Operation Cyclone was the code name for the CIA’s covert program to finance, arm, and train the Afghan mujahideen against the Soviet Union during the Soviet-Afghan War. Lasting from 1979 to 1992, it grew into one of the longest and most expensive covert operations in U.S. history.
