It seems most of his staff has just deserted him.   Badly timed vacation is cited as a reason. But I'll bet a nickel his checkered marital history (esp. in light of Weiner's problems) plays a substantial role.

Worst thing is that all you Mudcatters who have reservations for his fundraiser in Beverly Hills this Sunday will not be able to get your money back--the deadline for refunds has passed.

But though he is basically gone (dead meat, for sure), he will not be forgotten.

He has bequeathed the Democrats the most precious thing he could:   the phrase "right-wing social engineering".

Which may be the most important phrase of the 2012 election.

Commentary this evening on the PBS News Hour said that the trip to Greece, on top of the news about the huge tab at Tiffany's probably put a period to the patience of his staff.

Yes, I am weeping huge tears for him. Massive tears. Gigundous tears. Tears one of which would fill Bobert's pond to overflowing. And I'm certain Bobert is weeping with me.

Well, he certainly wasn't as scary as some of his Republican opponents. I'm not sure his demise is cause for rejoicing - it just makes more room for the Tea Party candidates.
There's a news story here (click).

Yeah, Joe, I wasn't sure if his leaving the scene was a positive or negative.    But you can bet that, had he stayed in, he would have been criticizing Obama as harshly as possible in a desperate attempt to get back in the good graces of the Right--including the Tea Party

His supporters will have to go somewhere, and I'd think that Pawlenty or maybe Huntsman would be the beneficiary.    Maybe Romney.

The GOP circular firing squad certainly is a thing of wonder.

Now we can hope that Nader's appeals for a candidate to the left of Obamas continue to fall on deaf ears.    And that Trumka's threats are empty rhetoric.

Another irony:    Trumka's warnings not to take unions for granted, but at the same time one of the main themes of the Right is that Obama is in the pocket of the unions (e.g. the Boeing issue).

His (imminent) departure, along with past departures of Hucklebee and Trump before him saddens me. You see, I have friends who are stand-up comedians. Gingrich's departure means that they will have to work a bit harder. Of course, there is still Sarah Palin (for what that is worth) and Michele Bachmann, both of whom graciously provide a rich treasure trove of mineable material.

The landscape is full of Republicans who have no chance of winning anything, but see clearly that there is money to be made pretending to run, or hinting they 'might'.
Palin is the most obvious, but Newt's history for the last 10 years is just hopping from one money making scheme to another.

Newt Gingrich is not suited for any higher office than he has already held.

He cannot even be considered for even the Senate because he tells people what he really believes. That doesn't work because your opposition can take you convictions and bludgeon you with them.

He also has no executive experience and has a high IQ. Yes, Gingrich has a PhD in history and is a college professor. Last prof was Woodrow Wilson, I believe.

Too smart, too honest, too short, too Southern, too frumpy, too nice, too...er...normal.

Nobody said it was a surprise--though the majority of your whole staff does not usually desert you en masse. McCain had to fire most of his at one point due to financial reasons.   But refusing as a group to follow your chosen candidate, due to your perception that he doesn't really know how to run a campaign--now, that is actual news.

Anybody who saw the "non-candidates debate" on SNL earlier this year was given a preview of this--Gingrich, offered the chance to leave before the debate started, did so.

It's of course totally impossible that there is an element of schadenfreude-- (which we really should learn how to spell, since it's such a useful word in a campaign season)-- in our perception of Mr. Gingrich's travails.

I trust the 'Newt' about as much as I trust Obama.
Gee, with a name 'Newt' you'd think we'd have a reptilian in the White House!! ..instead of our present snake!

"The Obama Depression"?

Apparently for these brain-dead idiots the 25 years prior to Pres. Obama didn't exist.

Of course, its no surprise they're trying to distance themselves from the problems THEY enthusiastically created and are still championing the things that created the problem in the first place.

--------
MANCHESTER, N.H., 13 June 2011 (AP) — Republican White House hopefuls condemned President Barack Obama's handling of the economy from the opening moments of their first major debate of the campaign season Monday night, and pledged emphatically to repeal his historic year-old health care overhaul.

"When 14 million Americans are out of work we need a new president to end the Obama Depression," declared former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, the first among seven contenders on stage to criticize the president's economic policies.

Jim McDermott, Congressional Representative from Washington State's 7th District (which includes Seattle) was given a tape of a telephone conference call that a Florida couple had inadvertently picked up on their police radio. The couple quickly determined that they were hearing a discussion of illegal skullduggery between elected officials and quickly taped the rest of the conversation.

The conversation was between then Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich and a couple of other congressmen. Knowing Jim McDermott to be a scrupulously honest politician (rara avis indeed!! In the last Congressional election, he was re-elected for the umpteenth time by 85% of the vote!), the couple contacted him and gave him the tape.

McDermott gave the tape (fortunately, keeping a copy) to the House Ethics Committee. The House Ethics Committee put it under "File and Forget." The ETHICS committee did nothing with it!

So McDermott, determined that American voters have a right to know how their elected officials are behaving, gave a copy of the tape to the New York Times. The New York Times published it.

Newt Gingrich and one of the other congressmen involved in the conversation, John Boehner, Republican—who, incidentally, is the current Speaker of the House—rather than being suitably ashamed of themselves, sued McDermott for "illegally leaking confidential government information"   !!!!

The suit took place in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia, and the presiding judge, Thomas Francis Hogan—appointee to the court in 1982 by President Ronald Reagan—(surprise surprise!) ruled against McDermott and ordered him to pay Gingrich and Boehner a fortune in "damages" for McDermott's "willful and knowing misconduct" that "rises to the level of malice."

McDermott challenged that ruling in a federal appeals court, arguing that since he was not the one who was actively involved in making the recording, his actions were allowed under the First Amendment, and said a ruling against him would have "a huge chilling effect" on reporters and newsmakers alike. 18 news organizations—including ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, The Associated Press, the New York Times and the Washington Post—filed a brief backing McDermott.

The ruling has been appealed to the Supreme Court, but so far, the Supreme Court has refused to hear it.

Please, give us more elected leaders like Jim McDermott and let us scrape those like Newt Gingrich and John Boehner off our shoes!!

Don Firth
