Subject: BS: God and The Queen From: Rapparee Date: 25 Jan 07 - 03:25 PM "(Bleep) save our Gracious Queen...." From the Associated Press: So much for God and country, at least during some in-flight showings of the Oscar-nominated movie "The Queen." All mentions of God are bleeped out of a version of the film distributed to Delta and some other airlines. Jeff Klein, president of Jaguar Distribution, the Studio City, Calif., company that supplied the movie to the airlines earlier this month, said it was a mistake, committed by an overzealous and inexperienced employee who had been told to edit out all profanities and blasphemies. "A reference to God is not taboo in any culture that I know of," Klein said. "We excise foul language, excessive violence and nudity." |

Subject: RE: BS: God and The Queen From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 25 Jan 07 - 08:22 PM "overzealous and inexperienced" - and inadequately supervised. No excuse whatsoever. What sensible airline would have anything to do with such an incompetant organisation? |

Subject: RE: BS: God and The Queen From: JohnInKansas Date: 25 Jan 07 - 09:09 PM "A reference to God is not taboo in any culture that I know of," Actually it is. Several religions have "the-real-name-of-god-that-is-never-spoken-or-written" with an accompanying set of "euphemisms" that are traditionally used, unless I've been misled by the looney toones sectsists who've told me that. In most cases, I've found that none of the speakers knew what the "blasphemous" name was, since nobody ever told them, but ... ... John |
Subject: RE: BS: God and The Queen From: Rapparee Date: 25 Jan 07 - 09:16 PM I can't resist: (Bleep) save our gracious Queen Long live our noble Queen, (Bleep) save the Queen: Send her victorious, Happy and glorious, Long to reign over us: (Bleep) save the Queen. O (bleep), our (bleep), arise, Scatter thine enemies, And make them fall: Confound their politics, Frustrate their knavish tricks, On thee our hopes we fix: (Bleep) save us all. Thy choicest gifts in store, On her be pleased to pour; Long may she reign: May she defend our laws, And ever give us cause To sing with heart and voice (Bleep) save the Queen. You'll notice I didn't use that version with the Scots in it. |

Subject: RE: BS: God and The Queen From: Liz the Squeak Date: 26 Jan 07 - 08:52 PM Here's what Waki wiki gives... 4 Not in this land alone, But be God's mercies known, From shore to shore! Lord make the nations see, That men should brothers be, And form one family, The wide world o'er. 5 From every latent foe, From the assassins blow, God save the Queen! O'er her thine arm extend, For Britain's sake defend, Our mother, prince, and friend, God save the Queen! 6 Lord grant that Marshal Wade May by thy mighty aid Victory bring. May he sedition hush, And like a torrent rush, Rebellious Scots to crush. God save the Queen! Verse 6 was a reaction to Sir John Cope's defeat by the Jacobites at the Battle of Prestonpans with a prayer for the success of Wade's army then assembling at Newcastle. The Jacobite forces bypassed his force and reached Derby, but then retreated and when their garrison at Carlisle surrendered to a second government army led by King George's son the Duke of Cumberland another verse was added, according to Fitzroy Maclean:[4] The verse he quotes appears to have a line missing. 7 George is magnanimous, Subjects unanimous; Peace to us bring: His fame is glorious, Reign meritorious, God save the King! Another verse added during the 1745 Rising and sung at theatres, went as follows:[2][3] 8 From France and Pretender Great Britain defend her, Foes let them fall; From foreign slavery, Priests and their knavery, And Popish Reverie, God save us all. |

Subject: RE: BS: God and The Queen From: John MacKenzie Date: 27 Jan 07 - 06:07 AM The title of the film 'The Madness of King George III', was changed for American audiences to, 'The Madness of King George'. Subject: RE: BS: God and The Queen From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 27 Jan 07 - 06:45 AM George is magnanimous, Subjects unanimous; Peace to us bring: His fame is glorious, Reign meritorious, God save the King! That actually sounds like it might have been knocked up by a Jacobite. With the full verse perhaps being something like George is magnanimous, Subjects unanimous; Peace to us bring: His fame is glorious, Reign meritorious, Highly precarious - God save the King! |
