If you could ask one question and expect an answer from McCain, Clinton and Obama, what would it be?

I would ask, What do you know about the Security and Prosperity Partnership?

I would ask them if they have ever lied....

That would depend on whether I had an absolute guarantee that they would answer the question truthfully.

What have you got against Huckabee? He seems like a nicer, more down-to-earth man than most candidates.

Little Hawk, behind his affable manner Huckabee holds some really short-sighted positions. Here is just one (Can you imagine the expensive and ultimately unworkable monthly payback to the thousands, even millions, of people who would qualify? Not to mention that his projected 30% 'fair tax would not even cover the cost of our military, let alone the other taxes):

"Huckabee's plan centers around the "FairTax," under which all federal income and payroll taxes (personal federal, corporate federal, gift, estate, capital gains, alternative minimum, Social Security, Medicare, self-employment taxes) would be eliminated and replaced with a "consumption tax," known to some as a national sales tax. Plan would provide a monthly rebate or reimbursement for taxes on purchases up to the poverty line so that taxpayers aren't taxed on necessities, allowing for those living below the poverty line to avoid federal taxes altogether. Taxes would be applied only to new goods, allowing tax savings by purchasing, for example, a used car. Believes the FairTax will promote investment and discourage American companies from moving overseas and entice foreign companies to come to the U.S. and create jobs."

I would ask why the Senate has steadfastly refused to approve funding for research into a cure for the Summertime Blues.

The antidote for the Summertime Blues no doubt would be creating the illusion of a dark cave, right? The opposite of SAD? :)

I'm not exactly sure what I think about that tax plan, Ebbie, but I know this. It'll never happen. Not a chance, in my opinion.

And if it did not provide enough to finance the American military? Good. Bring the legions home, and leave the rest of the world alone for a change. ;-)

Get the insurance companies to answer a few questions for Congress and jus' maybe y'all could HAVE a medicare program that works.

You got that right, Bruce! Kick the insurance companies out of health care.

Susan Jacoby on Bill Moyers last week spoke about this.

For the first time since I can remember there are Democratic campaign ads running in Texas. I've seen one each for Obama and Hillary. Who knew that a Democrat in Texas would have any clout? (Early voting starts today)

Little Hawk, you may have missed the point. Huckabee assumes that his FairTax plan would replace all the taxes that we are paying today. His sales tax would apply to everything from food and medicine to cars and houses; he thinks that a 30% tax across the board would pay for everything. But economists say the military alone would take 34% of it, leaving a minus for all the others.

I just don't know enough about the tax situation in the USA to really offer an opinion, Ebbie. I'm not worried about Huckabee's tax plan, because I am quite sure it will never happen.

I'm not worried about his belief in Creationism either. I don't care, frankly. I don't think the country will roll over and die because some people or some politicians happen to believe in Creationism. Everyone is going to go on believing exactly what they want to believe about that, and plenty of them want to believe in evolution too...probably a large majority of them, because it IS the conventional view in the world today in most places. So what? Like Chongo says, what matters is what we do about our lives NOW, not what we think about where our remote ancestors came from or exactly how.

If he's opposed to the right of "choice", well, I would disagree with him there.

Little Hawk ... I've got nothing against Huckabee, and I like his idea about getting rid of the IRS (as I have mentioned, more than once here on the Cat). The problem with Huckabee is that many people fear the idea of having an ordained minister as a president ... what's there to fear, there have been generals, lawyers, actors, clowns, oilmen and even a haberdasher as president .... so why not try out a Christian minister. What's there to lose i ask ??

Now back to taxes ... getting rid of income tax is just too revolutionary a thought to a lot of folks, so that certainly isn't going to work ... plus it's one hell of a cash cow for the Feds ... as Ebbie says "But economists say the military alone would take 34% of it, leaving a minus for all the others." ... christ, with the military raping that percentage of the taxes it's wonder the Feds arent' taking more out of your paycheck. The rest of the tax percentage is just squandered on other junk, not much left over for social causes. Hey, there's a good question to these candidates ... "would you think of significantly cutting back on military spending ??'

That's my 2 cents worth ... not much more to spend ... payday on Friday and what little change I have left over after taxes I can rant some more here regarding income tax.

Yeah... ;-) The idea of having an ordained minister for a president doesn't scare me a bit after what I've seen in the Oval Office.

But, hey, that's IT! You have asked the perfect question.

That's my question for the candidates:

"Would you consider cutting back significantly on military spending and putting that money instead into social programs?"

(I bet not one of them would dare do it.)

I bet they wouldn't LH .... not even one of the 4 candidates would, probably a good spin from 2 of them .... scarry isn't it ... status quo as usual.

I'd ask: "What do you see as the long-term problems confronting the US and the World, and how do you propose to begin dealing with them in such a way that we have some hope of solving them instead of just applying band-aids?"

My question for the candidates: "Seeing as how you can't find honest employment, why do you think you would be best suited to represent the people of this country?"
