I know this has been mentioned before but do you listen to and enjoy Internet Radio?

I do. I have an inexpensive subwoofer system and I replaced the cruddy 3" desktop speakers with my old Lafayette Criterion 3 way Hifi speakers, the old fashioned kind 12" d x 14" wide x 24" high that do not take a lot of power to drive.

It sounds great and creates a pleasant atmosphere for doing computer "work".

While on the computer I fire up an extra browser and tune into AOL Radio or any of the hundreds of other stations on the net and it streams in in the background while I do other things.

If you don't like that one or if the link don't work, just go to http://music.aol.com/radioguide/bb and click on Decades on the left then Super 70's at the bottom or whatever genre you like

Sawzaw--I sometimes listen to OTR dramas and westerns, or western music on radio365. Since I'm not listening diligently, I use a set of tinny speakers with a sub woofer (LOL) to moderate the thinness of the speakers. It works well for me.

It is really excellent if you like browsing, but last time I looked it didn't sort by categories very well.

I have used Screamer, and this is similar, but better. What I would do is collect stations I like from other sources and load them into Tapin's list and 'favorites'. I think it is worth the effort.

I listen to several stations created for me, based on genre, artist or song name at Pandora.com the music genome project. I still love Hober Radio.

I also listen to bricks and mortar stations, online, including our local community station, KAFM and another one up the road, KVNF, plus on Saturday nights, I try to remember to tune into Max (owner of the Mudcat) on WPSU and also Colorado Public Radio for NPR news programs, mostly.

Sometimes, I listen to 365, but not nearly as often as those above.

Yes, I stream all of those leftist liberal intellectual National Public Radio programs from the original station if my station is interrupting with pledge breaks. I am a "sustaining" member, meaning I give the same amount every month. So I skip the local breaks and get the entire program.

People are unaware that you can power the old fashioned HIFI speakers with just a few watts and they sound great. They are ported instead of sealed like the newer ones in order to shrink them down to bookshelf size.

The old ones are sitting around gathering dust in peoples garages etc.

Yeah I listen to NPR in my truck and surprisingly they don't cut a lot of slack for anybody. I like that.

And I watch Aljazeera TV which is more fair and balanced than MSNBC and Fox.

But why does something about music have to turn political?

Instead of listening on our computer, we bought an internet radio. Actually it is sort of computer but it looks like a radio. Connects to our wireless network and gives us access to any station that broadcasts on the net.

It sits on our nightstand and we listen to old time radio at night on this station. This station runs old radio programs 24/7 with no commercials except the old ones built into the programs.

Also, it allows us access to several npr stations so we can tune to another during pledge drives and when they play jazz or classical music.

This was a real blessing for us because we live in "radio hell".

Used to listen to some US based folk station, but I just couldn't take any more C&W. Don't know about anybody else, but I don't put C&W in the same category as folk!

There's a great internet radio station in Lousiana - Lafayette, I think, that streams great Cajun and Zydeco - wheee! Can't recall the name now, but it plays some really down-home stuff.

lots of good stuff on the internet radio ... yup got my subwoofer and system setup and listen all the time - Folk , hillybilly and everything else.

A few years back I got a Dell set-up which included a sound system, with a large box woofer and 4 small speakers. I have replaced the computer itself a couple of times, but the sound is excellent on these speakers.

In my bedroom I have a compact Sony with CD, casette and radio. I have it hitched to two large old JVC speakers from a thrift store ($10). Much better than the two mini-speakers that came with the compact system.
I will have to look at an internet tuner or radio.

I gave two other large speakers to the owner of the neighborhood garage where I get service and gas for my car. He put them in the repair bay area.
A few years back, older speakers, hifi equipment including amplifiers and tuners were common in the local thrift stores. I still have two more good older speakers, a good amplifier with tuner (just cleaned and serviced), and an extra turntable. My daughter will get those and add a cd player.

A great station on the net is tradcan.be, which streams traditional music from France, Italy, Scandanavia, Ireland, Scotland, US, Eastern Europe, etc. It comes out of Belgium, from the Canard Folk organization.

One of my Amish friends wrote me and told me that Pandora, which I told him about some time ago, had gotten impossible to listen too because they wanted money.

He found a new WAMU, American University, station playing their Genre at http://216.246.12.142/WAMU-2?MSWMExt=.asf

They are New Order Amish and the whole family plays what they call old timey music.

I have stopped listening to internet radio since the greed of the US publishers closed down my favourites a few years ago. They forced a huge rise in payments, backdated to the previous January. As fifty per cent of these royalties went directly to the publishers and the other fifty per cent (under most existing contracts) is effectively an interest free loan for them for between twelve and twenty-four months, it is not hard to see why they wanted this. The other side effect of this, was not unwelcome to the major record companies. They invest a lot of money on keeping access to the media as a pretty exclusive club. They had every reason to resent the access of internet play to independent, non label artists. It was a good year for the bullies. The age of independent radio was very short and I was very sorry to see it go.

I was talking about free internet radio too Sawzaw. Unfortunately my favourites are no longer able to operate, because of the money extorted from them (ostensibly on my behalf!) by music publishers.
