Subject: The Wilson Family @ Royal Albert Hall From: GUEST,Tim Date: 18 Aug 11 - 12:59 PM I know that the Wilsons have been mentioned in other BBC Prom related threads but having just watched this excellent concert again, I felt the need to give them their own big thank you for what was a truely outstanding performance. For me the stars of a very well put together show. If you haven't yet seen it, you can still find it on BBC4 iplayer for another 3 days. |
Subject: RE: The Wilson Family @ Royal Albert Hall From: The Sandman Date: 18 Aug 11 - 01:07 PM yes, excellent, as was june tabor, June's singing of green bushes was super, kathryn tickell and her band were magnificent too, this was a very important day for traditional music |
Subject: RE: The Wilson Family @ Royal Albert Hall From: Wheatman Date: 18 Aug 11 - 04:18 PM They were even better, live at Saltburn this week end, as were the young uns. The proms, through the good offices of Katherine, gave the genre a real boost. Shame about the clapping at the end meant you could not hear the clogs, and a single cotswold jig could have added at lot. A small niggle though. Some decent telly for a change. Gan Canny Brian |

Subject: RE: The Wilson Family @ Royal Albert Hall From: Paul G. Date: 17 Aug 11 - 10:26 PM Ha -- we have a Wilson family band over here in south Georgia, North Florida in the States... pure DNA-driven bluegrass sweetness... Likely never on BBC, but well worth a listen! |
Subject: RE: The Wilson Family @ Royal Albert Hall From: GUEST,Sue Date: 18 Aug 11 - 10:32 AM Well said Tim I totally agree with you the Wilson Family were Brilliant, but no more than I would have expected. We were lucky enough to be at the Albert Hall on the night and let me tell you the five star write-ups in the national press were absolutely correct but do not go anywhere near telling how wonderful the concert was. It was a real shot in the arm for Traditional folk music. |

Subject: RE: The Wilson Family @ Royal Albert Hall From: Liberty Boy Date: 18 Aug 11 - 12:21 PM Is anyone surprised that The Wilsons were brilliant at the Royal Albert Hall. Not me! |
Subject: RE: The Wilson Family @ Royal Albert Hall From: GUEST,Tim Date: 19 Aug 11 - 05:57 AM The BBC Proms have loaded the Wilsons singing 'Round the bay of Mexico' onto You Tube. Hopefully they'll get round to adding more from the concert! |
Subject: RE: The Wilson Family @ Royal Albert Hall From: GUEST,Liz Date: 19 Aug 11 - 10:57 AM They'll be at Whitby Festival next week, which wouldn't be the same without them. |
Subject: RE: The Wilson Family @ Royal Albert Hall From: Surreysinger Date: 19 Aug 11 - 03:41 PM At the same time that they loaded the Wilsons they also loaded an item from the Kathryn Tickell Band and the orchestra (Shepherds Hey). I doubt they will load more. |
Subject: RE: The Wilson Family @ Royal Albert Hall From: Tootler Date: 19 Aug 11 - 03:42 PM Someone else has loaded another item from the Kathryn Tickell band as well. |

Subject: RE: The Wilson Family @ Royal Albert Hall From: Bainbo Date: 20 Aug 11 - 04:04 PM Just watched it. It was supposed to be a celebration of Percy Granger. Loved everything about it apart from the Percy Granger. Full marks to the guy for collecting the material. No marks for turning it into twee tea-party diddly-diddly stuff. None of of the raw, visceral emotion of the original, none of the power of pure classical music. I had to turn the sound off during the strangulated vocals destroying Shallow Brown. Thank God for June Tabor restoring its honour. |
Subject: RE: The Wilson Family @ Royal Albert Hall From: Hamish Date: 20 Aug 11 - 04:13 PM Fine, fine.... ...then: Shallow Brown? What the...? |
Subject: RE: The Wilson Family @ Royal Albert Hall From: Edthefolkie Date: 20 Aug 11 - 04:58 PM I see the Folk Police have arrived, arresting poor old Percy for not coming up to their exacting standards. Let's hope they spell his name correctly on the charge sheet, which is more than they have on this thread! I thought the whole concert was great, wish I'd gone now. |
Subject: RE: The Wilson Family @ Royal Albert Hall From: GUEST,Bob Date: 22 Aug 11 - 06:23 AM Excellent well costructed concert and just to add how brilliant the Wilsons were. |

Subject: RE: The Wilson Family @ Royal Albert Hall From: GUEST,oracle Date: 25 Aug 11 - 12:16 PM I've been following them at Whitby FF this week and everything they've done has been performed absolutely SPLENDIDLY to universally full houses. I know they're also at Shrewsbury and Fylde but what's all this I'm hearing about the main hall at the Gateshead Sage (next March, I think) - anyone got any more details? |
Subject: RE: The Wilson Family @ Royal Albert Hall From: GUEST,Liz Date: 25 Aug 11 - 02:24 PM They were 'Fantastic' at the late night concert at Whitby on tuesday, their banter and singing had the Met ballroom rocking. |
Subject: RE: The Wilson Family @ Royal Albert Hall From: GUEST,Roger Date: 07 Dec 11 - 11:49 AM Did the BBC ever bring this out on cd? if not they should, it is a fine advert for traditional folk song. Just a thought! Watched the copy I made last evening again what a great concert. |
