I must be missing the forum where the musicians here can be heard playing but it would be great if some of you played a few licks into your computer mics right here so we can hear you.

I did this this morning with that free audacity program and just overlapped the same track with the ol copy and paste.

I read about Audacity in Computer Active. I was waiting to hear if anyone had tried it before downloading.
Is it suitable for a beginner??

Kevin - it all depends on what he's playing with !   

When I was young, I was told that it would make me go blind - but I rationalised that I could keep on doing it until I had to wear glasses. These days I need reading glasses so it must have been the magazines that I was looking at !

audacity is like a regular tape recorder - 3 buttons play stop record
but you also have a sliding select bar, and the ability to cut and paste.

I am a pre beginner and got it to record fine the first time.

*Getting the free download "add on" to export in MP3 saves alot of memory space.

Audacity is quite nice--'beginner' is not a real problem if one is sensible and reads and thinks. You need to have some idea of exactly what you want to do before choosing the program to do it. There are LOTS of audio programs...some free.

Audacity,JetAudio, dbPowerAmp, Silent Bob, and more....do you want to play music files, record?, edit?....if you want to do everything, you will no doubt want more than one program. It just takes some time to learn the procedures, like creating & editing graphics...(which Donuel has down pat! *grin*...if he gets good at music programming, we'll be taking lessons!)

Bill it took me about 3 years to learn digital graphics.
Today I got a Korg triton pro workstation sampler.


and a 450 PAGE user manual.

I'll get back to you in about 3 years with the music programing thing.

LOL...yep! (and they will CHANGE it about as fast as you learn it!) (just been looking deeper in the Audicity help file, as my wife wants to do some recording and editing, and we have 3-4 programs that will do it to different degrees....I am supposed to advise her..)

The 2.1 operating system it came with, is now obsolete to 2.5

Donuel, is that really you, playing the cello, live? If so, WOW dude! Such dynamic expressiveness, and that impeccable intonation!

Not to mention those high-tech computer skills ...

I'd LOVE to improvise a little harmony on the keyboard or guitar, maybe even a counter-melody on viola! I'd probably need about a decade to figure out the tech end of things though   *sigh* ... and I'd like to get my viola bow "re-haired" too. Unfortunately, viola bow doctors are a little hard to come by in these parts.

Anyway, thanks .... I really enjoyed your recording!

I thought it sounded like a viola played in lower registers...which is it Donuel? It is very nice, and not something an autoharpist could easily add to...

I play cello better than fiddle.

Technology???? I just let a video cam pick up the cello then I played it on the stereo so the computer mic would pick it up.
Then I overlapped it with audacity.

Here is similar "technolgy" of me improvising Debussy on auto harp and cello.

I recorded the harp in the bathtub and then played cello on the edge of the bed while the harp played on the stereo.

felt picks used to be a standard item you got with a new autoharp...it's been years since I saw one.

(gee, I've heard of 'washtub bass', but 'bathtub harp' is a new one.. :>) too bad it would be so hard to take onstage!)
