Also I would like to know the title of two other Irish folk songs the first lines of which are:- 1)Dublin can be heaven with coffee at eleven...... 2)Lonely I wandered through scenes of my childhood Thanks PA |
Subject: Lyr Add: THE OLD HOUSE (from Foster & Allen) From: Amergin Date: 26 Feb 01 - 06:15 PM Is this one of them?
THE OLD HOUSE
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lonely, I wandered through scenes of my childhood
Here's where the children played games on the heather
Lonely, the house now, and lonely, the moorland |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Auld Triangle From: MartinRyan Date: 26 Feb 01 - 06:40 PM Well found, 'Spaw! It's known as "The Dublin Saunter". Regards |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Auld Triangle From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 26 Feb 01 - 07:10 PM You know, something that had never occurred to me in years of singing until recently, is that The Ould Triangle is to the tune of The Galway Shawl. I suppose they are filed in different parts of my brain. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Auld Triangle From: catspaw49 Date: 26 Feb 01 - 07:37 PM Mac, I am so glad you admitted to one!!! I have that happen every now and again and on one tune, it was YEARS before it dawned on me!!!! Nice to have some company. Spaw |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Auld Triangle From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 27 Feb 01 - 08:19 AM The only problem is that you could have a whole bunch of songs with the same tune, and sing them one after another without realising it. Embarrassing. (A bit like the time someone asked for a suggestion for the next song she should sing, and I asked for the one she'd just finished singing...) |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Auld Triangle From: GUEST,Fibula Mattock Date: 27 Feb 01 - 08:22 AM Gah! McGrath! Spaw! I never even noticed that before! I hang my head in shame. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Auld Triangle From: Big Tim Date: 27 Feb 01 - 10:48 AM The Auld Triangle used to the the name of the Pogues fan club, "the old triangle went jingle bloody jangle!" (Shane MacGowan). Of course it was written by Brendan Behan, a hero of Shane's for literary and alcoholic reasons. Dario and Ingrid if you're out there, still got the newsletters! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Auld Triangle From: catspaw49 Date: 27 Feb 01 - 11:12 AM Thnks for posting Fib........I was afraid it was an age thing........................... Spaw |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Auld Triangle From: GUEST,Fibula Mattock Date: 27 Feb 01 - 11:31 AM Nah, definitely not old age Spaw - but I don't have a good excuse for it. Next I'll find out that "the Star of the County Down" is sung to "The Star of the County Down" or something equally obvious. I despair. Ten "Mary Had a Little Lamb"s and a decade of the "Rose of Tralee" as penance. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Auld Triangle From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 07 Jul 02 - 06:41 AM Is bowsey a real term of abuse? I sometimes sing bastard. Behan might have meant bastard but the word was too strong for the times? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Auld Triangle From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 07 Jul 02 - 09:38 AM Moreton Bay also goes to to the same tune, and I sing all three. The version I do has these lines, And Captain Logan, he had us mangled, At the old triangles of Moreton Bay. Keith. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Auld Triangle From: dick greenhaus Date: 07 Jul 02 - 01:34 PM Someone pointed out that once you've heard one Irish tune, you've heard them both. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Auld Triangle From: Shonagh Date: 07 Jul 02 - 03:10 PM well, it took me years to figure out that the ABC song is sung to the same tune as twinkle twinkle little star! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Auld Triangle From: Paddy Plastique Date: 08 Jul 02 - 04:47 AM 'Bowsie' - term of abuse ?? I'd take it as a compliment - especially from a prison warder. Seriously - I suppose it'd be the equivalent of 'lout' or some similar word. Often coupled with the phrase 'good-for-nothing'. An Irish/Dublin synonym would be 'gouger'. I've also known country relatives to use the almost quaint 'blackguard' (pron. blagard). 'bowsie' would be less shocking than 'bastard' probably only because it's less well known. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Auld Triangle From: Paddy Plastique Date: 08 Jul 02 - 04:49 AM Funnily enough, I've also seen the word(s) 'Auld Triangler' used as a term of abuse in an article about a famous Dublin singing club - bleddy purists... |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Auld Triangle From: boglion Date: 09 Jul 02 - 07:17 PM I sing the Dubs version of this as an opener when I'm in Ireland. I was once in a discussion about it's authorship with a very knowledgable Welsh friend - He said Dominic, I said Brendan....Until another friend suggested it was written by their two lesser known brothers, Gay and Les....... |
Subject: Auld Triangle From: GUEST,jimlad Date: 05 Sep 02 - 02:49 PM In the Irish song Auld Triangle, what is the Auld Triangle?. |
Subject: RE: Auld Triangle From: GUEST,Glade Date: 05 Sep 02 - 03:30 PM I've always heard that it used to wake prisoners, call meal times, etc. Just a triangle-shaped piece of metal that was banged on. Glade |
Subject: RE: Auld Triangle From: GUEST,Glade Date: 05 Sep 02 - 03:36 PM I just looked thru the threads and there's been some interesting discussion of the song. Also look under 'Ould Triangle.' Glade |
Subject: RE: Auld Triangle From: Janice in NJ Date: 05 Sep 02 - 10:04 PM In the female prison there are seventy-five women, And it's there among them that I'd like to dwell, Then my old triangle would go "jingle jangle!" Along the banks of the Royal Canal. Does Brendan have to draw you a picture? :-) |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Auld Triangle From: it'smagic Date: 27 Jul 12 - 07:00 PM Isn't the Auld Triangle a Scottish variant? |
