In case you didn't know, there is a great free music festival held in the above town every July.

The Town square is closed off and several sound stages put up. There is drinking in the streets and a very friendly police presence well accustomed to turning a 'blind eye'.

Try not to miss it. It attracts muso's from all over the world.

Oh I know about it but never made it when living in North (not mid) Wales and am now living in Norfolk...

Those I know that have been there have never been dissapointed.

There is a "What's" on here but I'm not sure how it works - I think you just post to the thread. Try to get it entered there.

I was in Dolgellau (I even know how to pronounce it!)in April 1978 to climb Cader Idris; stayed in the youth hostel, had a lovely short visit. It would be great to be there with my daughter!

Please excuse me, I just wanted to point out that we'd had some good times at this festival and make others aware of its existence. I got the spelling off the official web-site. If you've got a problem take it up with them.

May I suggest time spent looking for spelling errors and misprunts would be better invested in taking some kind of self awareness course. Also, please let me know where you got your Welsh language spell-checker.

Dai may be Welsh. (sic). I would hate for you to be exposed as being politically incorrect and having too much time on your hands.

we are being nice, by keeping Dolgellau on the page, it nearly died, like my welsh, being illiterate in my native tongue. Sessiwn is only the welsh spelling of session with a North Walian accent.Notice 2 ses in the middle,Nos da.

I've got a mate who lives in Arthog, and he told me that most of the english people that moved there named their houses something similar without realising it meant 'toilet'.

You say that Welsh is unpronouncable in any language in the same sentence as mentioning Irish? Hmmmm.. Have you ever tried? It's completely phonetic, with harder and faster rules than English.

Breezy, is Pryn dydd mewn July adyr sessiwn? supposed to mean something? 'Cause it don't...

And just to waver back on topic, it's nice to note that Sesiwn Fawr (one 's' only) won a major award in 2000 - Welsh event of the Year. Community-led folk event competing against some pretty heavy 'professional' large-scale stuff. I guess the good guys do win sometimes.

Breezy, "What day is it?" would be Pa ddiwrnod yw hi? (as in what day is it today). Did you want to know what the dates of the Festival this year would be? If so, Beth yw dyddiadau'r Wyl eleni? (And they seem to be the third weekend in July usually.) I laughed at your, 'y soldiwr'! Haven't heard that mild slap-in-the-face for a while! Gymanfa (as in Gymanfa Ganu) is, these days, kept for hymn festivals although the word really means a gathering together (convocation?) of people for a specific purpose.

Liz - no snow in West Wales as far as I know. Too dull to see the Black Mountains or the Preselau from here today, but it's been awfully mild...

And just two words of caution - it won't be a free festival this year (although the proposed charges are damn reasonable) and they're moving it off the main square, although I understand the new site isn't far off.

Mr Red - nope, not a VIP of any sort ... although I can sometimes wangle passes to Pontardawe Folk Fest.!
