I will do Mary LOL ... so my sister calls yesterday, Mom is turning bad again .. I fly down 40+ miles. The old lady is watching her soap opera's on TV, they took her off the breathing machine. She says boy I am beginning to hate Jello like you ... They moved her to another room in ICU because it had a nice view of the lake and harbor and she was doing so well.   They told my sister that they changed the antibiotic because they saw some MRSA and wanted to nail it before it was a problem. She went from deaths door to soap operas. My sister hears MRSA and wigs .. gonna kick her arse. Mom wants her great great grand baby and her cat .. LOL   broke the mold with that old woman. Not a single complaint, nothing, just can't wait to go home. I said you are still in ICU, can ya give it a bit

My thoughts are with you and your family, dude. A tip from an old surgical nurse: when she decides it's time to get up, don't argue with her (though it may take arguing with the nurses and docs). Sitting up and walking are the best things she can do to get better. It doesn't take licensed personnel to help her, either. Family can walk with her (with a wheelchair and driver behind if you're afraid) several times a day, while the nurses will only be able to manage once or twice.

Pain can have a different quality after abdominal surgery. Tell her that severe itching/burning is the same thing as pain - if it's too much, ask for pain medicine. It's just not the same as stomach cramps or a bashed finger. If she thinks she's ok without medicine, believe her, especially if she's able to get up. She's lived a long life and learned to deal with pain. Let her be in control and less medicated, and she's less likely to get confused/combative.

And take care of yourself. I worry about your flying down the highway in a state of panic.

In 1997 I took her and my family to Ireland because she always wanted to go to Ireland. Well she wanted to kiss the Blarney Stone. I was down at the base of the castle below it when she was up there with my kids. Next thing I know, I see this hair come sailing down .. yup lost her wig ... I laughed so hard I fell over. All I heard was my kids going Grandma your hair your hair is falling ...

She laughed so hard all that trip that I couldn't stop her.. crazy old lady

Her favorite movie is "The quiet man with John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara . Well of course she had to see the quiet man bridge in the Connemara ... I turn around and she is knocking on people's doors wanting to know if John Wayne or Maureen O'Hara slept there. So a year later I went on vacation with my doc buddie and our families to the British Virgin Islands. He owns a house there, he goes wow Maureen O'Hara is home. I go What !!! yes she is a good friend lives next door. So we go over, I ask her for an autograph for my mom and the lovely lady signs a great photo for her.

When I return I gave it to my mom, she was speechless then said, I have just the frame, it will fit in this one. I said MOM!!!That is my high school senior picture. She says, yes but it is Maureen O'Hara we are talking about ...

Outside my first apartment in my home town there was a 4 way stop where the roads came together. Well one night I hear this bam bam .. hiss and hubcap rolling .. I look out and hear this familiar voice yelling at this young guy "hush up young man, us older folks have great insurance. I go to the door and my mom walks up holding this guys hub cap and says very calmly "Dan, I believe I may have failed to come to a complete stop at the sign" Can you give the young man my insurance card ... true absolutely true stories.

One thing you don't do around mom is swear, even if you are not Catholic you will end up doing the rosary. I learned my extensive swear vocabulary from my dad who was always working on some car in the yard. You would never see dad's face just his feet sticking out of a car and would hear "Come out of there you dirty bastard" as he was trying to get a broken something out of the car to replace it.

I remember asking mom "what part is a dirty bastard, dad has so much trouble with that one"   Yup he and I both ... rosary

Took her to Rome once, ever single church we had to say the rosary. Now do you know how many churches there are in Rome ... A bunch I am here to tell ya.

I said Mom there is lots to see in Rome, not just the churches. "Why would someone go to Rome to see anything else" was her reply

Forgot to tell you, last night I visited with my uncle Rocky .. yup I got an uncle Rocky .. anyway we go in the room, they moved her out of ICU and she goes hush .. quiet Lisa is sleeping. Rock and I are who is Lisa , well it is her nurse. Asleep in the chair. She wakes up and apologies .. I said no apology needed, I do that a lot when I talk to mom.   She scurries out of the room. I said "Mom you didn't make her say the rosary 10 times did you" I get no .. this is not a Catholic hospital. The poor girl has a baby and was up all night .. I decided to just let her rest. She came in to do the blood pressure and I said just sit down and nap. I got ya covered ..

I used to work housekeeping in a hospital. She doesn't have to clean the room, that's what the paid us to do. Trust me, she's paying for it and they won't give her a discount if she helps.

(For one thing, you've got to use special cleaners because of the possibility of Staph A -- cleaning surgery and labor & delivery involved wearing damned near a "clean suit" and this was back in the early '60s).

Wish me luck, they are moving her to a rehab hosp for a short time because he needs rehab and still needs IV antibiotics. That is going to go over like a fart in a spacesuit ... Gotta do a song and dance to get her convinced it is fine. She thinks it is Nursing home for old people ... LOL she is 88 , I wonder what she considers old

Tell mom that when my grand mother was 93 she had a sprained knee and was put into "long term care"... She was out in a month, back in her own apartment where she lived independently for several more years...

"Long term" ain't the enemy... it's just less expensive and means she's getting better...

Our band founder Ed would give her a run for her money, and then recruit her to lead the activities for the less-zippy inmates. Just let her know it is another area she can take over and organize-- not her room, but the staff. :~) We're off shortly to go work with our SECOND band, and entertain at a place like your mom is headed for.

A friend of mine has a photo album she calls, "Mom conquers the world." Dan, it sounds like all you need to do is add pix and you have a whole BOOK in you about this lady!

Ed and I can go entertain her ourselves if you want.

Probably one of the first things that will happen at the rehab hosp is an evaluation of where she is now and a prediction of how long it should take until she can go home. Whatever they predict, I suspect she will beat that!
