I had the sad, sad duty of watching Rod Stewart tonight, recreating Maggie May and failing miserably...in fact, it was painful. I wondered, is there something about old rock stars that allows them selective deafness so they can't hear how awful they are now or is it a case of choosing to believe they are still great?

He bluffed his way through by shouting the lyric and leaning heavily on Ronnie Wood who was playing lead guitar and I was actually blushing for shame at how horrible it was.I only kept watching for that cute mandolin bit at the beginning and end.

I know Rick Fielding has asked a similar question but why do we think they do that? Have they gone deaf? Do they think it still sounds good? What is going on here?

As Rod said during the interview when talking about his recent throat op', it's all he can do. The fact that he can no longer do it very well won't bother him as long as people still pay to hear him.

And in case anyone thinks Morty is exaggerating the awfulness, I muted the sound while he was singing and turned it back on for the interview.
