Subject: RE: BS: Has 'cat been down, or was it me? From: Joe Offer Date: 14 Oct 09 - 10:01 AM You can tell from today's Forum Menu that there were no messages posted from about 1:50 AM to 9:50 AM. I sent Max a text message this morning, and Mudcat was up again within five minutes. I don't know if it was MY text he responded to, but I'm glad Max fixed things. -Joe- |

Subject: RE: BS: Has 'cat been down, or was it me? From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 14 Oct 09 - 07:04 PM I had a weird message (The log file for database 'Mudcat2007' is full. Back up the transaction log for the database to free up some log space. eh, wazzat?) last night & as it referred to my computer I thought it was a problem with my system so sent it to my Personal Help Desk (who has not yet replied, fooey to him!) But maybe it was the same problem cos I had no trouble posting the saved reply to the thread when I logged in this morning. sandra |

Subject: RE: BS: Has 'cat been down, or was it me? From: Joe Offer Date: 14 Oct 09 - 11:56 PM No, it was just you, Ron.... ...or maybe it was just me. I'm still on vacation, finishing up my Getaway bottle of bourbon, and a bit giddy. -Joe- |

Subject: RE: BS: Has 'cat been down, or was it me? From: Ron Davies Date: 15 Oct 09 - 12:17 AM Hey Joe, no need to be sensitive. I said it was Joe Diffie--didn't mean to refer to any other Joe. And you ought to hear the song. Solidly in the honky-tonk tradition. It just doesn't take much for some 'Catters to link to a song--just the right meter can be enough. Guilty as charged. And the rest of us at Getaway are still on a high too I bet. We've just got to make it a week. One thing it's made me do is want to learn more songs--so I've been learning about one a day. As long as I can squeeze them into my 3 chords. Which doesn't really limit you that much. |

Subject: RE: BS: Has 'cat been down, or was it me? From: Joe Offer Date: 15 Oct 09 - 12:35 AM No sensitivity, Ron. I'm just being goofy - and perhaps the bourbon is talking a bit. It's tasty, though. But about this Joe Diffie song, can you give us a link? And about this three-chord concept of learning songs - how can you play a viola like you do and say you're limited to three-chord songs? It's always a treat to hear your viola at the Getaway. - but if you're doing what you do just by following a three-chord pattern, I want to know your secret. How can I apply it to my harmonicas? I keep thinking that I am on the verge of great musical discoveries that will turn me into a world-class musician, but the discoveries never quite come.... -Joe- |

Subject: RE: BS: Has 'cat been down, or was it me? From: Ron Davies Date: 15 Oct 09 - 07:49 AM Well actually, as you know, a huge number of folk and country songs are in fact 3 chords--there's even a great book about fairly recent country called "3 Chords and the Truth"--lots of information on Harlan Howard and others. So I can guess where a song is going and come up with a harmony even if I've never heard the song before---and in that case I definitely wait to hear a verse before trying anything. And if I guess wrong I change immediately--hoping that nobody caught it. I can always claim it was a passing tone. All I want to do with the viola is complement the melody--and not obscure the words of the singer. So I can bring the instrument line out at the end of a phrase, but in general I try to stay very much in the background--unless asked to take a break. I find one of the hardest things to play a harmony for several verses then, on a break, to try to play the melody of a song I've never heard before. At least on lots of country and folk songs, the last note is often the tonic. That helps a bit. The song I cited is called "Is It Cold In Here?", recorded by Joe Diffie about 10 years ago or so now. I'm afraid I don't know how to link to songs. By the way, Joe, your harmonica is sounding really good. I would think you could do really well in making up something to play on virtually any train song, for instance. And the harmonica adds a lot to any train song. I wish I could play the harmonica. Never been able to even get a dependable scale. The 3-chord songs I'm learning are for my wretched guitar skills--since I'd plan to sing them only in places where there will be real guitarists who can bail me out, but who may need to know the chord progression of a given song. I'm gravitating to 1950's and 1960's country these days--"Almost Persuaded", "Begging to You", "Fraulein", "Crazy Arms" .And Lots of Charlie Pride, including "The Snakes Crawl at NIght, "All I Have To Offer You Is Me", "I'm So Afraid of Losing You Again", etc. ... .... All just great fun to sing. |
