Notice that all threads over 50 messages now have a "d" option in addition to the 'read 50 a time' one.

What is it, and what difference does it make?

I believe it presents the thread last post first. Handy- I scroll down to where I last read it and work my way upward.

Why Max chooses to implement such changes without telling his 'customers' is beyond me. Just his way, I suppose.

This was actually done at the suggestion of a mudcatter ..... a very sensible one, that Max has taken on board, for the benefit of those people with old or low powered machines.

It is better to inform users of changes (but maybe an update came unexpectedly with the big crash) but where Max demonstrates willingness and ability to take on board ideas to benifit certain users and implement these in a reasonable time scale, praise, not criticism should be given.

If you type anything into the "filter" box and hit "refresh", you'll see this message:

* Click on the linked "Messages" numbers to view the thread split into pages (click "d" for chronologically descending).

Why it only appears when using "filter" is a riddle that only Max can answer.

Guest, I figured it out all by myself by testing it a few times. The powers of observation are useful; the complaint you posted demonstrates one of your shortcomings, perhaps? I don't care to read threads in that order, but it doesn't merit a whiney thread. If things are a little quiet around your establishment this morning go check out Google News. There, you might find (if it's still up) that "D" stands for "Dumbledore" and it looks like Michael Gambon has been pegged to play him in the next film.

Happy New Year everyone. Oh good. I would have been disappointed (as would Max, I am sure) if we hadn't started off the new year with a bitching thread. Yeah! How dare anyone improve things around here and not warn us? Where's that rope, Spaw? New or not, I am going to go hang myself.

You can do it for any thread if you click on the blue sort descending at the top of the page.

The advantage of being able to do it on a split thread means you can read the new postings without cluttering up your computer with postings you have already read.

I took it as a valid if idle question asked at an idle moment- the sort of thing that I - and I suspect, a few others on this earth- have done once or twice in my life. A question that pops up in one's head, not of great moment but valid nonetheless.

That's because you choose to use GUEST, instead of a screen name. Hence all three postings from GUEST seemed to come from the same person. Each of the three GUEST postings are from different folks. You folks always defend your GUEST status, quit snivelling when it works against you.

And I did think your original question was valid, but would have been better posted in the HELP section.

The question is valid although clicking on the "d" would probably have answered it. The criticism of Max is the usual crap. I stand by my response.
Now lets move on to who among us is part of the inner clique and automatically comes to Max's defense at every opportunity. Might as well cover both subjects in one thread and save space.

It wasn't the original question. Nothing wrong with that. It was the smart-aleck response of "Why Max chooses to implement such changes without telling his 'customers' is beyond me. Just his way, I suppose" that set up a few backs. For someone who considers him/herself a customer without bothering to join, there is little tolerance for your complaints. Max is a resource that many of us are daily in awe of. Without his computers on his dining room table (wherever that may be these days) there would be no Mudcat. Simple as that. And it's quite a community, something he can be very proud to have nurtured by providing this forum.

Well, actually, it's my job to post an explanation in the FAQ (if things need explanation), but I was off at Camp Harmony making music and washing dishes. Nancy's right, though - there's an explanation right down at the bottom of the threads page, down next to the asterisk.

We decided long ago that we were not going to make an effort to explain every single feature we add to Mudcat - we'll explain the complicated and essential ones and answer any questions people ask, but we encourage people to explore every link and find things out for themselves. We have all sorts of treasures and surprises we haven't explained, and we've decided to let people have the pleasure of discovery.

We also decided that it may have been a mistake to hold off on all the changes for so long, and then to release them all at once. People got impatient waiting for us to fulfill our promise of the "new Mudcat." It was worth waiting for, but we could have given people many of the new features earlier. In the future, expect to see little changes like the "d" links. They may appear for a time and then disappear, depending on how effective they are. Play with them when you see them, and let us know what you think of them. Feel free to start a thread to discuss innovations you find.
