Subject: RE: Help: Does Mudcat have a chat room? From: mousethief Date: 16 Apr 01 - 02:11 PM Unfortunately I'm here at work, and while passive java works okay, interactive java -- like that used in chat rooms or online game sites -- is completely hosed by the firewall. Sigh. Alex |

Subject: RE: Help: Does Mudcat have a chat room? From: mousethief Date: 16 Apr 01 - 03:16 PM Just a little in the late evening. Most of my mudcatting is done from work, while my long mainframe programs are running (and usually crashing) and I have nothing better to do. Alex |

Subject: RE: Help: Does Mudcat have a chat room? From: Mrrzy Date: 16 Apr 01 - 03:59 PM We have bulletin-board style most of the time, like here, BUT you can get a lot closer to a "chat room" if you attend the Paltalk/HearMe's, or whatever they are now. BTW, are those still around? I haven't been able to get to one in donkey's years... |
|
Subject: RE: Help: Does Mudcat have a chat room? From: katlaughing Date: 16 Apr 01 - 05:02 PM HearMe is defunct. We still have several PalTalk rooms, the Mudcat Concert Room, the Mudcat Song Cirle, Mudcat Snug, and Jon Freeman has his own, I think it is called Squiggle's. Mudcat has an ICQ chat which Max activates when the radio show is on. You have to have the latest update of ICQ and have joined the list before the next show and chat is up, or it won't let you in. Once you are invited in and accepted, it works pretty well. |

Subject: RE: Help: Does Mudcat have a chat room? From: Jon Freeman Date: 16 Apr 01 - 05:22 PM There is currently no Mudcat Song Circle, it was the name that I used for the first Paltalk gathering but I have re named my room and pulled out of Mudcat events. Anyone else could start a room with that name if they wished to. When I started the Folkchat ICQ Active List, I did tried to keep the server running as much as possible but the room was never used outside Mudcat Radio (which is the only time it has opened since Max kindly took it over). Before that, there was the Java based Mudcat Prototype Chat but that seemed to fizzle out and rarely had anyone there. I might be wrong (and am perhaps basing this in part on my own inclinations) but it has been my impression that, with the exception of events where something happens like the singing, or the radio, the people here who use chat programs are perhaps more inclinded to have small, perhaps one to one chats than join in a general Mudcatter's chat. Subject: RE: Help: Does Mudcat have a chat room? From: Liz the Squeak Date: 16 Apr 01 - 05:32 PM That's true,Jon. There have been stern messages and virtual frowns when people use the Mudcat Snug room to chat during a snug session, when someone is singing..... claims that having a conversation on the screen puts people off.... People tend to use the personal screens instead now, which is a shame because it means you can sometimes be hopping between 2 or 3 conversations at once.... thus not concentrating on any of the music, which is why we were here in the first place. I thought the snug was the less formal and that if it was a serious singaround it was under the title of song circle. The concerts remain fairly unhindered by chat, although it can get a bit rowdy before the main act starts..... LTS |

Subject: RE: Help: Does Mudcat have a chat room? From: Jon Freeman Date: 16 Apr 01 - 08:03 PM Liz, although the feel of the rooms may have been different, I can't remember the degree of formality being an issue. I don't know what, if any, guidelines Nynia has for the Snug but it would be fair to say that the Song Circle (and my current room) was not really a room for chat in as much as it was open and the emphasis was on trying to have someone performing on the mic as much as possible. In my experience with the rooms I use, the singers there rarely seem bothered by a lot of text (some rooms have 30+ people in at times and a fair amount of comings and goings so just applause, hello's and goodbyes can create a fair flow of text). That is of course not to suggest that some people in the Snug may not find the text distracting. Jon |

Subject: RE: Help: Does Mudcat have a chat room? From: Jon Freeman Date: 16 Apr 01 - 08:20 PM I mean't to add this before: You don't need the latest version of ICQ for the Mudcat Radio chat. ICQ 99b works fine and personally, I would advise upgrading to anything later. Jon |
|
Subject: RE: Help: Does Mudcat have a chat room? From: Jon Freeman Date: 16 Apr 01 - 09:19 PM Opps, I made a mistake in my previous post. I would advise AGAINST upgrading to ICQ versions later than 99b as the programs are more bulky and add little in the way of useful features. Jon |

Subject: RE: Help: Does Mudcat have a chat room? From: Mark Cohen Date: 16 Apr 01 - 10:59 PM I enjoy the "chat" portion of the Mudcat song circles, whatever they're called. When I'm singing, I just don't look at the screen, so I'm not bothered or offended at all by ongoing conversation. I used to attend the Seattle Song Circle all the time when I lived there, and I miss that kind of interaction, so for me it's a plus. But, chacun a son goulash. Aloha, Mark |

Subject: RE: Help: Does Mudcat have a chat room? From: alison Date: 16 Apr 01 - 11:45 PM and I have a room at Paltalk called "Celtic Friends"... despite the name it is not just for Celtic music... any folk... live or recorded is welcome.. so if you want to plug your CDs by playing tracks.. come on in.... slainte alison |

Subject: RE: Help: Does Mudcat have a chat room? From: katlaughing Date: 17 Apr 01 - 12:56 AM Sorry, Alison, forgot to list yours. I've really enjoyed it the couple of times I've been in there. Liz, I haven't been in the Snug for a week or two, but I was told it was supposed to be more laid back, with tolerance for chatting. When did it change? It's too bad. The chatting has never bothered me when singing except to make me laugh a time or two. |

Subject: RE: Help: Does Mudcat have a chat room? From: Jon Freeman Date: 17 Apr 01 - 01:27 AM I guess I'd better qualify what I said before about the Song Circle (and my current room) and chatting. The aim was to keep music going in the room and music needs the mic. I was and am very laid back towards chatting in text at any time as I enjoy it and have never complained about anything in the text other than behaviour which is offensive to other members of the group. Subject: RE: Help: Does Mudcat have a chat room? From: katlaughing Date: 17 Apr 01 - 01:35 AM Oh, thanks, Jon, that's what I meant, too, that I was speaking only of text chat, though sometimes in the Snug, if it's just been 2-3 of us, I don't mind a little audio chat, too. kat |
|
Subject: RE: Help: Does Mudcat have a chat room? From: Jon Freeman Date: 17 Apr 01 - 01:45 AM Pretty much the same with me and the audio chat kat although that is a little more difficult with the rooms I have ran than with the Snug. Let's say I'm running an open room that say's "live folk and blues" and lets say Dave, Jacko and I were having a chat. If a stranger walked in, I would feel some form of obligation to try and get the live music going. Jon |

Subject: RE: Help: Does Mudcat have a chat room? From: katlaughing Date: 17 Apr 01 - 01:52 AM Yeah, so would I, Jon. I haven't been in any rooms for at least two weeks. I am going to be away for a few days, but when I come back, I'll try to stop in sometime. |

Subject: RE: Help: Does Mudcat have a chat room? From: Clinton Hammond Date: 17 Apr 01 - 01:31 PM Well... so the answer to my question is 'no' I guess eh... Once again... do feel free to use mine if there are folks here who just want to chat... no sound, no rules, ONE moderator, all I expect is a certain level of decency... it is not an adult only place... that url again... http://members.home.net/sword4hire/Index.htm And look towards the bottom for the link to the Java chat page... Enjoy... ;-) |

Subject: RE: Help: Does Mudcat have a chat room? From: dick greenhaus Date: 18 Apr 01 - 11:54 AM Personally, I very sorry to see Mudcat Rooms (snug or open) ended. I sort of liked the idea of dropping in when I could and getting to meet Mudcatters; Maybe a sceduled room once a week or so would be possible? |

Subject: RE: Help: Does Mudcat have a chat room? From: alison Date: 18 Apr 01 - 09:07 PM did they end?........ I just reckoned with daylight savings I wasn't bumping into people at the usual times.... slainte alison |

Subject: RE: Help: Does Mudcat have a chat room? From: Jon Freeman Date: 18 Apr 01 - 09:30 PM Alison, the snug is still avaible and according to the last information I had from Nynia (which is in the FAQ together with admin details), can be opened by anyone at any time. Jon |

Subject: RE: Help: Does Mudcat have a chat room? From: alison Date: 18 Apr 01 - 09:32 PM thanks Jon.. but I tend to open my own.. then we can hear people's recordings too... I do invite any 'catters I see online at the time slainte alison |
