddled with strange and bizarre characters peaking out from around my handwriting. Cartoons, sometimes ridiculing the scene. It used to drive the office clerical person crazy. I was once asked to hand my notes to a labour arbitrator who was not amused at my ungenerous portrayal of the proceedings.

Truth is, I don't draw well at all, just goof off.

One of my older sisters could really draw. Back in the late 60s when she was teaching herself folksongs on the guitar, she wrote out scores of lyric sheets for stuff ranging from traditional to Joni Mitchell. When she gave it up she gave all her songs to me when I started playing. Our tastes were very different, but I kept her work and I'm glad I did. Cancer took her life, but I've got her songs, many with brilliant little vignettes in the margins. She also wrote and illustrated a short children's storybook for our little sister, designed stuff (including some guitar inlays for me), restored church paintings, and made greeting cards and such.

I can draw a bow and used to regularly compete in archery club shoots. We used to draw our drinking water straight from the lake. I draw the curtains because the neighbour lady has no life other than snooping on the weirdos next door.

Wish I could...sigh.

Peace, Mooh.
